This Video Blows! ..... Literally! - Fan Restoration

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to my Vintage Table Fan Restoration. I hope you all enjoy it and learn a few tips and tricks along the way.
So as always my first job is to give the fan a good visual inspection to make sure that i can be saved and apart from a little rust and grime this old fan appears to be in good shape but i will know more when i open up the casings.
The first item to remove is the fan and guard these are freed by removing 3 screws. They are then easily lifted off. i can then remove the face plate and see the motor.
Before i can remove the motor from the housing i need to disconnect the old nasty wiring and pull out a piece of spring steel that secures the motor. Once these parts are disconnected and removed i can simply slide the motor out and disassemble the rest of the unit. After disassembly i applied paint stripper onto the housing and stand and while that was working i went over the the sand blaster and blasted the fan and guard back to bare steel ready for primer.
Once finished blasting i returned to remove the paint stripper and saw that the metal was covered in surface rust this was easily cured with a little bath in DEOX C . while the rust eater was doing its work the motor was stripped and placed in the ultrasonic cleaning tank to remove decades of grease and grime. I then took the now spotless clean parts to the sink and rinsed them off before leaving them to fully dry out on the heater.
While the motor parts were drying off i made a start on the paint work side of things. I first etched all the parts then gave them 3 coats of high build primer to even out the surface. While that was curing i set about the next job of zinc plating the now rust free bolts. This was done but dipping the parts in several acid baths, electro plating the parts then sealing them with a passivate, blue was used in the project.
When the primer had cured i removed the parts from the spray booth and wet flatted them to remove any imperfections and make them ready for the top coats of paint. I could have gone with the original colours but i fancied jazzing it up a little so lime green and grey white was chosen and im delighted with the result.
Once everything had a chance to cure properly then i could reassemble the unit and test it out, but not before replicating the original sticker with some printable vinyl. And with that applied the project was done.
I hope you will all join me again soon and I also hope you enjoyed the video
Stay Tuned and i will see you all again soon.

If you connect cables, please use cable shoes or at least some washers. Otherwise, especially on a ventilator, the nuts can rattle loose or the wire can break on the screw terminal.

That sure is a wild color. I think I would have went with something a little more period like a chocolate brown with a polished/chromed blade and guard. But the green would look cool on a shabby schiek looking end table. I'm surprised that you didn't reapply some kind of lacquer or sealer to the field windings. Great resto as always.

Hope you put some oil on those felt pads, otherwise those bushes are going to be very dry, especially after being scrubbed in the ultrasonic like that. They need 5 drop or so of 10W 30 engine oil added to each pad, which will then soak into the oilite bush and lubricate for a long time. Yes please get some crimp on ferrules, especially for cables like that, they will come loose otherwise. The common crimp on ones can also be soldered if you remove the red, blue or yellow sleeve, and then use some heatshrink tube after soldering, to make them both more robust and able to fit small places easier. Cheap eBay pack (throw the flimsy horrible crimp tool that comes with the kit away, all you need are the crimps, and some decent crimp pliers) and you will get at least 20 of the most common size hole lugs, in all 3 common cable sizes. Then you see which ones run low first, and buy packs of 100 of them.

I agree with SeanBZA...over time, from fan vibration, the wire strands will work loose and short....it is considered a fire and safety hazard. I strongly encourage you to add crimp-on loop connectors and heatshrink to the wires NOW... That way, you can continue making your GREAT videos into the future. ☮️

I know exactly what you mean. Id much prefer instead of giving me a thumbs down they would explain to my why they didn't like the video so i could hopefully make the videos better in the future, but oh well onwards and upwards. Thanks for leaving a comment :)

Loved it. Maybe a little work on that wingnut? Stands out a bit. Not quite as perfect as the rest of the job. I'm sure you took care of all the usual lube issues.

Nice restoration!!! For me the lime green is not the colour, but this is a personnal opinion, i'm more on the red/ orange shades. The only thing i will ask you is to use round cable terminators and not just twisting the cable and tie it down with the screw, is not the proper british way (lol), i understand that due to COVIT restrictions you maybe didn't get a supply of those, you will do it for sure later :) Keep up the great job, love every video of yours!!!!

Thank you for leaving a comment. You're correct ins saying ring terminals would be better but i didn't have any and with postage delays due to covid i didnt want to keep you all waiting another week for a fan restoration so twist connections were good enough to get it powered up for the moment. Glad you enjoyed the project and hope to see you on the next one.

great as usual. Why not do a late 90's scooter/moped/50cc motorcycle.. as with all things one day they will be classics. some can be picked up cheap enough to by 2 or 3 and make 1 good one.
