That canon shot at 13:13 had to be perfect timing by the game and it was hilarious.

Dave actually is a good Mario Maker player, better than many think, but he makes consistent mistakes in judgment which make people think “I could do better than that!” The first content I watched from him was 1-1 world and I thought he had never played Mario before. Only later did I find out that Mario is his game….

A lot of it comes from the fact that he tends to rush which makes him either commit careless mistakes or overlook simple solutions. It also doesn’t help that he’s trying to engage with the chat, which can be distracting.

@@thatboybear Yes. I personally always wonder how the hell the really elite players (like GrandPooBear) openly talk with chat while speed running at an elite level. I always figured Dave engaging with chat is a major part of his screw-ups. I personally don't think I could do both at the same time, without either playing like crap, or leaving dead-air/mumbling nonsense in chat. I honestly feel like there's huge skill involved in being able to play video games competently while reading/talking at the same time. I bet Dave would be so much better if there was no chat.

8:50 "...like I'm some 'savant' Mario Maker player... I'm so average..." That's why I watch DGR. His gameplay reminds me of mine. He doesn't do insane kaizo tricks, he struggles on parts I'd struggle on, it's a refreshing type of Mario stream to watch that differs from all the speedrunners. (Although Dave is definitely a better player than me, I should add. His skills are just more down-to-earth and relatable.)

Yeah Dave is still a little better than me, but mostly because I’ve never been bothered to learn shell jumping and kaizo tricks

I was thinking the same thing. You just have to look at the position of the block when you trigger the bomb and it will be consistent every time. But instead of using 1-2 bombs to gauge the timing, DGR tried it randomly a hundred times and called the level bad. Not that it would be anything new to see DGR struggle with timing related puzzles 😂

yea, the first thing I noticed was that the block completes about 7/8th of a period between the bomb being ignited and when it blows up, meaning the proper timing is igniting it when the block is between the midpoint and one of the endpoints of the arc. pretty surprising because my understanding is that he's done some speedrunning before, and speedrunners generally would try to look for setups based on things like visual cues and rhythm to make things consistent.

It still matters when he throws it so he isn’t blown up.. and when he decides to ignite it will change the timing of when he throws it so he needed to keep both in mind. There’s not one single moment to ignite and one to throw. There’s many many, and he was trying to find one of the pairs

As far as the retroactive intros, I definitely see both sides of it. It can spoil whether he got the clear, but it keeps people from sniping them. I get what he was saying about not getting why people do it. It's a jerk move just for some cheap satisfaction.

That third level has a very interesting mechanic. It just needs some tweaks. That last vine bomb thing needs some way to reset it if you mess up, at minimum. Maybe add a door just beside it that leads to a dead end. And maybe add better cues on how to get it right, or even, gasp, make it a bit less narrow.

Okay, so that first one is just a bad troll level. One where the designer doesn't get how troll levels work, and thus people didn't enjoy trying to finish it. You're supposed to trick people in troll levels, but it's always supposed to be clear what you're supposed to do. This one was more "find the ending."

Because the servers are going to be shut down soon. (All the Wii U servers, that is). They shut off the ability to upload levels a while back but you can still play existing levels. You won't even be able to do that now. So a bunch of people are trying to clear all the levels while they still can. As for when... that will happen in April 2024.

Dave claims to be humble but then mocks his fans. Real classy there Dave. If you don't like people taking your first clears then just get better or just don't do intros and do outros instead. If the goal to leave zero levels uncleared then why does it matter who gets the first clear?

Because some fans have gotten upset about it in the past and Dave clarifies his opinion about it later in the video. Also what we see after that first level are outros from him, he's streaming the content and when the goal is to get the first clear as per the title it can become understandably frustrating when tryhards want to troll him so this is the best solution. Also "mocking his fans"? You mean the small group of people who do this instead of just enjoying the content? Yes, everyone else who chooses not to do this is devastated, especially when part of the content is Dave usually making fun of chat and chat giving it right back, but sure that one sarcastic remark was absolutely devastating to his entire fanbase.

Why can't you just show the level ID's AFTER you complete them? I don't want to take any levels nor any records away from you if you are that uptight about things, I just wanna show off some levels for my kids so we can get better ideas.
