And those men grew up learning to play music in their backyards on their porches like people their generation and generations before them did. They learned from their elders and just trying for the pure pleasure of it. Back in the day, almost everyone played a musical instrument of some kind, often more than one, and the naturally gifted shined among everyone else, and with the advent of radio and then TV could become famous musicians just because they were so naturally talented as songwriters, singers, and/or musicians.

About forty years ago I got to see Jerry Lee perform (at the Blue Max) in Chicago at a time when his career was tanking. I think the tickets were less than 20 bucks, and my seats were just left-center of the keyboard no more than 15 feet from him -- on the same level! The place wasn't even sold out, but Jerry blew the roof off the place, talked to us, joked with us, and took every request. None of us who were there will ever forget it -- and I bet Jerry Lee never will either ...for different reasons. When you're on top and perform like the maestro you are, no problem. But when you're in free-fall (as Jerry was at that time) and perform like you're still considered the best ever, ...well, that's what you call a REAL class act!

You guys have to remember Roy Orbison was only 52 when he died....Theoretically he had barely peaked vocally. He had at least another strong 15 years left in his career had he lived... Just like Elvis he was vocally in his prime when he died and was doing things with his voice even in his worst days that he couldn't do when he was younger... Listen to Elvis sing Unchained Melody in 1977, it's incredible and he was a sick man...imagine.

He played 3-4 songs or so and set the joint on fire. People were just going crazy. I got to see Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs and BJ Thomas there at different times as well. All of them were great but Jerry Lee REALLY gave it all he had, heart & soul. He was amazing. I will never forget it. i saw him many years later at a casino in Bay St Louis and even though his career was on its downhill side, he was still giving it his all. Phenomenal entertainer. @Dee Dee, we each have our preferences - I personally love Johnny Cash’s voice above all the others but all four are very talented - their voices are very different and should not be compared. The music they each sang was well-suited to their individual voices and they could harmonize well when they got together and sang like they did here. Some of them had more far-reaching impact on music in the USA and across the world than others but they were each very talented musical artists so there is no need to disparage one against the other. We are lucky to have all their music to listen to and enjoy today.

@@gregnormal55. hello Greg. My daddy was raised in the Northeast on Italian opera and Frank Sinatra. But he joined the Air Force right out of high school in 1950 and was stationed in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he first heard Country and Western. He bought himself a guitar and a Hank Williams’ (senior) songbook and music was never the same for him again. I on the other hand was raised on The Beatles and Motown. It took a long time for both of us to learn to appreciate the other’s music, but eventually we both did. I’m a huge Roy Orbison fan now and daddy is in heaven strumming a guitar and singing with the angels. Keep the faith and blessings to you.
