I used one of these racks for years but ours used an impact wrench to tighten the clamps. Usually you want about an inch of over hang over the side and never use a breaker bar to crank down on them. Just like any other clamp, just enough for squeeze out. I say that from experience. When our air went out one day I used a bar to tighten them down. After a panel exploded out of the clamps into my face I woke up on the floor with a broken nose and two black eyes. It was fun explaining what happened to my boss.

I don't know about these but on frame machines used for pulling wrecked cars a lot of them say never use an impact gun. Hand tighten only. But who listens. That's why bolts replaced every 3 months

A breaker bar would apply a twist force to the linear clamp and cause the substrate break free and break noses. You're lucky that's all that happened. Just hand tighten until it stops. Once it stops, now you're engaging the frame and that's bad news.

I'm not a handy guy.. fight my way through every project, but started watching your videos about a month ago, and you explain everything so well that it even gives me confidence to try stuff! As such, in the last month I've gone from owning a dollarstore hammer and pair of pliers, to a full on wood working shop (god bless my wife!!) and I've started (and finished) a bunch of projects! I use these racks since my childhood. From my experience you would want to put some kind of plain scrap wood across and clamp it. These racks can and will press pieces in the middle boards out. Maybe not far out but especially with wide boards it can be dangerous or the results are bad. We also draw a triangle with a gravite pencil over every boards when we lay them out. So we dont get confused when we stack them on the rack.

Am I the only one that notices the grown/groan 3 seconds in? That must be the “My, how the shop has grown” groan. Lmao. Congrats on the new rack! ❤️🔥

We have a couple of them where I work. They're a lifesaver when doing a bunch of glue-ups. Word of advice. Get a long bar and a block of wood. then you can use leverage by putting the bar through the row above on the rack and really lean on it. It really helps flatten trouble spots out in the field of the table.

If you plan on doing surface work ie countertops and tables I’d recommend getting a straight line rip saw. That will allow you to get into clamps from rough material super fast, as you will be able to bypass the jointer. We go from rough>>>planed>>>straight line>>>clamps>>>CNC for surface and cut to size. Get a 5 gallon bucket for Titebond and a large and small paint roller and you’ll be money!

Definitely need an impact to tighten them there clamps! Idk if our jig for our impact was custom made or bought, but it works well. We swap out our Kobalt impact whenever we blow one up. Lowes doesn’t seem to care how abused they are. Swivel adapter for air hose or I suppose a whip would work too

LOL too the little pop up. I’m 58 and omg. I was born and raised on our family farm up here in Canada and if I had a $ for every time I got yelled at for not holding the flashlight in the exact spot , I would honestly be a very rich man, and god forbid if I would slip or just move my hand and it would shine in his eyes for a second . Oh would I get yelled at and called all kinds of degrading names, and I was only 6 or 7 years old. I was forced to learn how to drive the big grain truck at age 9 and the tractor at 8 years old. But I honestly do know I was NOT THE ONLY ONE GETTING SHIT FOR NOT HOLDING A FLASHLIGHT PERFECTLY FOR THE OLD MAN. It was just the way things were back in the 70’s. Anyway John , I love your Chanel’s and I love this clamp rack. Also want to give a big shout out to Sam. I remember when he first started with you and he was VERY GREEN as I say, but look at you now man, John actually talks to you with respect ( well sometimes). I am very impressed with how far you have come with your skills.

I was in my great grandfathers wood shop for a few months making cutting boards. the list of things I had to buy follow, blades, glue, glue applicator set. The roller bottle head saved me so much time in the end grain pieces I made. (living up here in the Beaver County, I just love seeing a Pittsburgh youtuber living the Yinz life!)

Nice upgrade, the order I usually do my glue ups on those racks is righting up the middle then hammer so it flat then do up the out sides and hammer it then do the rest up

At the stair company I work for we have 3 clamp rack systems. Although 2 are pneumatic and the other is hydraulic. each rack has a glue conveyor. These things save so much time it's great.

I worked at a place that made home doors, we had a rotating clamping rack that we could do like 50 doors a day. It made glue up so much faster and easier.

I've actually build one of these a couple of years ago! It's not a pro like yours because it's homemade. But it has glued up alot of table tops.. saves space and time

@@ryanmccue8180 yup, no worries. I keep a block of candle wax next to my glue-up station. Before I put the clamps on, I give them a quick swipe. You should also keep a block near your planer/jointer...an occasional swipe on the infeed table helps boards go in smooth.

Phew, I hadn't seen the long beard dude for a while and thought he left. Rock on, buddy!

Cut a slot in the side of that pipe handle and it will slide on better and prevent breaking the clamp handles. Don't over tighten the clamps but do use the handle. I used to do all the doors and drawers in a custom cabinet shop and got repetitive stress injuries in my wrists and thumbs from cranking down and breaking loose clamps. It was common to do a batch of 60+ doors and fronts at a time has 30 pairs of clamps glue dry was 45 min. So I'd go till I ran out of clamps then start pulling a door out to recycle the clamps to the next door.

Try using a 3/8 nap by 4 inch paint roller. Dump the glue in a paint pan. Three times faster than a squeeze bottle and zero glue waste.

I love that thing... I just wish I had your talent so I could make something that required it.

I used one of those clamping frames in 2000, to make cabinet doors.

I glued door panels on a Taylor for 8 years. Try setting up your parts on the clamps before gluing, less chance of dropping them on the way over. Put some cardboard or something underneath the rack to catch any drips, it sucks to clean up dried glue and you can just throw the cardboard away. when I would make cutting boards I would open the bottle and pour a bunch and spread it with a credit card or piece of melamine, much faster for me.

For glueing solid wood cabinets for a unnamed manufacturer. We just use a 6 inch paint roller. A 3 person crew can get an average of 1400 doors glued in 8 hours.

Love the vids here in the uk. But couldn't you put multiple small glue-ups by adding a non-glued piece of wood between them? You could fit 3 plus small glue-ups per clamp.

Sad to see the office bunk going to waste. The floor of the top deck (box section + mesh) would make a tidy sign. Backlit with LEDs. 3D printed or CNCd letters mounted on the mesh. Just an idea if you decide to keep it

No offense but it seems great for layout and axial clamping but what are you doing to keep the glued up panel flat? They could have added a swing arm that folds down on top of the glued surface. I have never glued a panel that did not have some kind of bow in it that required me to clamp flat with cross members.

That clamp rack is such a cool idea, why am I just now finding out about this

@john malecki Love your videos. Have you looked into radio frequency wood welding/glue curing? It uses RF to heat and bond wood glue in seconds for edge gluing applications. Pneumatics provide edge and top pressure while it cures. I used to build them for a company I worked for years ago. They have flatbed machines that can do material 100 inches long. DM me if you want their contact info. They sell machines to cabinet makers, casket makers etc, truck flooring companies etc.

I saw a dude from Alaska who makes cutting boards (cant remember his name tho) and he has one of them clamping things. His rusted a bit, so it could be a good idea to treat them so yours dont rust!

I get the clamps are for Big big table and wood But I feel for small stuff like in this video, it would be super cool if the clamps had possibilty to clamp multi projects at one time on one clamp so have 2 -3 projects per clamp. There is so much room left behind and well being able to maxamize space and effectiveness on use of that with small stuff would be sweet and I have already a couple simple ideas on how that could be done with there already set clamps. I wont go into it here becuase it would be long and I need a closer look but there is a way I bet online also! I cannot be only on thinking this about it!

Looks like you might actually want that press to keep the glue up flat.

Use it for year's air clamp is available to flatten in between clamps and a regular 4 Inch shit roller works great

Where did you get the rack, what company

If you're planning to make a large amount of chopping boards, couldn't you clamp up 2-3 per clamp to increase production? Of course, butting two outer (unglued) edges together. I imagine you'd need something to keep them from raising over a longer distance though.

I think it really needs a down force clamp system to keep boards flat or you need to oversize your boards and thickness sand them flat.

Love the content, always. Question When assembling the clamps could you flip the supports so you can use the clamps overtop to keep it from Boeing? Just a thought.

If could clamp several of the smaller boards in just two clamps by stacking them. Obviously leave the joint between the outside pieces of each board dry (no glue).

Looks like an awesome tool! I haven't done a ton of woodworking so I'm a bit confused, how come you wouldn't use some kind of domino/biscuit in between the board on the big tabletop? Wouldn't that make it stronger and help prevent a single board from warping?

Glue is stronger than wood. If you break that table top after the glue is cured, it will have broken the wood and not the glue joint. If indeed a biscuit is stronger than the glue, it's overkill and takes more time.

Funny as usual. You would get a better straight clamping by having vertical clamps over top as well to prevent bowing up.
