3 LEVELS of Cutting Boards - Beginner to PRO Build

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We're back with another 3 LEVELS Build, this time it's Cutting Boards - Beginner to PRO.
Thanks to Bespoke Post for sponsoring this video. Get 20% off your first monthly box when you sign up at bspk.me/john and use promo code JOHN20 at checkout!
We dive into 3 different styles on this project. Jordan keeps it basic with a long grain board with a beveled edge, Sam builds a beautiful walnut end grain board that includes a juice groove. I build this whack 3D style board that takes more time than is probably necessary.

So what happens when you flip it to use the back side? Cutting boards have 2 sides! Personally I just want performance from my board, and all of these land on low performance. A cutting board has 1 job. To protect your knife. Here is a list of things cutting boards shouldn't be made from. Stone, glass, metal, hardwoods, or bamboo (technically a grass!) Here is a list of professionally accepted materials. Rubber, some soft plastics, and some softwood (hinoki, larch, spruce, yellow pine, etc) The goal when selecting a wood for a cutting board is a soft wood that isn't too soft and strong antimicrobial properties.

To have in my kitchen to actually use and see on a regular basis? The "beginner" one. Very simple but beautiful use of the colors and contrast. The other two would be nice novelty pieces to pull out when there's company for something overly fancy (which, honestly, we never do), but that would be it. They're all gorgeous, though. Sam your board was too dark in the end but the design is neat and clever. Jordan you chamfered at 27 degrees; Sam would approve of that, love the simplicity of yours. Mamma would be chopping parsley about 9 days earlier than waiting for the other two to finish their fancy layouts. John yours is immense in all ways and perfect for the Zen cook that has to contemplate the very nature of infinity as they chop. C'mon make part 2 of this where you inlay them all into each other and spiral off the edge of the universe....

I'll agree it's a commonly seen board type of superior construction. But I really think people need to move away from hardwoods for cutting boards. Hinoki, spruce, larch, or yellow pine are about all I will accept anymore. A wood needs to earn its place in my home by passing my bar exam! And it better test out between 500-900 on the janka scale while having strong antimicrobial properties. A cutting board isn't something you cook up in a ez bake oven with shop scraps. These are more like fancy serving boards. To which I'll take the mitered one because it's easy to carry, weighs less, and reminds me of surfing which also fits a beach theme which suits me.

Jordan's is good for a serving board. Hardwood makes for inferior cutting boards that hurt knife edges. I'd rather buy a yoshihiro hinoki board 1.25" thick version, or the larchwood endgrain boards. Much better on the knives and both have strong antimicrobial properties. That being said the best cutting board in existence might be the Parker Asahi boards. A proprietary mix of rubber and sawdust! Fully self healing, sandable, they even have antimicrobial ones, and all are gentle on the knife. Another goo brand, but mostly for slicing is the Hasegawa cutting boards. They are a plastic cutting board with pure rubber surface and wooden core for lightness. But the kind of grab the blade, so are best for slicing. If your ever in a sushi joint and look across to the cutting boards. It's pretty much always a Hasegawa, Asahi, or Hinoki wood cutting board you will see.

Worse tools? No, but how about less tools. A beginner wouldn’t have a planner or a jointer. I’ll give them a pass on the table saw, and the miter saw, but even still. A beginner might have either a table or miter.

@@theerickstone If you don't have a planer or a jointer, or handplanes and a bench, then cutting boards are probably not something you should be doing if you want it done right, IMO.

I think all three are cool. The first one is really cool in it's simple design with the red, and the second and third are bad ass too. Wonderful!!!

Your guys are the only ones I have ever seen pushing material through a jointer without holding on to the material past the cutter. As a person that has been cut, that scared the crap out of me. Stay safe and keep making awesome vids! 😁
