Something that I haven't seen most people mention is that the damage to poor Maria's relationship with her peers has already been done. She was ridiculed in front of her entire class for her situation, making her out to be lazy and insensitive to the other kids. What are the chances she won't be bullied in the schoolyear going forward, let alone actually manage to make any friends with her peers in a period of her life where meaningful social connections are vital to not continuously dwell on her situation? There's a huge difference when it comes to making an apology and taking accountability, and this teacher took none. She was a perfect model to impressionable young minds of exactly what kind of bullying is tolerated and to whom. This happens to innocent kids in the real world everyday.

Exactly and it wasn't even the child's fault. The mom should've done more. I think that she could've gotten unemployment or she should've been looking for another job. Also the teacher didn't need to act like that. She should've taken the child aside and spoke to her in private. She didn't need to humiliate her in front of her classmates.

That teachers’ eyes are pretty, but not her attitude towards kids. It is NEVER a child’s fault for what they wear or bring to a class party or anything. And Maria even tried her best, like writing a letter to a classmate. You don’t need to spend $20 on someone or something to show that you care. It doesn’t matter if you’re poor or rich: BE KIND.

@ Grace Couch Exactly. I tend to emphasize with teacher b/c they go through so much is difficult kids and many get very little support. But there’s no excuse for humiliating a student based on looks and being unable to afford nice things like the others. Especially towards a sweet kid like Maria who did nothing wrong.

This video made me cry, when I was in the 6th grade my parents and I were homeless and I only had old and baggy clothes, when my teacher found out her and a few other teachers pitched in money and bought me a bunch of new clothes and sneakers.. she even signed me up to get a free bike for Christmas, a food bag program the school was starting and offered my parents any help she could provide. . . So to my 6th grade teacher Mrs. Joiner thank you for everything you really were an angel in my time of need❤❤

I really like this video because it shows how people judge others for no reason, some teachers think kids that are poor just choose to be. They could ask or some could just tell by clothes or other things. I’m glad that this teacher and others out there figured out her situation and made her feel better at the end. This also brings awareness to teachers like this.

Ok stop. I feel so so bad for anyone going through that, and this actually made me sorta cry- i literally dont know why but my eyes are filled with tears 😂

The fact that her first thought when she opened her gifts was to give them to someone else! This little girl deserves the world! To so quickly think of someone else when her and her mother were the ones struggling. Such a little sweetheart!

Moral of the story: Never humilate anyone even if they're poor. Each teacher should help the students no matter about what they're going through.

The part where Maria had her gift taken away hits personally for me. Back in 2008 we were doing a secret Santa thing and this boy named Ronnie didn’t get the gift he was supposed to for Alannah. Our teacher straight up took the gift meant for him and gave it to her. To this day I think that was just wrong. Like that was a gift bought for Ronnie specifically and he just decided to give a gift that somebody else bought to Alannah.

I feel like crying watching the small girl crying ? Always try to be happy.

I have a story request that kind of relates to my life: "Sister is always rude to younger brother then instantly regrets it" You see, it was just me and my brother. All i wanted was a little sister. Then my mom became pregnant, and I continued to brush off my brother constantly. Only 4 months pregnant, my mom had a miscarriage. It was the saddest day of my life, but it taught me that I need to be thankful for the sibling that I do have.

By the way $20 for a gift is very expensive for school-aged kids. The limit should be $5. Because that means the gift does not have to be $5 it could be a dollar gift it can be fifty cents can be anything up to $5 and the teacher said 'you were supposed to spend $20!!'' So many things wrong with this video!!

This video makes me so greatful, the fact the maria dosent even care about herself,when she gets her gifts,she just talks about giving them to her class,it's very heart warming.

The child is really a good actor. I cried seeing her in embarrassement after the teacher took her gift.
