This Storm Punched A Hole In the Stratosphere...

Join me on my adventure documenting severe thunderstorms, including a massive Missouri Supercell on June 30, 2023! The supercell produced 3.5 inch hail, with a nearby MCS producing winds near 91 mph.

I didn't even know one COULD chase regular storms. I thought the radar caught enough. I've always thought clouds, especially massive ones like the ones in this video, are just absolutely magnificent. Some of the most beautiful things we can see, especially here on Earth. They give such a sense of scale and majesty, humbling you but making you feel at ease at the sheer smallness of humanity.

Mikey, I hope you don't mind a comment here from a 67-year-old Bengals fan in Kentucky. Back in the day, I used to observe storms on my bike, too. In fact, I became a volunteer storm spotter, and I saw and reported on a monster F4 tornado that killed seven people near my hometown on April 3, 1974, during the Super Outbreak. Mikey, your heart and your head are in the right place! Keep on doing what you are doing, and as you get older and gather more resources and contacts, I think that you will have opportunities to contribute knowledge and insight into these storms, which may well foster more understanding about them and result in saving lives and property in the future. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much! That’s awesome! Sorry the tornado that hit your town. A few years back, we had a mile wide Ef4 bearing down on our town, but it lifted just before our house. But it went right over my dad and destroyed houses that he used to deliver to at the time. It’s crazy to think I was that close to losing him. Thankfully nobody died in the tornado, otherwise I’d probably have lots of survivors guilt. I already think that anyway sometimes. I always wish I was out spotting for that one lol, however, I do question how well I would’ve performed, as it was the worst and most high stakes half hour of my life. I had already been into Weather for years, but didn’t start going out till that Saturday, (June 1, 2019)

Fun fact: these clouds can seem closer than they are in real life. Without radar it is really easy to misjudge how far or how close a storm is. I have observed towering cumulonimbus from my home in Michigan that radar said were in Indiana, 30 miles away, but appeared to be almost close enough to touch. I have tracked one magnificent supercell for at least 70 miles in my rearview and never lost sight of it. It was already far to the north when I spotted it, and I was headed southwest. Then there was the tornado that hit Dexter, MI in 2012. I remember sitting outside at a winery near Mattawan watching a wall of thunderheads to the east and thinking something big is going on there. It wasn't until I got home and turned on the news that I realized that I had been watching the backside of that storm system which was a hundred miles away.

Everyone is all about catching the tornados, cool and all but I find this more appealing, seeing the storms from a vantage point such as this. I've literally been right under a ground lightning thunderhead. I must say, I've never thought the world could possibly rip off the walls of your house with just sound until that event. Was deafening inside. Was like sun on earth outside so bright.

This particular storm did not hit independence, if you’re referring to independence Missouri. Are you perhaps referring to July 17, 2023? There was a big hail storm that day that started on the south east part of the Kansas City metro and moved south.

I remember flying from Denver to Tampa during the early summer of 2012. I was watching the Stanley Cup playoffs on the seatback TV. I switched to the Weather Channel because out my window was a massive storm with the tops above our cruising altitude. It was kinda surreal to look at a massive, violent storm on the news while watching it from an airplane window.

I was watching that storm pretty damn close Myself! Grew up watching them from the countryside of Leavenworth County. I witnessed tornadoes 3 times under 18, two times I watched them approach from my back deck. One was rainwrapped and only visible when lightening hit, off to the northwest. The other was across the road in the corn field making it's way towards county road 2, which that storm took out many of my friends' (and non friends') homes! I was in high-school, I believe that was in 1999 or 2000. They tried to say it was a microburst, but I saw that thing with my own eyes! The 3rd one I saw we were in our basement and I heard it coming, the train sound, and for some reason I walked towards the glass backdoor instead of the back wall, I wanted to see it. I looked out and saw our pond at the very end of our acre and a half being sucked up by this thing 🤯😦 then my mom yelled and I went running to the back wall and ducked under the blankets and pillows and hid. It was crazy!

overshoot actually happens a lot, the cell can grow from nothing in just an hour or 2. The cells can become extremely violent but only in a small areas as they keep changing as they move through. I recall one electrical hail storm that has constant lightning a strike about 0.2-0.3 sec apart often multiple strike at same time, and it was very loud.

Seen some similar explosive convection in summer storms here in Brisbane, Australia. Not quite this extensive though! Usually a good boiling tower or three then it's upon us or moves on. I was showing a person a tornado on the ground yesterday I filmed in freezing temperatures in Bartlesville oklahoma on 1-25-23. This person was over 60 years old and had never heard of a tornado touchdown in freezing winter temperatures. I'm 49 and only once saw and filmed it.

Thank you so much! Yeah, storms can get crazy tall. The tallest on record I believe was 75,000 ft. If you think this storm is big, a couple years ago on June 11, there was a supercell 100 miles away over Manhattan, KS. And the anvil cloud stretched almost to St. Louis and casted a shadow into Arkansas! It is one of the early videos I published.

Dang dude you're a lucky guy to witness such a beauty from nature. My family is from Ohio but I currently live in North Carolina. We have our fair share of tornadoes in Carolina Alley but the tornadoes that happen are very weak. They're just little ropes that tickle the ground for a few miles before lifting back up. Well, I'm moving back to Ohio later this summer so I'll see more crazier weather up there. Hope you have a great day man & keep up the great work! Thanks man! 😁👍
