#80s #Pop #Story
Hey music junkies and vinyl junkies Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest 80s vinyl songs of all time for the music community and vinyl community.
If you’ve ever owned records, cassettes and CD’s at different times in you life or still do this is your place Subscribe below right now to be a part of our daily celebration of the rock era with exclusive stories from straight from the artists and click on our patreon link in the description to see our brand new show there.
It’s time for another Edition of Vox where we celebrate that greatest, most unique vocalist of the Rock and Roll me. For me this one is no brainer. There are a lot of singers who are so great at delivering a song that we take them for granted, even when they have sold tens of millions of records. Artists like Neil Diamond, Diana Ross and today’s honoree Lionel Richie.
Lionel has one of the most recognizable voices ever. For an 80s kid like me, he was such a huge part of my childhood and beyond, that hearing one of his songs is akin to having a amazing dinner with an old friend. His music is comfort food for the soul. I remember when Casey Kasem announced that he was one of only two artists who had written or co-written a number one hit for 9 consecutive years. It was no surprise. There are very few in the history of music who can write and record hits #1 hits in their sleep, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Lionel Ritchie, maybe a few others.
From the small, historical town of Tuskegee Alabama, comes one of the world’s most accomplished vocalists and lyricists……..Mr. Lionel Richie, Jr. Tuskegee has a population of only around 12,000 people, but despite its size, was a very important site in African American history. Tuskegee was the home of Booker T. Washington- a dominant leader in the African American community between 1890 and 1915.
Tuskegee was also the subject of the landmark 1960 civil rights case Gomillion (guh-million) vs. Lightfoot- reinforcing the protection of the 15th Amendment.
Long before emerging into one of all-time biggest selling artists, Lionel contemplated being a priest in the Episcopal Church, but that career path seriously conflicted with his childhood dream of being a universally beloved music artist…. He certainly couldn’t do both.
He made a firm decision about his future when he was a 19 year old student at the Tuskegee Institute. Lionel was a budding saxophonist, and rather shy, when he met Thomas McClary, a future bandmate with The Commodores. Thomas asked bashful Lionel if he would like to join their band to play sax, not knowing whether Lionel was a good player, or not. Lionel emphatically accepted McClary’s invitation.

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures either. If a song is great it’s great. An hour ago I was checking out at my dentist’s office and started dancing to “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall & Oates when it came over the loudspeaker. No embarrassment. And the woman making my next appointment only laughed “I know it, right?” I think we only put limitations on ourselves.

Any decent song will offend someone, inoffensive music doesn't challenge the listener. Old country seems to bother the most people in my experience, so I'm going to go with Jimmie Rodgers - In the Jailhouse Now.
Loved that they used Lionel’s All Night Long at the closing ceremony of the 1984 Olympics. It was so perfect!
Lionel Richie and Barry Gibb are the two greatest solo writers of the past 50 years. And check him out onscreen in the movie Thank God It's Friday... a classic disco movie from 1978.

If I had to pick a "Mount Rushmore" of successful singer/songwriters; Paul McCartney, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, and Barry Gibb. Stevie Wonder just missed the cut.
Again I cry when you bring up your relationship with your father, fantastic. Again I ask for a show on Seals and Crofts.

I remember watching lionel host the AMA in 85 when I was in high school "OUTRAGEOUS". Great singer and song writer, Much love and respect.
Glad you mentioned “Running With The Night” - the Deluxe Edition of Can’t Slow Down includes an instrumental version that extends the guitar solo a little. Rumor has it Steve Lukather had arrived at the studio and thought he was only warming up but was actually being recorded. Once he told the engineer “I’m ready!” they replied “You’re done!” One of my favorite guitar solos of all time!

Easy like Sunday morning 🌄. It's a all time favorite.
Lionel Richie was great with the Commodores and on his own. You're right, it's tough to list top 5 from both. So this is my top 5 for each: Commodores: 5. Three Times A Lady 4. Lady(You Bring Me Up) 3. Sail On 2. Easy... and yes, I always sing the guitar solo! 1. Still Lionel Richie: 5. Say You Say Me 4. Running With The Night 3. All Night Long 2. Truly 1. You Are They don't particularly go in that order.
"Hello" is one of my all-time favourites. ❤
Dancing on the Ceiling was a great tune. Loved the video. I still remember when a new album dropped and the DJ proudly announced: “And here’s more vinyl from Lionel!”
Easy is one of my all time favorites, it has so much emotion, from the liberating lyrics to the vocal performance to the phenomenal guitar solo, this song truly affects me as a life long musician. Great job Adam, you rock.
Lionel is definitely one of my all time favorites. Once again, you have done a fantastic job capturing his ability to write and deliver a song. You are a treasure because of that. I have an observation about Lionel’s fiver. You could just about throw a dart at his body of work and find five songs that anyone would place in their top five. Lionel is an amazing talent unlike few others.
Lionel’s voice provides such an array of emotions that you can find any song to fit any mood. Wandering Stranger will probably forever be my favorite of his. Such a beautiful song and his vocals on that track are some of my favorites that I’ve ever heard. Lionel has blessed the world with such great music and I’ll be forever thankful that he did.
Having grown up as all these events occured was wonderful. Born in '70, I feel I grew up in some these artist's best eras.

Lionel was so genuine in his delivery of his heart grabbing love ballads. There was never a doubt that he was all in emotionally when it came to his classic such as " Still". I just happen to be "lucky in love" at the height of his career and his songs just enhanced the romance in the relationship.
"All Night Long" never fails to lift my mood.

Lionel's solo album helped me through my first big break up- I played it in my car 5 hours from college to home, from home to college. Great voice. Specia1 video.
I am 34 now but when I was 11/12, my family drove a 100 miles or so to go on holiday and my parents would blast out Lionel Richie albums. Brilliant and very nostalgic.
Even though Lionel didn't sing it, my absolute favorite Lionel Richie song that he wrote was "Lady". I love, love, love that song! I also loved Kenny Rogers story of where Lionel wrote the second verse! 😂
Sail On … definitely my favourite Lionel song 🎼🎶
"Running With The Night" always brings back memories of my first love in high school. I was a Senior and she was a Freshman. I graduated and went on to college and she moved to another town but we kept in touch, even though our families were not happy with our relationship. She invited me to a football game at her new school and I drove down from college to meet her. We had to sneak around because her brother was at the game and would tell on us. We were sneaking away, cutting through the empty, dimly lit band hall and I tripped and knocked over a drum that rolled and made all kinds of racket. "Running With The Night" became our theme song after that. Unfortunately, we went our "Separate Ways" and lost track of each other. Life moved on...
Easy was the first ballad I heard that could have a GREAT guitar solo. I'm Still a rock guy, but it definitely gave me an open mind about other genres.

You must have read my mind when you described the reason why you love Sail On. I didn’t need convincing. Lionel Richie should be a part of everyone’s playlist.
That's my favorite Commodores/Lionel Richie song the way he deliver the vocals like a country singer and add a little bit of soul with it pure genius #SailOn #Songwriter #LionelRichie #Commodores
I was 11 when Sail On was released it's my favorite Commodores song when I hear it now it takes me back to that time in my life living in a small mountain town in Socal There was a lady who was in her 60's that watched me when my folks went out she was the neighborhood grandma grandma Sarria I knew her 14 years before her passing. After meeting her when I was 8 At 53 I listen to Sail On a lot and it takes me back to that time like it was yesterday every time I hear the verse Sail on down the line Ain't it funny how the time can go All my friends say they told me so But it doesn't matter It was plain to see that A small town boy like me Just wasn't your cup of tea I was wishful thinking I changed those lyrics and it gets me almost every time especially after losing my 26 year old son Jake I hear the lyrics as Sail on down the line Ain't it funny how the time can go My grandma Sarria told me so But I never listened It was plain to see that A big city boy like me Just wasn't their cup of tea I was wishful thinking I hear that verse like that because we lived in Orange County before moving to Big Bear that's what Sail On is to me
One of my favorite voices in music. Definitely in my Mt Rushmore of vocalists
Love Will Find A Way is an absolute gem. Can't Slow Down is a great album.
I love the breadth of your musical appreciation Prof! I feel the same.
He is too kind, too genuine and too humble not to love... A brilliant artist and an even better human. P.s. Faith No More's version of Easy is.... Mind blowing!! Top 3 cover of all time, just WOW.
Lionel Richie is a national treasure. He should be in every hall of fame that he is eligible for. He is one of the best judges ever on American Idol. His talent is immeasurable. Thank you Lionel Richie for bringing so much joy to all of us!!
Lionel was a big part of my childhood as well professor. When I saw him in concert a few years ago, it was incredible. He needs to be in the Hall of Fame this year. He is in 6th place.
There's 2 music acts that I have to make sure I am alone before letting loose. I recently lost My Black Card getting caught just listening to these 2 acts. Most Barry Manilow and Air Supply! I know word for word. "I'm all out of Love . I'm so lost without you. I know you were right believing for so long "🎶 . That's terrible I'm texting that song in my head! I guess these are the last days! An African American man singing Air Supply. Shh 🤫 keep it on the Down Low. I just earned my Black Card back . Somebody's knocking at my door 🚪. Shhh
Writing hits is one thing....writing GREAT Songs is another thing. Like few others, Lionel Richie wrote great hits that helped people get through difficult times by writing exactly what we needed to hear and have that ability to put it in a song just for you. Oh No and Still were two of those songs. I was lucky enough to hear those songs not only with my ears, but with my heart. A Great artist indeed.
Definitely one of my favorite performers. It’s kind of a shame though that most ppl only know his 80’s hits and earlier. His latter work is pretty damn good as well. It just never gets played on the radio.

It’s tough to pick a favorite Lionel Richie song! “Say you,Say me” is one of my favorites! “Stuck on You” , “Penny Lover” , “Running with the night” , “Love will conquer all “, Love them just as much!
I always have the feeling, listening to your videos, that if only the artists themselves were to listen to them, they would become your biggest fans. I cannot imagine Lionel Richie not listening to this and absolutely loving how utterly well you cover his career and how much you show an authentic love of music.
Mr Richie is first and foremost a huge hearted gentleman and genuine top notch great human being, then secondly the world’s #1 musical talent there aren’t enough wonderful words for this man. he is absolutely a God given gift to the world
Yes, Lionel Richie was definitely a major element of the soundtrack of my life. His work with The Commodores was great, but those first three solo albums, especially "Can't Slow Down", were timeless! In fact, there is not one bad track on "Can't Slow Down", but my all time favorite song on that album is one that was never released as a single, "Love Will Find a Way."
All of you who love these 70s songs by people like this should thank the people who created them because the records didn't just fall out of the sky even though, most times it felt like they were falling from the sky! The process demands hard work! it was a period of time that will never be equaled. But luckily, we still have the records and cds to keep us happy!
Love Lionel Richie's music. His solo work and with The Commodores, he recorded so many great songs. He deserved such a great episode to look back at his great catalog of music. Well done! Adam, on another subject, could you please do a tribute episode to the Everly Brothers? Over this past weekend, Don Everly died. His younger brother Phil died back in 2014. The Everly Brothers were one of the most important pioneers of 1950s rock (along with Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis). They influenced so many artists including The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon & Garfunkel. Along with the Doo-Wop groups, vocal harmonies in rock started with the Everly Brothers. Anyway, love your channel as you consistently spotlight so many of my favorite songs, albums and artists. You bring back such great memories.

He dominated two decades of music through and through.
I met Lionel & Jimmy Connors just after Connors had won Wimbledon 🎾 in 1982 at Carneys on Sunset. They were both way cool & interested in our " punk rock " fashions !
I remember first meeting Lionel at Auburn University fraternity row where the Commodores were playing the fraternity house next to the frat house we were playing. Some years and a few hits later we provided outdoor sound for the Commodores at 6 Flags in Atlanta. Some years and a few hits later, I worked the Dancing on the Ceiling tour as a crew person. I have nothing to say bad about Lionel and I would send best wishes to Topper, too.
I had the great opportunity to see Lionel and The Commodores, along with Wild Cherry, and LTD, in Little Rock Ark. We left that show, exhausted from dancing. It's a show I'll never forget.
Lionel Richie was my first concert, in 1984, so his music is a mental time machine for me. My 5’er… plus… 6. The Only One 5. Love Will Find A Way 4. Still 3. My Love 2. Sail On (original version) 1. Still In Love - this song means so much to me, that it was the second song that my wife and I danced to at our wedding. Great video, Adam!
5. Penny Lover 4. Ballerina Girl 3. Dancing ON The Ceiling 2. All Night Long 1. Say You, Say Me

1. Hello - I was actually shocked this wasn't #1 or #2 on your list. No brainer for me. 2. Still - One of the few songs that never fails to bring out emotion in me. So honest and true. 3. Three Times a Lady - Talk about the greatest love songs of all time and this has to be in the conversation. 4. Say You, Say Me - Epic song, epic movie, epic times. Hightide for the West. Will never be that great again. 5. Stuck on You /Easy - Yeah, I'll cheat. Both of these great songs are a tie for #5. I understand the desire to put some of Lionel's more upbeat songs on the list, but you just can't top these love songs. Greatest love song writer/composer/singer of ALL TIME.
The song I can listen to the most, and always makes me smile is the Commodores - Lady (You Bring Me Up). This is especially true accompanied by the video. Truly is a hard list to limit to 5 song. Just so many, that you can make an argument, to put on the list.
'Oh No' has a special place in my heart...largely due to the movie Last American Virgin.

One of the great things for me about USA for Africa and the "We are the World" sessions was the way so many Motown stable mates ended up reconvening in the same place to record the song. My 5 year old self didn't pay attention to that, but the adult me certainly did. " Easy" is one tune that I not only sang along to but have performed on stage with a couple of groups.
God I love Lionel Ritchie! Danced to All Night Long at my wedding! Faith No More does a very faithful version of Easy.
Professor you used the word sophistication... yes, Lionel is the epitome of sophistication! I agree with your top 5, but I also love the funky Brick House by The Commodores and Do It To Me from Lionel´s 1992 Back to front greatest hits package. Do it to me is like silk to the ears... very sexy without being crass and vulgar. It is a joy to hear you share stories from your younger self, professor. Thanks for an amazing video!
