This Simple but Genius Idea Revolutionized How Gigantic Ships Maneuver
Welcome back to the FLUCTUS channel for a discussion about how Azimuth thrusters are changing ship capabilities, as well as how some ships battle with Mother Nature herself.

Absolutely wonderful, I love your posts, so interesting.
As usual a very interesting video, it’s great because Hobart where I live has be come the port for supply and mechanical work John
Fantastic shots of the ship!!
"I was drifting an aircraft carrier the other day"...that's a serious flex when down the bar with your boys talking about their ricers.

How did you get your handle? Is it that every body likes your walnuts? Do you sell em? Is Is a reference to your anatomy hanging out the leg of your swim trunks? I gots to know!
Excellent shots on this video.
Thank you. Informative.
Diesel electric propulsion. Not new. I was on a 1939 tug that had it. I did not have the pods, used a shaft driven by 4 DC electric motors. It had 3000 shaft hp.
I really hope this inspires her to become a pilot.
Fantastic! Oct. 31, 2022.

At 4:45, you say they have in "increased turning radius", but wouldn't it be just the opposite, by having a REDUCED turning radius?

So basically turn the propellers into rudders huh? Makes you wonder why didn't we think of this sooner...
A Great Invention And Investment in Steering Technology, One does ask is their need for a Back Up Rudder System. On another Front and I would be keen to know if anyone has put a name to the Following. I am probably Presumtous on this as well but Vessel Fitted With Aqua Planes each Side of Vessel which can be Retracted and Extended given the Ocean Conditions. Two Bow, Four Amidships and Two Stern and on Each Side and Enabled with Latest Computer Technical to read the Movement of the Ocean beneath the Vessel and in Turn Each Aqua Plane in an Individual Manner with Computer making Split Second Decisions to how each Plane is to be Angled at for ease of Movement and possibly more Stability Control in Rough Weather. In the Case of an Aircraft Carrier the Launch and Retrieve Sequence means into the wind but when it's tough and rough maybe these could provide a Unique Perspective in Handling the Vessel. It's probably been thought of and I have only just thought about it myself and worked out the Engineering Basics for such A Computerized System but one which good assist also Cruise Liners and Container / Bulk carrying Vessel's. the video completely drifted into another topic about some big icebreaker
That ship was slicing through that ice like i slice my way around the golf course

Just like we overestimated Russia, we shouldn't underestimate Australia, and especially Japan. It's been a good while since the Japanese were at war, but they left an impression that's hard to forget, and historically they tend to hit WAY above their weight class. I'm glad they're on our side this time.
Presumably these thrusters would eliminate the need for a Tug
Surely the references to turning radius are wrong. A rudder cannot give a smaller turning radius than an azipod.
@cfdfirefighter
Жыл бұрын
While at speed it could. In dock the azipod can spin it in place something a rudder cannot do.
It's a really, really big trolling motor
I don’t think these will be used on the majority of tankers and freighters as the cost and maintenance isn’t worth the cost versus a shaft right off the engine. Cruise ships like these to self dock without tug assistance.

Yes, as you said a shaft right off of the engine. Many tankers and freighters don't even have neutral let alone reverse.

c'è molta altra roba da cambiare nelle propulzioni.
Is this an advert for ABB ?
1:15 I believe you mean INCREASE the turning radius.
0:20 what do you mean "close" to the stern of the ship? Is the furthest thing aft of the ship, NOTHING behind it.
The rudder stabilizes the natural yaw instability of any ship .To say that the presence of a directionally variable propeller (in this case a Kort nozzle) thrust eliminates instability is plain wrong. 1:46
outercase must be siliciumcarbon otherwise will consume electric more than used. e

One method for sealing is positive fill with oil. Thus no airspace to counter pressure.
@joeKisonue

A new seal design addresses redundancy, with four different lip seals against water and two against the bearing oil chamber. This arrangement separates the seal packages for water and bearing oil seals, ensuring only a theoretical possibility of water leakage into the bearing or into the sea.
