You are a great teacher, well done. I'm 72 years old & I've started several times, but I've decided this time is IT. I've Bookmarked several of your Videos & put the Shortcuts into a FOLDER so they will be at my FINGERTIPS (pun intended). KEEP WELL Mike.

'Only' 52 here, but it sounds like our stories are similar. Mike's channel was one of those that convinced me to jump back in and this video is a great example of why. He's one of those on my short list... inspirational and educational.

They are all beautiful, once you get the passion. I get a thrill from particularly beautiful and individual guitars. Has to be a positive reaction, though, right? I know someone who destroyed two of my beloved instruments. Can you imagine the kind of mind that destroys musical instruments? Getting back on track, I love all instruments, especially guitars, lately. Just wish someone would teach me.
I’ve been a drummer for 21 years. I’ve been wanting to play guitar for about 11 years. So thank you for being awesome.
hi mike, maybe you won't read this but just wanna say thank you so much for making this kind of video! It helps me a lot. I used to feel like i'm not improving at all but since i watched your videos and follow the practice routine (especially spider exercise), i can feel that i'm improving! :) i wish you're my teacher.

DAMN you’re so well spoken and much much more understandable than most of my teachers! You’re dope, man. You’ve earned a new subscriber.
I like that you are keeping it fun, when I started, playing guitar was so painful and serious to me, and I could not even think of experimenting and having some fun.
Finally, someone that actually teaches us something. You are a blessing bro. And you actually have a real personality not like every other mainstream sellout KZreadr
Hey Mike! I’ve been tinkering here and there with guitar for a few months now and feel like I’m ready to take it up a notch. I will be using your site to begin, thank you for all the material you put out and effort you put in!
Thanks man!!!im so grateful...you're so generous giving this lesson to us.
Thanks man. I've been playing for years but have just recently begun teaching. Your approach has really helped me focus on what to teach.
Thanks Mike! I got my guitar this Christmas and just now really started practicing. You’re a huge help!
You are a great teacher. Your explanations are clear and simple enough to understand for someone just starting out (me). Thank you.
Like some others I am also a new player. Starting lessons with you, before I have even bought a guitar! Learning music theory, fretboard, terms, scales, chords...the way you present the same material as others is what works for me. I find your descriptions not only helpful and beneficial then the demonstration and application of said theories makes everything click. Just watching has been great. I did make a poor attempt at drums as a teen, always had rhythm and a ear for tone and timing so I feel further ahead in just absorbing material from you. Thx Mike!
I signed up for this course a few weeks ago, looking to fill in the gaps in my playing, ( this is my fourth on line guitar course ) and I have to say this course is the best one i have found. I think mike has done a great job putting this web site together this utube is just an example of what you can expect from Mike's course
this may not be the greatest help for me since i’m an intermediate player but some of my friends are starting i learn guitar while being in quarantine and this will be a great tool for them. keep doing what you do :)
THIS...THIS is the guitar practice video I have been looking for. Thank you so much!!! 🎸
Fortunately , after searching and testing out a various method I can sincerely say you are the excellent at how you explain every steps of the way with great quality of visual. After all I just pick up a guitar two weeks ago and I never played any instrument before. Thanks for making learning fun and methodical.
Excellent advice and great teaching. Thanks!
This is a sweet summary. Thank you!!!
I like to run around the block amp in one hand while im pumping my guitar in my other hand to get my blood flowing. Whether im ready or not to practice is determined by how far i can yeet my equipment.

Thank you very complete professional lesson. Very very good teacher.
This video is just perfect for us beginners! Thanks!! 🤙🏻
Excellent Mike! Thanks mike
Been playing guitar on and off again for longer than I would like to admit. The reason Mike is so good at teaching is because he doesn't have those, "look what I can do moments" while teaching. The little moments of here is where it leads is also very helpful to new players. Light at the end of the tunnel type thing.
Thank you so much for making and sharing this practice routine video! It has just enough of a mix of theory and technique for all levels! There's so many instructors and programs out there, but this video swayed me to go with Art of Guitar. Thanks!!❤️

Yeah revising already- absolutely the BEST practice routine tutorial on KZread! You're a naturally gifted teacher!
great teacher, fun to learn
Top lesson .I've been messing with caged system for a while . This is a great lesson 👍🏻
Great tips Mike. I’ve been learning for a couple of years now, but most times I practice I jump straight into a song and don’t even think about warm up, or “calibrating”. No wonder I find practice a bit frustrating at times! I’m going to use your tips going forward. Thanks very much
Mike has a black belt in guitar 🎸
Great lesson!
2 really good Metallica tunes I play often, to practice on and to warm up with!! Well and plus their just fun little tricky patterns that you have to have Rhythm to make it sound correct!! One track I use Alot to warm-up my wrist and fingers is off their debut album Kill Em' All....the main starting riff well it plays pretty much throughout the song is ...."Jump In The Fire" it definitely helps practice my wrist strength and my muscle memory when I first learned to play that riff I had a hell of a time trying to 1st remember the pattern to play it as fast as on the record and 2nd was to finally practice it enough that now I can play that riff without looking!! And my 2nd Metallica riff I use to practice/warm up with is Metallica's 5th studio album their "Self-titled album" but most people call it "The Black Album" and the song I like to practice on is "Through The Never" that intro riff.....it's fairly easy to play the right frets but the sort of hard part is remembering the correct pattern on which strings on which fret in what order? Soo that took some time to learn and it does definitely help to first start out just slowly learning the pattern of the riff once you know what strings and frets then it's about keeping the pattern right and playing it at the speeds it's played on the album and that's where it can get tricky but In my option it's a great riff to warm up on and of course Seek and Destroy is a fun one to play to aswell!!
Super helpful for a beginner. Thank you!
Love your videos! Great content, great teacher! Keep up the great work!! Thanks :)
You’re a great teacher!
Thanks, I'm doing some teaching myself and this will be helpful to cover multiple half hour lessons.
I’m in Minnesota too.
Exactly what I’ve been looking for to really solidly the foundations after a few months of playing. This is perfect. Going to try and implement this with the addition of separating songs into ego and project songs like Steve Stine suggests. See how this goes for a few months and see how it goes
My favourite way to remember the string names is “Easter Bunny Gets Drunk At Easter”.
Love that T-shirt! And your lessons!
Thank you for this!
Excellent! I really liked the step-by-step process. I'm going to make that into a chart to hang on the guitar stand. I like those strums and will be working on those. You reminded me that each string has an octave. The musical "math" is amazing: the octave pattern is the same on each string--open string pluck, then 2 frets, 2 frets, one fret, 2 frets, 2 frets, 2 frets, one fret. There are the 8 "do-re-mi" notes we all know. And that is "My Girl"-- C . . . D E G A C, C . . . D E G A C I'll put that riff into my practice. Keep up the good work!
Really helpful thank you!
Thanks for the basic stuff!!
This is awesome Mike I needed a change bad I have been a little bit all over the place. I was doing good with my instructor then the virus hit. Great video
Hi, I am a more advanced player and normally go straight into playing. I have never tried your spider exercises. Hey man, They really help with flexing your fingers especially as I am a lead Guitarist. Thanks!
I've been playing guitar forever and consider myself all right at it: making a few songs of my own and doing panhandling performances at my college to pay for lunch. Recently I got gifted a guitar from my friend and then a few days later I found a perfectly good Yamaha in the trash room of my apartment building. I guess it's time to watch more of your videos 😂
AS 1 of your students from the website, I'm doing everything you stated here up to the point of the 3 Minor chords, thats my next step. You actually answered one of my questions on metronome strumming . I tried to match the beat on your example strumming and it come out to 120, so thats the speed I practice at. Its way too fast for me to be honest so Ill crank it back to 80 as you showed here. I do a lot with the metronome, I'm one of those nerd that like walking away feeling like I did algebra.
So good!
Great lesson and awesome shirt.
I just started playing guitar and I'm losing motivation to keep on playing cause I just feel so lost and don't know what to do. I am gonna try this tommorow and I think it will help me start a routine for myself.

Try learning with tabs videos some simple songs that you love, 1 or 2 of them. That's what I started with, not scales or anything but 4 months in jamming Metallica every day the theory stuff doesn't seem nearly as daunting now.

I hope it works out well for you, Freddie. The importance of having an organized, planned out practice session cannot be over stated. I think all of us have wasted lots of time noodling around on chords and scales and playing with effects and gear. I think following the organized plan he lays out in this video will help you make progress quickly. I love Rock, Blues, and Metal but I, personally, practice on acoustic because I want to HEAR my accuracy and HEAR every mistake. I don’t want distortion to hide anything at all-because later it will come back to bite.
I know that this is base level info, but I've been playing for 50 yrs and have managed to become a mediocre player and these exercises are stii very helpful even for a coffin dodger like myself. Kevin O'Rourke

Killer shirt dude! Mr. Miyagi would be proud!
And speaking of "Spider Exercises" one I can think of I play often because of how cool it sounds and it's just fun to play!! Is off Nirvana's Unplugged album with their cover of David Bowie's "Man Who Sold The World" .......I'm really not sure what you call this specific part in the song I'm talking about maybe it's called "The Bridge" of the song.....or actually it may be considered just the Chorus of the song.....but the part where Kurt is singing...."Who Knows?...Not Me, We Never Lost Control....Your Face.....To Face.....With The Man Who Sold The World!!" So during that part where he's singing all that.....RIGHT before Kurt starts playing the main riff you hear as soon as the song starts.....but it's played down low, towards the top of the fretboard but it's definitely a "spider exercise" and I've been practicing that part Soo much that now I can play it actually faster than the normal recording and can do it without looking!! But that's also a REALLY GREAT exercise to work them fingers and it's fun to play and sounds cool
Only practice needed - Wax on, wax off. Right hand, left hand. :) Nice job dude. I'm going to implement this stuff in my warmup routine.
Thanks!
Love the karate kid top youve got on man I loved that movie when I was a kid👍

Great lessons Mike. Thanks for all the free help! I really like the look of your HSS strat with metal nut. Is it a custom shop model? You should do a vid on your guitars, and what an experienced player values about the features and differences in each one. Much thanks

Dude, you ain't played an SG.
Best teacher on KZread!!!! I'm about to buy your program this week! Cheers from Brazil!!!
Lol when you were strumming the EMajor chord I kept expecting to hear the chord change to that song by the Black Crowes I forgot the name of the song but it starts off with an acoustic guitar I think it's called "She Talks To Angels" or something similar to that but Everytime you were strumming that E chord that's all I kept hearing in my head lol
IMO, the coolest way to learn where the notes are, is improvising on a single string at a time while naming the notes. You quickly find cool licks, it's a lot of fun.
Apegiating the D chord btw is used in the beginning of Knocking on Heavens door...least the guns version

I just started my membership on your website. Hopefully I can pick up what you are putting down. While I am practicing, should I be using my amp as well? I feel/hear like I'm hitting the notes (currently i'm trying to get familiar with spider exercise and e and a majors) but sometimes the sound the string makes isn't as noticeable.
