This scientist spent 20 YEARS studying EVERY Biblical genealogy!

Ойын-сауық

In this episode Nancy S. Dawson enters the Dojo to talk about why she spent 20 years cataloguing EVERY genealogy in the Bible, how her background in biology and taxonomy uniquely equipped her for it, and why genealogies are not the boring lists we often think them to be!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to say thanks for watching the podcast! I did make a mistake in giving an example for "papponymy" (the ancient convention of naming a child after a grandparent). The example should have been Nahor, the son of Terah, who was named after his grandfather (Terah), see pages 9-11 in the book. I used the example of Terah (which was incorrect because Terah's grandfather was Serug). Glad to have careful listeners!

Thank you JM for bringing this remarkable resource to life. I was watching the interview with bated breath. Part of the reason I follow your channel is that I'm Bible Nerd, as most of your audience, and since early childhood I was dreaming of becoming an archaeologist, but I became a teacher. Now I see that God wired me to dig deep into His word. Genealogy is very close to me, I also named my sons after grandfather and the other one after great grandfather. I don't have access in Poland to many English resources. I have to pick them wisely and this is the one I will definitely continue studying for the rest of my life. And I was devastated after watching the review of the Archeological Study Bible on your channel to find out it's been discontinued. The content is what I enjoy reading. Maybe, one day, the publisher will put it back to print and I will be able to purchase it. Thanks once again for your work!

This is a phenomenal book. When I did the 1st nine chapters of 1 Chronicles, I drew the genealogies out in a notebook. So I was naturally excited to get her book. Very detailed and nice visuals which really adds enjoyment to bible studies. I do have a question though, if this author reads the comments….on page 47 regarding Numbers 46 (the second Census) - in the “Note” section it says “the summation of the persons in the tribes of Israel listed below, omitting the Levites, adds up to 606,730 revealing an unaccounted for discrepancy of 5000 persons (ie. 606,730 vs 601,730)….. the number 601,730 is correct. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how the number 606,730 came to be. I checked the 1st Census in Numbers 1:1-47 and the 2nd Census here but I’m not seeing that number in scripture. 🤔 (the Table chart on page 53 - Census #1 and Census #2 columns - numbers are correct.)

What an amazing interview! of such an amazing person! I had wondered, as I was reading the OT not so long ago, whether somebody had ever sorted out all the genealogies in the Bible, and I assumed somebody must have - but until very recently that clearly wasn't so. Of course I have the book, but I have it in Logos, where it's so much more facile to use the book!

LOVE this book, author, and channel - keep up the great work! Particularly illuminating are these two observations: (1) that, in the Old Testament as in the New Testament, Gentiles were grafted into Israel - God’s covenant family, God’s kingdom; (2) that we too, whatever our genealogical stock, may enter that same family - that same kingdom - by faith and baptism. Theologically speaking, therefore, Gentile Christians are members of the fulfilled kingdom of Israel; and non-Christian Jews are called to become such members. With respect, I’d like to point out one (small?) error on p. 398. (What follows summarizes part of my doctoral dissertation: _Fulfilled Israel according to Matthew’s Plerosis Paradigm_ (Mohr Siebeck, 2024). Dawson, et al, interpret the summary in Matthew 1:17 as designating the following three eras: (1) from Abraham to David; (2) from David to Jechoniah; (3) from Jechoniah to Jesus. And yet, a closer reading reveals that Matthew does not affirm Jechoniah to be the limit between the second and third kingdom eras. Rather, he places the deportation to Babylon there. And the deportation occurred _during_ Jeconiah’s generation. By gratuitously assuming Jeconiah to be the limit, one introduces a new problem into the text: Matthew’s structure involves three eras, each of which measures 14 generations. But - as the authors rightly note - Christ has only 40 male progenitors. Historically, many (mutually exclusive) solutions have been given to this problem: (1) Matthew miscounted; (2) Matthew’s count included a generation other than these 41; (3) Matthew double-counted a generation. Unfortunately, none of these solutions stands out as definitive. In 1:17b, Matthew’s stated task is to measure “from David to the deportation to Babylon,” and part of Jechoniah’s generation falls during this time. The principle of inclusive reckoning dictates that Jechoniah’s generation, albeit incomplete, be counted. The same principle applies to the period after the deportation that fell during Jechoniah’s generation. Again, this period did not cover Jechoniah’s entire generation. Nevertheless, Matthew’s stated task is to measure “from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ” (1:17c), and part of Jechoniah’s generation falls during this time. The rule dictates that Jechoniah’s generation, albeit incomplete, be counted. The apparent ‘problems’ of Matthew’s genealogy disappear once read in this light. Matthew envisioned three consecutive (non-overlapping) eras. And this vision can be defended quite literally, without assuming a sum of 42 generations, a mathematical blunder, a missing generation, or an arbitrary double-count. These observations have important theological implications: they shed light on the Davidic Kingdom which Christ came to restore - a subject I address more deeply in my book. Who knows, maybe it could contribute to a Second Edition of Dawson’s wonderful book.
