As I understood, DCI-P3 will have worse color gradation and not so wide color gamut, but better accuracy, compared with BT2020. Which option would you suggest for average user who don't want to change settings all the time?

    I set the brightness to 100% (white) on my 55S95b monitor for a total consumption of around 130-140 watts and turned off both peak brightness and contrast enhancement. The temperature stays below 40 degrees with these settings. The reason for the burn-in is the high power density with a 10% window (1000 nits) and thus temperature that cannot be dissipated quickly enough. I use the S95B as a PC monitor.

    Given there are no brightness or screen coating differences, Samsung could and _should_ make firmware adjustments/improvements on the S95B to make them perform like an 'old panel' S90C. I realise that would make buying the early S90C's fairly pointless but that's Samsung's problem, LG make firmware improvements of this sort to their legacy OLEDs for years after the fact. Samsung should be making the improvements between these two models more stark, by not cheaping out and using this year's panel on the S90C as a starter for 10.

    This is a tough one. As we know the 77" has to be using the new deuterium compound, it can't be last year's panel. But the 65" like this, could be. the new compound is a massive selling point making the 65" too much of a purchase risk for me. Unless the screen reflective finish is different on all 2023 panels

    Yeah, but will they adjust the 77" to match the 65" in performance? In any case, 77" is just too big for me. Looks like Samsung is out again this year. I'd be willing to overlook the drawbacks, but also having to use the lesser 2022 panel (or a 2023 panel throttled to be like the 2022 panel) just makes it not worth it. Sony is far too expensive. And LG has that dumb green tint that's very obvious to me. Seems like my plasma has to last yet another year, because nothing on the market is worth getting and brands that could create good TVs at reasonable-ish prices stick to LG panels.

    @@kadajawi6567 I don't think all the s90c 55" and 65" will use the old panels because there probably isn't enough if them (I may be wrong) I think it will be a mix/lottery like LG did with the other year. I suppose you're right though that they'll have to throttle back performance to the old panel level for parity which means you're not getting the full fat version. If that's the case it'll be disappointing - however there will still be superior durability advantages with the 77" s90c for sure. And if they are rude enough to use the old panel on the s95c they'll be people who'll be very unhappy for sure.

  • @kadajawi6567

    @kadajawi6567

    @@lancealex382 I'd say for now they'll only use gen 1 panels, until they run out of them. Then they'll switch to throttled gen 2 panels. However there'll be old stocks floating around, so it will take a long time until buyers can be half way certain to get a new panel. If they didn't have many to begin with and are already producing gen 2 models, this decision would be even dumber. For the S95C I highly doubt that they'll use the old panels, because the TVs wouldn't be able to match specs (and IIRC comparison videos have already shown the superior performance of the S95C). I just wish they had continued producing S95B (even if they call them S85C) until stocks run dry, and went with two gen 2 TVs rather than one for this year.

    Considering the S95B is close to costing half as much as the S90C, I think that's a bit of a no brainer. If you're willing to spend S90C money, the price increase to the S95C, which WILL get you the panel with less burn in, better performance, better features and better sound may very well be worth it. Bloody shame that they ruined the S90C just to get rid of a couple of panels... and I think it might bite them, because what's the point in the S90C? The S95B is mostly the same TV, in parts it's even better I guess (sound?). It does look better. It is significantly cheaper. And the S90C isn't very compelling, not at the current price. It needs to drop significantly in order to become interesting, even if it had the new panels. But that's going to be lottery, no matter when you buy the TV... you might find old stock. They could charge more for the S90C if it only had the new panel and was fully unlocked. And they'll be wasting their fantastic panels on TVs that have to sell for less because they aren't making use of those panels. Panels they could be selling to a TV maker that could actually make use of them. But yeah. Samsung making hard to understand decisions isn't uncommon, is it? Like with their insistence on not having DV. They could charge more by it having DV, but nope, it's not there. So they are losing sales to Sony or worse LG.

    I think, once the old panel stock goes away, they will use the 2023 QD-OLED panels on S90C. Of course, the brightness will be soft-limited, but the reliability of the new panel is 2x compared to last year (plus energy savings). I wonder whether there is a way to differentiate between the two panels (either with a microscope or in the service menu)

    Yes, but how can you make sure to get the new panels? There'll always be old stock floating around, especially considering that you'd have to be rather mentally challenged to buy a S90C at this point. Most in the know will probably be waiting for newer stock, meaning Samsung will be sitting on a ton of S90C for quite a while. And regular buyers will be more attracted to the S95B, which is a lot cheaper. Until it is sold out. I suppose since Samsung will have a hard time selling the S90C, they will have to lower the price quite a bit...

    A very important fact to consider. I heard that the s95b didn't come in a 77" size because the panels weren't ready. With that in mind, maybe the 77" size became ready, and the 77" s90c does use a very similar or even the same panel as the other sizes. This is entirely hearsay, of course. I also wonder when the price of the 77" s90c will come down and at what price it will settle at.

    Could someone explain to me the nerf deal, besides the fact that they butchered game mode. Rtings tested the S95B on May 13th, 2022 with firmware v 1211, and the 2% and 10% windows in HDR using 'Filmmaker' mode were 1,028 and 1,036 nits respectively. I'm guessing 'Movie' mode would have been higher still. On July 20th, 2022 Rtings put this in their notes: "We retested the peak brightness in HDR with the latest firmware, 1302. The TV no longer produces bright flashes of around 1400 nits in the 'Movie' and 'Game' modes." Is 1302 the nerf many are talking about? Rtings didn't publish 'Movie' mode results outside of this update, and what are "bright flashes"? If they're talking about specular highlights I can see why many owners are upset.

    Both gens of QD-OLED panels are significantly more resilient to burn in than the CX based on rtings testing. It was the latter LG models that seemed more resilient (ie the C2 seems to be faring a lot better than previous C-series models), but I think that was due to a bug preventing the QD-OLEDs from running their compensation cycles. So while it isn't clear which modern OLED panels are more resilient. QD-OLEDS should still be noticeably better than a CX.
