    I worked in retail for a year and the scariest thing to ever happen was once when I crawled inside a circular rack of coats to grab a tag on the floor. While I was still in there some customers came over and started sorting through the coats, and I missed the appropriate window of time that would have been acceptable to come out so I just sat there while they browsed, hoping they wouldnt see me

    Kevin, if you wanna try reliving this nightmare again, here are some tips that might help: -you can yeet the boxes onto the customers to stun them -the timer only starts when you start stocking, not when you pick up the box so you can actually place the boxes in their appropriate aisle at the start of the shift *then* start stocking. -look around before stocking so the coast is clear otherwise, listen for their respective sounds -stock all the shelves within the timeframe and you win! .... Day 1 at least lol. Like so Kevin sees!

    As a retail employee contractor for the last 18 years, I can say this is so accurate. Remember, no matter what has happened, it's ALWAYS your fault and the customer will "go and shop at your rivals" Apparently saying "off you go then" is a bad thing...and that's the story of how I lost my job in retail.

  • @eaglefan2569

    @Sylvester Unfortunately a lot of places still run on "the customer is always right" logic in those situations. Got a warning myself for a retail job just for asking a customer to not reach over the counter into the spare change because it was store policy. Unfortunately some management just don't care for their worker's well-being.

    @Sylvester haha honestly I was just joking. I have a slightly unusual retail job where I don't work for one particular retail brand. My retail experiences made my depression worse. Worked at a local grocery store as my first job when I came of age and boy was it bad. Despite being hired on as a part-time bagger I was forced to work well over the legal minor limit, including three separate Saturdays where someone "didn't show up for their evening shift" and I had to do both my mid and evening shift. Got my first warning for following store policy by politely asking a customer not to reach over the counter for the spare change and was about to grab it myself when said customer exploded on me, insulted me, and slandered me in from of my coworker at the register, who said and did nothing in my defense. Said customer was given a pie and store credit for "my mistake". Second warning I got was on the last one of those extra long Saturdays. Was told to take my final mandated 15 minute break so I did. Halfway through it I was called to help at the register despite other workers being available. Got the warning issued by a manager I used to think was nice because "I didn't respond fast enough". Never got to finish that break either. Despite being hired on and only paid for being a bagger, I had to do janitorial and cashier work, genuinely working the register, cleaning the bathrooms, sweeping and mopping the floors, and even had to help other departments with their chores. I got called in by the owner to discuss the warnings and I answered earnestly about them. Was pretty much told that "I was an excellent worker but one more warning would get me fired". Note that this was on a day I had off. Not really grand for a 16 year old girl to face with depression. Went home and worried my siblings by locking my room and contemplating suicide from all the stress I was enduring. My mom was nice enough to comfort me when I got home and confronted the store on this and let them know I was quitting effective immediately. It's turned me off from customer service ever since. Still feel icky thinking about it even though it's been five years. Sounds a bit unreal but it's the truth. Haven't really had much cause to share my retail horror story. Learned some good things from working there but it's scarred me more than helped, both thanks to the customers and coworkers. Oh, quick edit while I remember. I also on occasion worked behind the customer service desk and sold cigarettes a good 12 times... despite being 16. Definitely a stellar place.

    Brace yourself. Keep a "kill them with kindness" mentality. The worst customers will jump on any sign of weakness like fucking jackals, especially if you're already having a bad day. I literally had a customer ask to speak to a manager because I refused to smile on cue. When she pushed the subject, I said I didn't feel like smiling that day and she wanted to get me fired for that after ringing her purchase. And pray you have a half-decent manager, although I think that's statistically against you. Most managers are lazy asshats who sit in their office most of the day and fold and take the customers' side to all but the most ridiculous complaints.

  • @newmixgirl

    @newmixgirl

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good luck! Retail is a tricky thing but after working for about 10 years my advice is just do your job and don’t get involved in co worker drama cause it’s not worth it. Most customers are pretty neutral or nice and just want to get their stuff and leave; most will prob ignore you and it’s low key a blessing. Don’t fold and don’t be afraid to say no because like some said they can always tell when you’re new at this. Don’t believe their bullshit stories about they were able to do something before as its most likely false. If they want to complicate things give it to your manager cause you’re not paid enough to make them happy if they want to fight policy.

    For someone that works in retail, I can confirm that this is accurate xD They captured the stress and anxiety quite well, and the feeling of dread whenever you hear a customer say EXCUSE ME! Why, just yesterday I was constantly harrassed by this same couple that wanted to know the price of everything they wanted in the store, I couldn't take two steps without them coming after me. It was like they either couldn't read or didn't believe the price tags.

    This video could use a seizure warning. I'm not joking, my eyes literally hurt from watching those flashing graphics and grainy textures moving around.

    I always feel so bad asking retail workers for help like "hey do you have this brand of guinea pig food I know you probably have better things to do but they kinda need it to stay alive but I'm sorry if I'm wasting your time please don't mind me"

    mental Retail CAN be fun! well, for some people. i did it for years and loved it because i was good at it and liked being busy. however, i also have some horror stories. like one guy that screamed at me because things weren't moving along quick enough for him, even though it wasn't my fault, and then he took a step forward, like he was physically coming for me, and i had to go into the break room and call my (male, large) manager to come help me. retail can really bring out the worst in people.
