When the family hauler starts to show signs of trouble, it often gets pushed ahead of other projects that we may be working on. In this case the trusty and usually trouble free 2005 Yukon XL has thrown the infamous Check Engine light. Based on my history with this vehicle, I had a hunch it was something moderately simple and I knew that I still needed to run through my diagnostic routine to make sure that it really was an easy fix. Follow along as I show you how I’ve diagnosed this thing and how to show you a systematic approach to finding the issue.
I grabbed my scan tool, my Topdon Artidiag 900BT, and plugged it in. After running through the normal stuff, I found that the code was a P0101, which is a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor performance issue. Something that I really like about this scan tool is that it was able to show me some of the history. It showed that this had failed and then passed it’s internal checks and balances. This tells me that this has been an intermittent failure and that there may be more going on than meets the eye.
Upon removal of the MAF, there were a few small fuzzy weed seeds on the screen that were carefully removed. I placed it over white paper towels in case there was a lot of debris I could see what was getting in there. Using the MAF cleaner, I sprayed it off and did not find any significant debris. I also vacuumed out the air box because it seemed like a good thing to do while I was in there.
With the MAF being moderately clean, I spent some time looking at the connection for any signs of corrosion, broken, or questionable wires that may be an issue. If this problem persists, I’ll be looking at the voltage readings on the wires to ensure that there isn’t an issue in the wiring. With no wiring issues to be seen, I reinstalled the MAF and went for a drive with the scan tool plugged in so that I could watch the live data for any anomalies. There were no signs of issues on the test drive and everything seemed to read correctly. It seems like the MAF may have had some residue or dust on it from it’s over 300,000 mile life so far. Based on a few drives after making this video, there have been no issues pop up, so I believe I’m in good shape and should be good to go.
