it is real i found the article. in terms of legality there's windows in every bedroom and most laws just require a bedroom to have a point of egress. this is like 2020s version of tenement housing though it seems awful. the main house looks alright but the "dorms" are icky.

I've lived in a 9 bedroom house with roommates. It was pretty awesome, to be honest. The place was huge and had a layout that made no sense, you didn't really bump into each other unless you wanted to. We had 2 kitchens, though, which helped a lot in that regard. NINETEEN bedrooms with only one kitchen? .... yeah that's gonna be a no from me, dog.

My dorm building has maybe 30 bedrooms with only one kitchen. Needless to say, I avoid it all costs because it's always filthy and smells bad. We also have three bathrooms except they're more in the style of a public bathroom with 3-5 stalls in each and 2-3 showers. It sucks, but it's a college dorm so that's expected I think

History behind the home - "Initially built in 1910, the property underwent major extensions in the 1980s and became a retirement and nursing home. It was later used for student accommodation. The most recent owner was an older woman, who lived in the property along with her tenants. Now, it is a deceased estate and the family has changed its classification from commercial to residential."

I highly recommend looking at the photos, they're even more insane than James makes it out to be. The white picket fence in the kitchen with the stove completely cuts off access to the stairs that are there, I saw at least two fireplaces blocked with furniture- one with a couch (like a futon) and one with a set of table and chairs. It was a retirement/nursing home before it became student housing. Apparently at the time the article was made, there were five people living there (minus the owner who recently passed away), and the rent was $185 per week. I looked it up and the average rent in the suburb is apparently $500-$550, so.... it's a pretty good deal. They're looking for someone to buy it, but they're not sure whether it'll continue being student housing, or demolished and split into two houses.

One thing i've learned from building RL floor plans in sims, is take some liberties with them. Hallways that are one tile wide don't work in game play, sims are constantly blocking each other and start walking through walls or get stuck in them and auto teleport. Basically you have to make everything at least 1x1 bigger than the floor plan, especially because the sims furniture is WAY oversized. So a 2x3m room should be a 3x4m room in sims. etc etc. The house ends up looking much nicer and will actually function for gameplay.

This reminds me of the sketchy places I had to stay to keep from being homeless. Definitely unpleasant, but I do like weird/quirky layout choices that make houses more unique. Like one house I lived in had doors to the outside on the third floor, but both of those doors led directly into the bathrooms, and you had to climb the most rickety ass staircase up the back of the house the entire three flights if you wanted to go through them.

These kinds of "houses" are definitely real, and they "prey" / cater to people who have no other choice other than being homeless. The developers who convert these monstrosities from "normal" flats into this kind of accommodation mostly take advantage of youngsters leaving care, immigrants and the most vulnerable of people whilst taking government or local authority funding, whilst making profit.

This house is in my home state of South Australia. It used to be a nursing home, so its layout made sense then. Recently it became student housing as one of our universities is not too far away from this suburb. It’s not really odd considering it’s initial purpose, it’s only odd because it’s now being sold as a residential property - but probably wouldn’t sell as commercial as it’s quite run down. It’s very likely going to get demolished and have the land subdivided and built on, like most large lots nowadays. From memory it’s close to the beach too, so it’ll be a popular area to buy if it is redeveloped.

This build’s shell could be repurposed into a really cool community-focused lot since the lot is IRL in the middle of a suburb. Each of the “bedrooms” could be private work, study, and art spaces, and the main house could be a house for the owner/ groundskeeper. The “kitchen” for the “rooms” could be for community cooking seminars (as idk how things are in Australia, but in America public schools have an extremely small or nonexistent home ec budget). It would absolutely be a philanthropy project, but it would be awesome. I’m gonna use this shell for my basegame + basegame mods and basegame cc save. My sim (yes, I currently only have 1 sim) has the savings to be a philanthropist. I’m gonna build this lot as a “library” but I’m gonna calc out the build and furniture and then deduct it from my sim’s money with commands. My sim’s career is freelance programming, so I don’t have to deal with the sim being required to return to the home lot that often. It’ll be slightly jank without GTW features, but it’ll finally be a new way to “play” my sim.

Is this weird? My college dorm was essentially a giant "house" stuck in the middle of a normal suburban neighborhood. Had way more than 19 rooms. If I had to guess I'd say at least 70. Honestly I liked it better than the normal on-campus dorms. Most of the rooms were singles, so you didn't have to share, and we had semi-private bathrooms (private bathroom shared between 3-4 people) instead of big communal bathrooms like standard dorms. And being on a normal street was nice. It you felt like you were in the real world, not locked away in some weird dystopia where everyone is 18-24. The only thing it was missing was air conditioning. Dear god, the lack of air conditioning killed me in the warmer months. EDIT: ok, having seen more of this layout I retract my question. we may have had a giant house in a suburban neighborhood with a ton of rooms, but at least our layout made sense what the hell is this

I loved that you made this house. I saw the same article this was in and was pretty keen to recreate it. I chose to just stick with what felt like the original house so I don't have 19 bedrooms but yours looks amazing. I always love watching your builds.

I think the number of toilets and showers is fine. I used to live in a house with 5 people and only 1 toilet and shower. We managed fine for over 10 years. You have more options with this setup even though the ratio is close to the same. I hope they have additional hot water heaters though because otherwise, it would be tough with most people having to take cold showers.

When I was in college, our whole class traveled to a conference in another state and we stayed in a place almost exactly like this. It was an old lady's house and she had built like a gazilion of tiny bedrooms to rent to students. But it was kind of worse than this for 3 reasons: 1) there was, I kid you not, only one bathroom and one shower for all the rooms, and the door was broken 2) the whole thing was on the second floor of her house, and the stairs to get there were really really steep and 3) we had to share the ridiculously small bedrooms, so it was like two people sleeping together on a single bed in these really small rooms. Oh, and you could tell that she actually divided every room in half at some point, because all the windows were like half in one room and half on the other, the wall was built like in the middle of the windows. It was not a pleasant experience.

I'm shocked that at any point that was once a functional nursing home. I know the 80s could be wild, but not putting nana, pop-pop and Mrs Matheson in the back sheds wild. Somehow it being weird student accommodation makes it a bit worse. The rooms with lots of doors were probably prep/drug rooms or office or overnight nurse accommodation. Now they've been forced into being bedrooms, it's so much weirder

Heyyy this kind of house + student housing is very common in my home country ahahah places where the home owners/"landlords" live in the same place is more trusted by the parents, it's indeed cheap mostly for single person like students or workers but lately there's a lot of similar places for couples too because you know property prices is getting ridiculous, I've been living in this kind of place since I was 15 from a 'house' with 12 bedrooms to 42 bedrooms, met a lot of amazing people since we're sharing kitchen, bathroom and lounge with others ahahah good times, thank you for sharing James! Keep up the good work!

Discover University shower stalls also work with allowing multiple sims to shower without issue. They used those in the dorms. As I write this though, I wonder if it’s because it was a dorm lot the showers worked that way…

This is the most random house ever if you look at the photos on the website, one room has a guitar amp, a couple rooms have computers, random mideval shield, break room area and a kitchen area and random room with a refrigerator and a large wardrobe. This place is so random lol. Feel like it fits into a legal grey area lol. Start over maybe, maybe not may be more expensive to build new then to remodel.

10/10 for the effort to build this and doing a great job. 2/10 for it existing in real life. I saw an article for this house. It needs a lot of love or a bulldoze. As for using it in sims, I could see it being used in a 100 baby challenge. Each kid gets a tiny room and an extra room for desk/hobbies.

This sort of building random boxes as addition to the house was popular during the 60's- 80's. Bad floorplanning, box rooms, no real lighting, narrow hallways... and don't forget vinyl or linoleum floors.

I kind of love this lot and I know a lot of people don't. In LA, there is a style of apartments called a "Bungalow court apartment" where many, essentially studio or 1 bedroom cottages are centered around a courtyard that has plants, sometimes a fountain. LA also has apartments that are large boxy buildings called Dingbats. I believe this lot is for people who are familiar with LA architecture to create one of their own, this would be challenging since Sims 4 doesn't let you build your own apartment for real, but that's what an awkwardly large lot in the middle of a bunch of houses would be used for.
