I had a thought regarding the KFm3 airfoil. To find the difference in energy usage in flight between covering up the steps versus uncovered steps. How much of a difference in flight time the steps make regarding the drag that they would produce while in flight. Hopefully it would be negligible. Thanks again for a great explanation of the KF concept.

Beautiful design and execution. For landing, how about coming in low, back off the airspeed, raise the nose high and stall out.

Nice build and fly demonstration. I started with a 3-channel motor glider. Moved up to a 4-channel trainer, and started building my own Flite Test Models. You should try a Simple Scout!

Yeah Flite Test models are great. The plane I show at the beginning is actually a modified version of FT Explorer, but it was a bit underpowered for good flying

You can make it a tailsitter by adding extended fins at wing tips and extended centre rudder as landing gears.

Hot glue worked great for my first good models, and it's great for quickly getting up and going, but you will absolutely LOVE e6000 and CA glue. As long as the Cyanoacrylate doesnt melt the foam you use, in which case I'd switch to EPP foam anyways The amount of weight vs the strength you're getting from all that hot glue makes things a lot harder to balance and fly well. Give the other glue's a try, I know you won't go back!

Oh hi, I love your channel! As for the VTOL, it is already on my to-do list. With a 4S battery and some airframe modifications, I think this plank might be up to the task😁

I made a plane like that before and we called it the big red boat. The engine was OS FP 40 and it was weak. We needed something like OS FS45 or 60 at the time.

Ditto. FS45 on my 'plank' which had a balsa sheet wing. Anything will fly with enough power 😂

To reduce drag, could you cut the back of the wing on an angle, similar to the front?

This is great! But I have a couple questions. Al Bakstrom's Plank planes, upon which this was based, required for longitudinal stability for the center of pressure to not shift in flight. This can be accomplished using a symmetrical airfoil or a reflexed airfoil like Max Munk's M-6 used in the original Pitts S-1. This KFM airfoil is clearly not symmetrical, nor does it appear to be reflexed, so does its center of pressure move? If it does, are you relying on the Ardupilot to provide artificial stability? Thanks again.

Delta wings do need a vertical stabilizer. The one at 1:09 is stable because of it's winglets. Gryos however can remove this requirement like with the B2 Spirit.

B2 uses split control surfaces to act as a differential rudder. Gyro controlled.

Good job here . What visual design software did you use for this project ?

65 roll 45 pitch in self-level works for me on new builds, in arduplane and iNav. Landing in self-level is as easy as pulling back on the throttle and elevator, balancing speed for altitude. I highly recommend FPV as your next step, as ardupilot and iNav both have very powerful On Screen Displays, for showing you telemetry, while your line of site is no longer your range's limiting factor. Yeah, the 45 roll limit I set was a bit to restrictive, thanks for the advice! As for the FPV I recently got myself a Walksnail digital FPV system , so I will have crisp picture on the ground and nice HD footage from the air. I am also experimenting with Mavlink Telemetry over ExpressLRS with AirPort soft, so that I could control the future crafts by simply setting waypoints on a map

I mean digital FPV is undoubtedly better so sooner or later we all have to switch. But the Walksnail goggles were way too expensive for my budget so I got myself a VRX instead. I am going to use it with my 24" PC Monitor on a tripod and you all can't stop me lol

I've made RC boats, jetboats, gliders, powered planes, airboats and the one time I used a gyro was on a jet boat to stabilise the vertical axis spin. I have to report I didn't like the result. Two reasons I can identify, 1. It was destructive to the boat's ability to surf, which otherwise self stabilises somewhat to the wave. 2. I designed my jetboat to lock in on turns with minimal sliding. So though it was great for maintaining a course heading, it took away the feeling of piloting the boat. Persevere with developing your piloting skills. Do new maneuvers with plenty of height to do recoveries and push your skills slowly. If you try loops, remember the g-forces act on the wings and too much dive speed can break a wing off. If you try rolls, do 360 rolls first and learn recovery the right way up before you practice upside down. Get used to the orientation changes for directions relative to you with a simulator. Stay well clear of trees and poles, pylons, I mean like 10 meters clearance. If you are flying upside down high, it's kind of cool to half loop up or down to switch back to normal. Flying is not like walking or cycling, a car, give yourself a huge frontal clear zone at all times. Be aware that too slow flying will result in a stall so practice with height so you have time to work out how to recover. Be mindful of reducing power and return it back to you before the power completely fails. For many hours of flying without needing a lot of battery recharges, use bungy launch gliders or get a slick glider and learn to do slope soaring. Slope soaring is quite blissful, I used to think flying gliders was boring until I saw the aerobatics possible.

How much more work would it be to add FPV to the setup?

This is a GREAT and informative video- IF you are open to it being one! As a 55 year old Engineer, I cringed early on at the initial design choices and soft and bendable materials used, as well as DUCT TAPE being used to both make the leading edge more aerodynamic and ALSO as a control surface hinge. It was almost as bad as thinking you will find ANY kind of real character development in a Star Wars movie. It was a very good idea to show what the Ausie's are building for Ukraine- the point made is excellent. There is a difference between GOOD, and GOOD ENOUGH. You HAVE to view this video in this way, and you will come to see that many "poor" engineering/design decisions are not really that bad- they more accurately, GOOD ENOUGH. Consider for example, the fact that none of the electronics are protected from "The elements" (that is to say the weather)- you COULD complain that everything can get wet easily.... OR you can acknowledge the genius- no need to do anything more to make sure the electronics stay cool. Lastly, this video is really funny.... the initial flying field is small. Very hard for a relatively inexperienced pilot, which this guy acknowledges he is....... SO, he goes to a BIG field to be safe- with ENORMOUS wind turbines nearby and even more enormous- MONSTER size power transmission towers VERY close by. These two things make the massive field an obstacle course- the wind turbines ready to slice your plane in half, and the massive transmission line towers ready to ZAP the plane like a bug zapper in your backyard. This video is not only eye opening and thought provoking, it is hilarious. WELL DONE!

Hi, thanks for such a long comment! I just wanted to clarify that in a world of hobby RC planes foam, tape, and hot glue are the most used materials. Guys from Flite Test have been building great planes with those for years. Sure it could be made more durable by using balsa wood or fiberglass but there is simply no point in doing so for a slow flying beginner plane. Moreover as you said some seemingly bad design choices were made on purpose, I could add a top canopy by simply attaching a piece of foam but I left it open to have fast access to electronics and to better cool the ESCs. Also the perspective can be a bit misleading on the last field, those wind turbines were way too far to slice my plane, the transmission lines were closer but it was still the best place I could find around my area :)

While my PREFERENCE is more refined engineering choices that lead to better performance and endurance, and quality, etc.- YES, what you say about the slow fly FPV community is right on- and it does impress me-very much so- planes that are built so simply and for so little money, and yet they GET THE JOB DONE. Good to hear the wind turbines are not so close by, and be careful with the big bug zappers.

How much did this build cost you? This is incredable.

Yeah I have a VTOL model in my plans, and this plank is actually an ideal plane to be converted into non-vectored tailsitter. So such a video is definitely coming!

Why not cover the KFM with film, so you can remove the vortex and reduce drag

That plane actually flies. Though it seems to me that it could be lighter and easier to fly. Even without on board autopilot. That KF airfoil looks promising at first, but you could use just a flat wing for better performance as it would be lighter and have less drag. The other thing, the foamboard, that with layers of cardboard on outside is a far better material than a floor insulation. It even allows to build a real profiled wing easily without all that rib structure. And the last, not least, the straight flying wing is not quite a best choice. Adding just a bit of sweep, like 20 degrees, allows you to shorten the nose and reduce the vertical planes. Both improve lift to drag ratio and reduce wing loading, making the plane easier to flight. It was naturally stable, qutie light and slow flying, so no need for artificial stabilisation whatsoever.

What if these had missile seeking abilities where as goal is simply to get in the way and fire compressed air projectiles at the warhead to disable it you could have 100,000 of these just sitting on rooftops in feilds wherever trickle charging on solar with a 2ndary battery to run the recording base station and linking them all into a camera network for live video mapping of area whislt simultaneously defending along with irorn curtain 177mm bbs at combined flightspeed and launch speed may be enough to peirce warheads and when in doubt just add an array of angles multiple projectiles like a shotgun and interchangeable weapons packages modular and easily repairable recyclable is key being more than 1 time use kamikaze although that strategy may also be used if deemed necessary to defend homeland

information 5:38 the load-bearing main spar should be located at Thirty percent of chord. a spar made of CF is Heavier than one made of poplar or pine. 6:52 aileron configuration is WRONG. ailerons should be 'cut out of' trailing edge of the completed wing/airfoil. 6:57 E PROPELLERs should be used. 7:12 elevon control horn NOT correctly configured. 7:25 still wrong. sources of thrust should Not be located so far outboard.! that outboard-located mass is Reducing roll-axis stability. 16:04 'small field' yeah, right lol.

Hi, thanks for additional information but keep in mind that it’s just a simple Plane made to demonstrate Arduplane capabilities. So the additional weight of carbon beam or drone propellers don't really matter, this plane was not made to be super efficient. Also the motors are mounted so far outboard on purpose, the goal was to take advantage of differential thrust and gain yaw control without a rudder. The roll stability is not a problem in this case as the plane has active stabilization.

​@@BasementCreationsChannel and therin in the difference. Your plane is designed sub par, so it NEEDS electronic stabilization to even fly. If the model is designed properly taking into account aerodynamics, weight, balance and other factors considered properly, it will fly better than that model without any electronic stabilization at all.
