This video sold me on the 1/2" sifter. After spending "hours" sifting dirt and back breaking pain, I think this will be worth it. It will save time, and money. and really the price is worth what it would cost me in parts and time to build one myself. I can't wait for it to get here.

Thank you for the details on the sifter. You persuaded me to take a closer look. It is well built and a big time saver over the old screen in a frame that I had used for years. The quality of the workmanship is excellent, with solid fasteners and ample glue. It is lightweight but sturdy and therefore easy to carry around to different projects. It is well designed and operates smoothly. Cheryl is such a joy to work with: responsive, generous and kind in all my dealings. It is very satisfying to deal with someone who has integrity.

I was looking for an easy and inexpensive way to sift and wound up using a Dollar Store plastic basket to sift a couple gallons of rocky soil. Then I realized I could use a milk crate to sift my compost!

Wow self dumping part surprised me that's really nice!

No spray paint but The base is made with Non-toxic furniture grade PVC material that is ultra-strong and UV-resistant🌱

Seen a couple of DIYs for this type of tumbler for less... if you have time for it. They used 1/2 inch screen for the cylinder and put a 1/4 inch liner on the inside if a smaller sieve was desired.

I have look at so many sifters over the past few months and nothing got my attention as the one above, demoed by Mlgardener, made/inventor by Cheryl. I am a big home gardener and raise my on worm bins 5 total at this time.I was surprise when I call Cheryl direct list line and got the inventor of the rolling sifter on my first try. What a personality, she took the time to ask about my needs and recommended the size and offer to add the screens to fit my multiple jobs I plan to use the units for, just awesome! I get making money but that is overpriced for what it is. This could be made easily with some wire mesh, a 5 gallon bucket and some PVC pipe and fittings.

For sure can not be made for under $60 of material. Not including tools and labor. Good news I lowered price for audience. Shipping also is pricey due to the large box coming fully assembled!

Now having said all that i'm seriously considering getting the worm casting version just so i dont have to make it! have a large batch of verimicompost about to be ready and not lookin forward to sifting with my last method. Thanks for this video. I am cheap, so I will make my own out of some wire spools I have sitting around, since I have three loads from chip drop that I need to move. Going to spread the fine stuff into the grass in the front yard.

I use a 4x4 screen attached to 2x4 on all 4 sides and put on top of my wheel barrow and pile the compost on top and use my hands to move it around. What does not drop down in the wheel barrow i put in a bucket and through back in when finished. Make sure you get screen with holes small enough that the grubs don't fall through. Wear good strong gloves.

I came across this when I was looking for a soil sieve. My soil has a lot of rocks so whenever I backfill after planting ornamentals I use a milk crate to get rid of them. Recognizing this is not intended for soil, I had the same thought about the size of the openings mentioned in the video.

Interesting, I will have to study this... i tried to make one out of 5 gallon buckets from a video i seen, but it just didn't seem to be big enough for a shovel full compost to get in. I was thinking of trying again with a 55 gallon barrel... lol

My dad built something like this but larger n def not mobile. This was a great portable option

Hey i know its been a cpl years but how is the sifter still holding up? i just started my worm and garden journey and still tryin to get all my ducks ina row :)

I saw something very similar to this that separates rocks from the soil or compost. He had a lot of pebbles and little rocks and it took him a while but he had some nice clean soil when he was done. Then he would rake peoples lawns for the grass clippings and the leaves for his garden/compost pile. It didn't look nearly as nice, but it sure worked well.

It looks like the OD of the hoop on the open end bears directly on the frame (no rolling elements). In that case, sooner or latter it will wear out at the contact points. Is that correct or am I missing something? I'd also like to know if it is rated for weight. If so, what is the limit?

A way to deal with screen size is ... Make the main thing in half inch screen mesh, and make a slip in smaller screen mesh to put inside the barrel.

If I used that it would break. Mine is 2 ten speed rims with 1/4 inch hardware cloth between them. I cut the spokes out so that it is supported equally in 3 places with enough room to put a big shovel full through. Then I sewed the hardware cloth with the wire that was used to hold the role together. That same wire was also used to attach it to the rims. The material goes in one side and out the other. I built a frame to go from front to back on a construction sized wheel barrow and made to stay positioned on it. That one you got is good for small jobs. The only downside to using a trummel is the sifted material can get flung out of the wheel barrow from the spinning. You almost have to have a skirt around it to make the rogue siftings fall where you want them.

@@francysgardening6913 Composting is so easy, when I first started I took an old garbage can you know the round ones and I cut the center out of the bottom of the can leaving about 5 inches in from the edge, after the can is full Be sure to water your pile as you go After about 15 days I will pull it up and off put it next to the pile that was in the can and then put everything back in , I put the lid on the bottom which is now the top you can compost anything if it came from the earth it can go back to the earth and there's no trick so many inches of Brown and so many inches of green. You can just throw a bunch of stuff in a corner and stack it up or you can contain it with walls of your choosing wire fencing or pallets. Now what you need to do is alternate materials grass trimmings leaves kitchen scraps you don't want to make them too tick in fact if you can mix 'em up before you throw 'em in that's even better, now this time of year it's going to decompose slowly and during spring summer it will go fast. Good luck have fun watching it rot

@@francysgardening6913 One thing I neglected to suggest is to try to keep all your pieces down to three inches or less it decomposes faster and try not to put any dog or cat waste in the pile, if you can get your hands on rabbit manure that is the very very best to add

What a cool take on a compost sifters. Are those rivets to hold the mesh together? Im guessing the metal on both ends is custom made by someone. I suppose you could take a long thin flat piece of metal, put a v bend, then bend it into a circle, cut excess and weld... Id like to go for a larger drum size and have it engine powered to rollers on the bottom

Hang on Luke, I just watched a video of you saying not to sift the compost🤔 granted it was two years ago but now. Confused. I finally made beautiful black rich compost but there are still things in it not broken down. So is it better to sift? Or not to sift? That is my question. Love all your advice.

It depends what you are using it for. In terms of making your own seed starter it is very important to sift, but if you are amending your beds it is not necessary to sift the compost. In containers I usually sift anyways, because I love the look of uniform sifted compost. As for the bigger pieces I just put it back in the compost for further breakdown.

@@jayhansen8196 works great. just have to let the dirt/compost dry a bit to make it work better, I built a sun kiln out of a 55 gallon drum, painted black with a recycled triple track window on the top. gets 140 in the sun.

Anyone know of any other sifters on the market in US? Everything I see is all UK

We just stapled hardware cloth to a wood frame and slanted it then tossed compost or soil on it. Took stones out if the soil too. Lot cheaper and the unwanted fell off the bottom of the frame.

Totally just ordered one!! So excited about this thing!!

I definitely didn't know these were made, I have one those home made sifters. Thank you definitely will now get me one.

I am looking at another of your videos from 2 yrs ago, while watching this video, that’s title is “Why you shouldn’t sift your compost”. I’m confused....

I've seen this on marks channel but I'd rather have one just a little more capacity. A little larger around not length. Coming from Australia the shipping maybe not be cost effective.

That is awesome. To rich for my blood though. I do have a grandson that likes to build contraptions. Hmmmm.

A company made something similar to this over about 10 years ago and I used it to sift out my worms so the worms casting fell out through the screen and the worms came out the end put the worms until you knew food and start over but the worm eggs fell through one loss benefit but there’s so many eggs

I have that jacket, too! I think in the long run you might not be happy with that product. Loading it by the shovel will eventually be a chore, particularly if you are transferring bagged substrate to the barrel

How would you suggest to do it that would work well?

I don't really see the point in sifting past anything big enough to take out by hand. Just put the lumps in. The soil needs the texture and it is slow release organic matter that will feed the soil over time.
