This Prison Is Nicer Than Most Student Accommodation | Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons | Netflix

Ойын-сауық

Greenland's prison in the snow (Ny Anstalt) houses 48 of the country’s most dangerous people, with criminals ranging from murderers, armed burglars and drug traffickers. But it’s also one of the most luxurious facilities in the world. Should prisons be designed for reform or punishment?
Raphael Rowe, who spent years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit in the UK, volunteers to go behind bars in Greenland and experience it for himself.
The documentary series, INSIDE THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST PRISONS, Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.

@@KaneshaDi It couldn't work in the US, simply because of the country's culture and underlying societal issues. Little people commit crimes for no reason - low income in the US, lack of welfare programs, high cost of living, etc, all mean that for those at the bottom, it's hard to get a foothold and keep afloat in society. Private prisons in the US, whose only real job is to employ essentially slave labour, do nothing to help people escape those issues, which simply means offenders are usually pushed into reoffending. It's possible in the US, but not without major societal reform and a change in culture.

You seem to be misunderstanding something, Greenland is still under the Danish kingdom, and many of them are educated in Denmark, likewise partially Danish heritage. What you are looking at is what a modern prison looks like in all Nordic countries. The difference here is that it's newly built, hence it looking like a luxury hotel, because of modern architecture. A lot of prisons in Denmark are designed by the principal of the panopticon, because they were originally designed in the 1800s. Likewise, a lot of modern prisons in many other countries are still designed by the panopticon principal, because they aren't designed by modern Nordic standards.

In such countries, you can only be homeless, if you personally choose to do so... You don´t have to get in prison, if you are trying to avoid homelessness... You simply go to the state, and they help as good as one can... Homeless are only the crazy ones, who cannot stand living in a house, and prefer the street, or the ones with such an extreme consciousness of freedom, that also don´t like living in houses..

My facility is direct supervison which means I spend my entire shift locked in the housing unit, thats 8 to 16 hours. The fact that the inmates have a kitchen with knives, pots and pans boggles my mind. In america our criminals are in class of thier own. I've seen many inmates stabbed cut jumped right infront of me they did not care if an officer was right there either. I see some in the comments praising this system, until you have work in a correctional setting its naieve to think this would work. I got retired medically from an inmate attack and the attacks happen for no reason other then he had a history of extreme violent behavior including murders. At the end of the day what my instructors told us is" an inmate is an inmate"

Then there's the side where you consider that these people are still human and some of them can in fact be saved. Punishing them isn't always the way, but it's really dependant on the person. I think this prison takes that fine line a bit too far though, you shouldn't be THIS comfortable in prison.

I think nordic countries using prison systems like this to rehabilitate is a really good idea because i feel like their culture as a whole is more receptive to rehabilitation. however, this would never work in the US or even Canada

Keep in mind this video's title is a bit clickbaity. It's not for serious offenders like rapists or cold-blooded killers. It's mostly for violent but nonlethal prisoners, like people who've punched a guard - or hardcore criminals who were in deep like drug dealers, smugglers or gang members. Hannibal Lecter would not be imprisoned here; Jesse Pinkman would be.

  • @tessalynn3431

Nonlethal? One of the prisoners here, Kali, beat a man with his bare hands until he died and threw him off a roof. It was senseless murder. He had an awful childhood and I can tell he's remorseful for it, but still... the fact remains that if a man did that in America he would be treated like an animal in prison.

@@tessalynn3431 if a man shoplifted and pinched a police officer in America they would be treated like an animal there is no difference xD the Scandinavian prison system is more lenient and nice the guards are mostly your pal not your warden, the most lethal prisoners that have a high chance of fucking someone up is kept a little more secure.

Well ill be damned, I think maximum security prisons are just hotles... here in US it's the same thing you get ur own room with TV and a bed and food etc, whole in regular prisons let's say u get caught with a drug, ur in there with rapest, killers, etc. I'm so damn confused.

so bad. "toughest prisons in the world" and they go to finland, sweden and norway, i mean those are 5 star hotels and rarely any murders inside prison. one finnish prisoner said "if you're a sex offender against children you'll gonna get knocked the fuck out" i mean, anywhere else you wouldn't say anything and you will know that its capital punishment rather than a friendly beating. such a bad program.
