This Porsche 930 Turbo Is A Widowmaker
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
“We’ve had Porsches in our family for decades…my father’s had a billion of them, I think,” says the owner. “But my very first memory [of this car], and my fondest one, is when I put the keys in the ignition and drove it out of my uncle’s garage.”
The story of how this 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo ended up with its current owner isn’t typical, but speaks to the bond between enthusiasts. “My uncle was really ill at the time, unfortunately…Yeah, he was going to die, basically…and he rang me up [from] the hospital and said, ‘Look, wondering if you want my car…”
From that ending, a new beginning: the owner’s young son, is now able to bond with his father over their shared love for the Turbo. The younger owner will need some training, though: these cars aren’t for the faint of heart. Only 21 of these were brought into Australia in 1978, but many haven’t survived.
“A lot of people bought these cars…and didn’t come home,” the owner says, “…these cars ended up around poles, ended up around trees, ended up upside-down…and, the technology isn’t in the car to cope with the amount of horsepower, really.”
It’s all worth, it, though, as long as this cherished family car lives into the future.
“You look at the car and you don’t think, ‘Oh gee, it looks old’…” he says. “What you see is a piece of history that will never be repeated.”

Pretty ironic isn't it? A car labelled as 'the widowmaker' is keeping the memory of his grandfather alive. The best kind of irony.

My Dad had a 930, Guards Red bought in 1995 and sold in 2011 in Perth, ex Singapore, ex UK. The first time I got to drive it alone was something that will stay with me forever. I had driven hard on track in a G50 964, had a nice MX-5 for the rest but the 930 was just something else that will never, ever, ever be replicated.

+Supercar Advocates It is awesome that there is such a thing, but honestly, I prefer stuff that you can actually use. - 'Use' in a meaningful 2016-everyday-sense of the word... and I am like that regarding most things. In that, I'd probably want 10-15 other Porsches before wanting this... so I am happy for him to have one, and happy to see one, but I don't actually want one.

What an absolut beauty. And there coldn't be a better owner for it !

Stunning in white....
930 is the most beautiful car ever made. The feeling with the turbo lag is fantastic. Never ever sell it!! I ovned a 997 for a couple of years ago. I really really miss it.
That 'moment' we first turn the key ... and hear our Porsche come to life for the first time ... A memory etched; forever in our mind. A wonderful ; truly relatable clip. Thanks for sharing....
Great work on the camera, and the story is a joy to watch, thanks.
Sublime photography and music.
Outstanding, beautiful, imaginative short film about life... and a Porsche 930 Turbo. Well done.
A wonderful owner of a wonderful 930. Cheers mate!
As he said: it’s just a Porsche. No more words needed.
Good father and son bonding time over a porsche. I like the fact that dad is totally ok with son helping washing the porsche like it was just a regular car. Not one of those a-hole dad who would beat his son if he got too close to his car and might scratch it. Thumbs up to this dad!
it's always nice to see an aussie driver with their car. DEFINITELY MORE AUSSIE CARS!
Cinematography in your videos is top notch but what really makes me fall in love with these videos are the stories and connections these people have with the vehicles! Thanks for another flawless episode
My grandpa used to own one of these in a beautiful grey color, but one time while raining he lost the rear because of the turbo kick and ended up hitting a tree with the back of the car, the car wasnt badly damaged and it got repaired, but after that he got scared of it and ended up selling it. Then he bought a 928, which I drive every time I can :D

beautiful car. luckiest man alive to have one.
the cinematography in this video was absolutely brilliant. And that car, my god.. This must be my favorite Petrolicious video so far, although there have been incredible ones before, like the Lotus Esprit video recently.
These videos are priceless. The Turbo was loved/hated/respected/feared and the reason wasn't the amount of power it had, but the long, long pause after you put your foot to the floor before the sledgehammer hit you from behind. Just when you thought you knew how to cope with that it caught you by surprise and you wound up somewhere where you hadn't planned on going and where you didn't belong. The rear-engine oversteering combined with the significant turbo-lag was, or could be fatal. It was relatively new technology and it wasn't really mature. The Audi Quattro was a bit different. People got themselves into serious trouble (or ended their existence) driving that car, not because the technology was difficult to deal with, but because drivers thought there were no limits. All-wheel drive in a fast, light car was completely new territory and the possibilities it offered were nearly unlimited...but only "nearly."
Love that crackling and whooshing turbo sound
Absolutely Perfect. We need more cars like these to be noticed by people.. Some just don't appreciate what should be appreciated

I love a car with a story behind it. He better keep it forever and pass it down to his son / nephew.
Some good footage around Dee Why (Northern Sydney) and a really good story about the bond that a car can have in the family and be passed down to the next generation.
930 is my fav era 911.
This is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Amazing look.
It's like I just watched a good indie film.
I miss my 911S from -74... It was in no ways perfect, not by a long shot. But I loved it, and I hate myself for selling it.
beautiful just beautiful
seriously its just incredible how those beautiful cars always match the owners. Love that chanel...
Not just another Porsche owner but a 930 custodian.
perfect parenting
What an absolutely lovely film. The 930 is the “brutal widow maker” - but for this family it is something completely different. It is the essence of classic Porsche: a totally involving car that needs respect. This guy loves and respects it. Great car and great film about it.
I have a 1972, nicely restored and maintained. 930 turbo fender flare look (all steel metal) equipped with a 3.2. I keep it without a turbo because with the light body it really pulls on high rpm and you can feel every second of it breathing. The point is, with these classic Porsche. It’s not just a car, it becomes a part of you.
Dad has a 1978 911... not a turbo, but wow, what an incredible drive.
The 930 is just FUCKING STUNNING!!

Just so beautiful,beautiful.
Cars like that stay with you for a lifetime.
Those 10 years will be gone before you realize it so enjoy them..
I remember as a child (way back), I had an old Hot Wheels toy car. One day, I picked it up and stared at it, as it was my favorite one. I loved the shape of it, and I flipped it upside down to see what it was and it read in tiny letters "Porsche 911". Ever since that day I dreamed of owning one. Many years later I fulfilled that dream, and even now, I sometimes sit in the garage and stare at that beautiful piece of machinery in awe. My son has the same Porsche fever and he absolutely can't wait to drive it one day!
I could watch videos of old 911s all day long
Awesome story mate. It's great to hear that the value you put on it is not about the $ value, but how much enjoyment it brings to you and your family. My 911 is not as iconic as your Turbo, but its all about the Porsche driving experience that no one understands until they drive one.
Wow great sunset footage!

Your uncle seamed to be a legend! RIP!
What a beautiful car , video and story.
what a beauty and as always beautifully shot . I think I'd buy a Petrolicious box set , perhaps this could branch to Netflix as a series
Dream car of mine for a long time, Porsche name has always been stuck in my head, the old school body design, turbo, manual transmission! It’s just perfect all around. I’ll take this over a Ferrari and Lamborghini anyday!!!!
definitely keep that in the family... your boy will be the next custodian and he will love it.
Thank you Mr Shakespeare for having & showing the appropriate reverence & the generosity to share a few kms of this gorgeous piece of Deutsche engineering with us (exhaust 3:30) just iconic, I'm glad Ur boy gets the guidence the next driver owner needs, the right foot can be seductive & terminal for car & driver, Elvis must find perfect home even if it's a museum, Thanks for gift of a gander into Ur Gem.👍
Enjoy yourself Elvis my boy...you are a fortunate young man - God Bless
Best sports car ever with wonderful proportions .....🥰✌️👍👍
Waau you are so lucky. Luck never found me, however I recently I stumbled across a barn find, a fiber glass 89 wide body 911 whale tail. Somebody started converting it, using a vw kombi gearbox but abandoned the project some 20 years ago. At 59 years of age, I don't know if I would live to see the end result, but I know that God has a very good sense of humor. This story will continue like all Porsche stories do. Even if one of my sons would be able to complete the project, it would make me smile down from paradise!. .
What a cool Dad and what a beautiful story. You’re preserving a true piece of automotive history and also named your son Elvis. Much respect and appreciation to you for your respect and appreciation of what you’ve been given. I’m glad to have found this story.

i actually teared up a bit watching this because when i was around his sons age my dad had a 911 turbo that he took me on drives with. my father loved that car more than he loved me! haha that was 15 years ago and the car has long been sold but i will never forget it and when ever my dad and i see an old porsche he always tells me his biggest mistake was selling that car...
