Lol Makes perfect sense tho, he’s a rookie who started in the G-league and got very few minutes upon getting called up. The award that went to the hardest worker, best encourager, contributed to locker room culture, on time, on task, promoting hard work to make teammates better, unselfish in what’s best for the team even if they have to sacrifice their own position or stats. That kind of award would be awesome!

    There’s no way to track flopping besides watching every single play leading to a foul this season and making a judgement call. That being said this is Jalen Brunsons award. Woulda gone to Embiid had he played enough to qualify, but Brunson is the 2nd most infuriating player for me to watch because every time he drives to the rim he flicks his head back or flails his arms like he just got punched in the face. Then they show the replay and he’s not even touched. It’s so bad that if you watch the Knicks games, watch whenever Brunson drives. The refs ignore it half the time because he does it almost every possession.

    The "2nd half turnaround" award goes to Jalen Green. He was so bad that I straight up dropped him from my fantasy league when it seemed like he was actually falling out of the rotation, only to then instantly regret it when it all fell into place for him after the All-Star Break. The "Phantom Superstar" award goes to Jamal Murray. He's beyond underrated, he might as well be invisible when people talk about the best players in the league. Yet when he and Jokic completely dissect defenses and win game after game, no one even mentions it. Its almost like it takes the fun out of it for some people to talk about a team which is clearly better than all the rest in terms of chemistry and skill set, but I'd be surprised if they didn't win another chip this season, and I believe that when it happens, no one will be surprised that it did.

    People talk about Murray a lot. In fact, he’s probably the most famous nba player who hasn’t been an all star before. People consistently rank him and Jokic as the best duo in the league, and people consistently give Jamal credit and have for 2 years now. It’s like how people say players are underrated. 99/100 people say players are underrated only AFTER they begin to get the credit they deserve and when they finally stop being underrated. Like people said Ant and Hali were underrated early this year. They both were locks for the all star game, who tf is underrating them rn 😂

  • @SeanGrantstormpinball

    @SeanGrantstormpinball

    @@eliyarrows2456 I just Googled top point guards going into this season, and 2 different sources had Murray at 10th. One placed him in tier 3, with Harden and Trae Young in Tier 2. I'd place him much higher and easily take him over both of those guys. I think his value comes from things that don't show up in the box score, and that he can dominate the pace of the game and makes everyone around him better with his brilliant decision making. He also is a great clutch shooter. He might not be flashy, but he does help his team with the most important stat: wins. I agree with what you say about how people label some guys as underrated just to be trendy, and its safe when they say it, because the players in question, liked the ones that you named are already achieving a high level of success. My point was that I think Jamal Murray is Tier 1, and I don't think that a lot of other people do, because he doesn't put up gaudy stats like SGA, Doncic or Curry.

    The shot quality metric is standardized from 1-100. That means that the best shooter will, by definition, get a shot quality of 100.0. That’s downright impressive. Especially since the next best doesn’t even break 90. But saying Steph got a score of 100.0 only means he was the best. It doesn’t mean he was perfect. It means he is the standard everyone else falls short of.

    I think a straight “best play of the year” award should be a thing. I know that people already sort of have this, but it’s mostly the flashy stuff, like Ant’s dunk. No, it would be tough, but we should find the most effective possession by an entire team, rating based on combined spacing, passing efficiency, number of possible shot attempts and their quality, and probability of said play working again on any other similarly knowledgeable opposing team. I know there are millions, if not billions of plays each year, and this would the most painful metric to keep track of, but I think this would be extremely helpful to people who really study the game of basketball as a whole.

    Assuming that the shot quality metric is serious at all, the reason for Steph’s landslide victory might be that his unique shot form allows him to put up shots that the algorithm thinks are highly contested, but Steph actually knew with certainty he could get off. His release is so fluid and so fast that almost nobody can time the contest. And he practices shooting from awkward, off-balance positions too.

    I think that’s stupid. Luka isn’t the mvp this year because he showed he’ll put up 33-9-9 regardless of if the team around him is good or not. And what I mean by that is they stunk for more than half the year and y’all just ignore that, and defense was a big issue which Luka is a problem on. Oh yeah, Luka lead the league in turnovers by almost a whole turnover and he lead the league in usage rate by a huge margin. His stats are more brute force than a sign of winning basketball. Meanwhile Jokic is putting up 27-12-9, has his team fighting for the top seed all year, keeps the ship afloat during injuries, all that. imo, Jokic’s season is WAYYY more fitting of MVP players, and Lukas is more “I’m gonna get mine no matter what, and maybe we win the game” I also think their late season turnaround is more due to Kyrie playing better and their new players than it is Luka who is putting up the same 33-9-9 that he was when they stunk. But thanks for coming to my Ted talk. I just don’t see why we should give an award to a dude just because his stats are pretty in consecutive years, because in that time his team is .500 so is he really the mvp to his team?
