This Peruvian Man is Suing an Energy Company Over Climate Change (HBO)
VICE News’ Arielle Duhaime-Ross travels to the Peruvian Andes where, for the first time, a single individual is suing a company over the effects of climate change.
In this case, Saúl Luciano Lliuya, a local mountain guide in the Andean town of Huaraz, claims that one of the most prolific greenhouse gas emitters in the world, the German company RWE, is partially responsible for the glacial melt which might cause a nearby lake to overflow and destroy his house.

He is actually kinda right, it's a pitty that Vice didn't include the current situation in my country but, right now, climate change is causing an enormous amount of damage to property
Maybe this can one day impact big companies to stop pollution out of fear they might get sued
perfect timing for this video to be uploaded because ironically just two days ago peru suffered some of the most violent and massive floods caused by heavy rain storms, the storms are being caused by a warming of the surface waters in the Pacific Ocean and are expected to continue for another two weeks, with the disaster affecting more than half the nation .The Peruvian Government said that 374 people were killed in 1998 during a similar period of massive rains and flooding blamed on the El Nino climate pattern... so far the death toll is 72 people .
Dear Saul luciano we are milions suporting you! Cher Saul luciano nous sommes des milions pour toi. Courage!
This is amazing. I helped organize youth that sued the City of LA against environmental racism, and violation of CA Environmental quality act in exempting oil drilling projects. We ended up chaining oil drilling app. process in LA. Oil companies are ruthless and actually counter sued the youth for fighting for their rights! These oil companies are owned out of state, and source of the health and climate impacts. Sending all the positivity to this man!

Misinformation concerning the Climate Crisis is actively promoted by the Fossil Fuel Industries -- they are quite prepared to see the Collapse of Industrial Civilisation just to make some more money. It is sad to see those who have been so effectively brainwashed into Global Warming denial that they do not even realise it themselves -- they repeat the latest Lies as they proceed to their own destruction.
My people. Peru where you at!
Does Saúl have a GoFundMe account?
Glaciers are melting world-wide. There are similar problems in Switzerland. Europe has had 5 "500 year heatwave summers" in the last 15 years. Summers like this should only occur about every 500 years, yet there have been 5 such summers recently. It appears that 2019 will be the 6th such heatwave summer. This is baking Europe with crop failures, and trees dying.
Yo who else thought the thumbnail was Papa John?
the lawyers accent is kinda British no?
We should all sue all the big companies lol
They can put filters on smokestacks.
Everyone has to sue the energy companies. The people can win.
A massive flood all over Peruvian coast just happened this week. And it is: El Niño + Climate change .
If one case wins, it leaves open for many more. This won't go foward
After they made this Video, his house had been flooded.
Playing fast and loose with with the word "causes." hahahhahahaha
You got me fucked up 0.5%.
"if they take our tax, they bare our burden"..nL
If you want to sue the polluters look in the mirror. Animal agriculture is the largest greenhouse gas emitter. By consuming animal products you are literally paying for climate change.
soo, why didnt they sue a company in 1941? lol
how can he afford this?

Non profit organizations from Germany are helping him
Then move bruh?!? Swaggy p meme
Ofcourse this is ridiculous but only to this Peruvian man. But, that does not mean that it doesn't hold water. He is correct that there are major dangers but since the danger isn't immediate there isn't much that anyone can do. Set up a Go Fund Me page I guess. As far as I know people have raised more than $20K on that website before.
Problem is the lake last burst in 1941 when there was no significant climate warming

I see their point, but this is just a dumb publicity stunt doomed to failure, obviously
That's like if I live in a shitty neighborhood and sue a black guy nearby before he's done anything just because I "know" he's gonna rob me eventually lol

Uhhh dont think so, our justice system is shit.
Knowing that a flood will occur over the same area as a previous one affected, one would think that the government would do something but it doesn't happen. Instead of blaming a company for a future preventable catastrophe, he should be going with all the research to the corresponding authorities.
I wonder how much this guy spent on a lawyer and other related costs when he could have spent a few hours online reading environmental law and case precedents and found that winning his case was a fantasy.

AGFuzzyPancake plot twist: He actually wins, and this has a domino effect where other big corporations get sued and the earth is saved.
first comment what do i win
God damn it, why aren't they in a flute band?! This is the reason why climate change is getting worse.
To those who downvote just because "liberal propaganda". I think that you actually contributing to vice by doing that and your voice is not heard nor does no one care. stop watching or dislike if the quality/production value is bad of a video not for you personal political standpoint, that's not how youtube nor voting work.

Soooooo who was to blame in 1941 when the same glacier melted and flooded the area? I doubt this man and his lawyer will see any money from that company. thats like me suing Hershey's today for diabetes i might get in the future for eating candy bars.
anyone else hate this narrators voice? so cringy. makes me flinch every time the video first starts
We've only been keeping detailed histories of weather for only a century or so. How long do these same people claim the earth has been around? How do they know weather like this has never happened? They don't
@Hedgpig
7 жыл бұрын
What the weather has been like in the past is ancillary. What's important is that: the greenhouse effect is very well understood; greenhouse gases like CO2 are produced by humans faster than the Earth can get rid of it; therefore greenhouse gas emissions make the planet hotter. At it's core, it really is as simple as 1 + 1 = 2

All these people who actually believe that climate change is 100% man made and due to modernity should start living like the Amish - when they do I will start to believe that they aren't merely virtue-signaling.

You dont know shit about the damage these big corps do to our environment, search for La Oroya, Peru and you"ll see how mining can destroy a town. Many people in small mining towns in Peru suffer from respiratory issues caused by the emissions of the furnaces of the refineries. Big foreign corps do shit in this country and they dont want to take the charges for what they do.
