This Peruvian Man is Suing an Energy Company Over Climate Change (HBO)

VICE News’ Arielle Duhaime-Ross travels to the Peruvian Andes where, for the first time, a single individual is suing a company over the effects of climate change.
In this case, Saúl Luciano Lliuya, a local mountain guide in the Andean town of Huaraz, claims that one of the most prolific greenhouse gas emitters in the world, the German company RWE, is partially responsible for the glacial melt which might cause a nearby lake to overflow and destroy his house.

    perfect timing for this video to be uploaded because ironically just two days ago peru suffered some of the most violent and massive floods caused by heavy rain storms, the storms are being caused by a warming of the surface waters in the Pacific Ocean and are expected to continue for another two weeks, with the disaster affecting more than half the nation .The Peruvian Government said that 374 people were killed in 1998 during a similar period of massive rains and flooding blamed on the El Nino climate pattern... so far the death toll is 72 people .

    This is amazing. I helped organize youth that sued the City of LA against environmental racism, and violation of CA Environmental quality act in exempting oil drilling projects. We ended up chaining oil drilling app. process in LA. Oil companies are ruthless and actually counter sued the youth for fighting for their rights! These oil companies are owned out of state, and source of the health and climate impacts. Sending all the positivity to this man!

    Misinformation concerning the Climate Crisis is actively promoted by the Fossil Fuel Industries -- they are quite prepared to see the Collapse of Industrial Civilisation just to make some more money. It is sad to see those who have been so effectively brainwashed into Global Warming denial that they do not even realise it themselves -- they repeat the latest Lies as they proceed to their own destruction.

    Glaciers are melting world-wide. There are similar problems in Switzerland. Europe has had 5 "500 year heatwave summers" in the last 15 years. Summers like this should only occur about every 500 years, yet there have been 5 such summers recently. It appears that 2019 will be the 6th such heatwave summer. This is baking Europe with crop failures, and trees dying.

    Ofcourse this is ridiculous but only to this Peruvian man. But, that does not mean that it doesn't hold water. He is correct that there are major dangers but since the danger isn't immediate there isn't much that anyone can do. Set up a Go Fund Me page I guess. As far as I know people have raised more than $20K on that website before.

    Knowing that a flood will occur over the same area as a previous one affected, one would think that the government would do something but it doesn't happen. Instead of blaming a company for a future preventable catastrophe, he should be going with all the research to the corresponding authorities.

    We've only been keeping detailed histories of weather for only a century or so. How long do these same people claim the earth has been around? How do they know weather like this has never happened? They don't

  • @Hedgpig

    @Hedgpig

    7 жыл бұрын

    What the weather has been like in the past is ancillary. What's important is that: the greenhouse effect is very well understood; greenhouse gases like CO2 are produced by humans faster than the Earth can get rid of it; therefore greenhouse gas emissions make the planet hotter. At it's core, it really is as simple as 1 + 1 = 2

    You dont know shit about the damage these big corps do to our environment, search for La Oroya, Peru and you"ll see how mining can destroy a town. Many people in small mining towns in Peru suffer from respiratory issues caused by the emissions of the furnaces of the refineries. Big foreign corps do shit in this country and they dont want to take the charges for what they do.
