She wrote this song about her grandfather who lived through one of the bloodiest battles in WWII. He never talked about but her dad and brother researched it. She saw that his story was what COVID workers were going through. Hits me in the gut. I'm an RN/NP.

Thanks for the shout out to health care workers. I’m a RN who worked through Covid and I hope we never ever have to go through that again. You should see the video that someone put together to this song. So powerful!!!! I can’t hardly listen to this song without crying!!!!😢

People who haven't heard Taylor sing with just a guitar or piano accompaniment haven't really heard her sing. She is considered a good singer with a vocal range of A2 - E6 (3 octaves 6 notes ). It was D3- G5 (2 octaves 3 notes) when she started, but she since matured and has trained extensively. However, her octave range is just part of her vocal skill. Her ability to speak passion, sorrow, joy, pain and more into her songs gives them an emotional depth and presence that comes across to the listener in sound and emotion. Your ears hear it, your heart feels it. Taylor is amazing.

“Only 20 minutes to sleep but you dream of some epiphany; just one single glimpse of relief to make some sense of what you’ve seen” may be the most haunting and beautiful line I’ve ever heard, even though overall this isn’t my favorite song of hers sonically. In the midst of so much trauma and pain, all you want is for it to be for some reason, for it to have a meaning, and the visual of dreaming of that meaning in the scant moments of rest you have is just chilling. Love the reactions!

I don't know if anyone's told you yet but Taylor separates her songs by the different implements she imagines having used when she writes them. So there are three categories of Taylor's songs and they are 1) ballpoint pen songs (ie: Ready For It, Blank Space etc) which she says a lot of her songs are written with & are often hard hitting and/or emotionally heavy songs, 2) glitter gel pen songs (ie: Shake It Off, 22 etc) & are pretty self explanatory and quill (Epiphany, Ivy etc) which fans like to say are her emotional songs that make people have to get out a dictionary or thesaurus!😂 Welcome to the TS universe of Quill written songs!❤

Aaron Dressner's studio in upstate NY called Long Pond Studio. They recorded Folklore in separate studios around the country and released it in July 2020. In August they came together at Long Pond Studio (after quarantining for 2 weeks) and talked about each song. It's a documentary of Folklore. Swiftie MADE!

No, you're not wrong. Folklore is an incredible album but this song does NOT get the recognition that it deserves, for so many reasons. Her ability to write with the voice of soldiers on the frontline during war between nations and being healthcare workers on the frontline during the war against COVID, with all having to watcg death after death after death, DESPITE not actually directly experiencing either role speaks to her incredible empathy for others.

Thank you for your service 🙏. My family was lucky enough to shelter in place and keep working and schooling during Covid. But we saw you all on TV… your sacrifice, putting your own family at risk for trying to save lives… your utter heartbreak when losing a patient. Our heart broke for you all. So we stayed home like y’all asked. It was the least we could freaking do. You are a hero ❤

This is a studio called the long pond studio and aron dessner (one of the producers playing) owns it. The long pond sessions is a documentary where they film all the songs and explain the background. Since this album was originally recorded during the pandemic, it was the forst time they got to record it in the same room together

That’s the Long Pond studio on her property where they (Taylor, Jack and Aaron) all got together to make this album for the first time after they each created their own parts separately in their own studios during Covid. She actually made the 2 full albums during Covid. She/they needed to stay busy because they felt unhealthy due to not working and the studios were closed. So they made their own. That’s why Bon Iver has the bandana on in “Exile”; the camera crew was in his studio. He couldn’t be there at Long Pond because of the full travel ban restrictions. Such a wonderful song. Definitely underrated!!!

Almost. The Long Pond Studio isn't hers: it belongs to Aaron Dessner of The National. He wrote a lot of the music on both albums. It is in upstate NY, in the Hudson Valley (but not right on the river). Taylor doesn't have property upstate; her home in NY is in the city. There are a couple guest rooms above the studio (looks like a converted barn), and a second guest house with more space. The main house will be close; Dessner has had the band there and works with other bands as a music producer.

I see people talking about the hospital workers and any other healthcare provider and that’s amazing but everyone is missing something else. So at the beginning of the song she talks about someone seeing the horrors of war with people telling a soldier it’s just a flesh wound get back in there and fight, someone commenting that someone else is bleeding out. Her grandpa fought in WW2 and relates the horrors of war with the horrors of being a nurse, doctor or med student that those are todays soldiers fighting a never ending war

This song destroyed me in SO MANY ways... I thought of Covid, but you have to remember her mum's had breast cancer (twice I think?) Apparently the first verse is about a grandfather who was in the pacific war... If I remember right(I have a bad memory... so very possibly way off...) But no matter how you interpret the lyrics to this song - covid or personal experiences... It's just a masterpiece. I had this one, Tears, This is Me Trying on repeat for so long. and shed many tears for so many reasons.

It completely changed how I felt about the song; I'd not really vibed with the sound of the song so I'd skipped over it and never really heard the lyrics in their full power. I love it now! I am almost ashamed of that-- I felt the same way about Exile, did not enjoy the echoes in the studio, so I listened a few times and gave up. Long Pond is bae.
