This OG in Local Fish Stores Shares Their Secret to Fish and Planted Tanks

In this video, I had the wonderful pleasure to visit the wonderful shop of Ocean Aquarium, in San Francisco, CA. This shop is located in a small and quiet one way street in San Francisco, with a paid garage lot just across the street.
I absolutely adored this local mom pop fish store, and happy to see its tanks full and thriving, to see a mom and pop shop of fish is a rare sight - and incredibly nice people. Operated by Jason and his wife Ari, they take pride in their work and have been operating for more than 35 years, and through the major Earthquake that ran through a lot of San Francisco.
Jason explained to me how he balances his c02 in each of his tanks, and explains to me how his acclimation cup works and why it's so important to acclimate new fish store purchases to your home aquarium.
For those living in the San Francisco Area and passing through, STOP HERE, its an amazing sight to see if you love that, "Experienced True hearted Hobbiest turned into a business that cares" feel.

    Isn't it cool! I believe the store has been at that location since 1996 so there has been a lot of time to collect tanks!

    Nice to see his store still running till now. His is no water change, deep gravels, alot of plants. You can see all his fishs are very healthy. This man is a good idea to ask him any question that you don't know or unsure. I think he know more than anyone of us.

    Would you advise running no water change aquariums like Justin does or is something that is really unique to his shop and location?

  • @fishegirl

    @fishegirl

    2 ай бұрын

    Hello! This is a great question! Yes I always advise water changes! I like to think of water changes as beneficial annnnndddd It may initially seem like Justin doesn’t do water changes at his store, and relies heavily on his plants; however in actuality, this store sells many fish and plants, where each sale takes a small portion of the tank water and in turn, reducing the water volume over time(apart from evaporation). This is a form of water changing that we don’t really experience at home unless we too are selling fish or moving fish from one tank to another. So… technically he is still performing water changes, just not in the same fashion as many home aquarists taking 15-30% of their tank volume at one time :)

    Those are passive CO2 containers. The drink bottles that is.He let's in CO2 via a hose and it dissolves naturally into the water. It's a low budget effective way to do it.

    @@littlematt293 that’s super cool that the UK places them in tanks with other fish; unfortunately some stores are still pretty basic and rocking the old fashioned Betts cups here in the US, however some stores are definately moving up in the betts displays as the years go on and the hobby expands :)
