This is my favorite fish store as well. He really cares for the fish. He won't sell you one unless you bring in a H2O sample and the parameters are on par. Justin explained to me that he is not in the business to get rich but just to do the right thing and appreciate life in all forms. I no longer do water changes either after his counseling. Ask him anything you want, he is a wealth of information. I walked out wishing I had written everything down, I know i missed a few things. My tank is the healthiest its ever been. Thank you Justin!

I’ve purchased all my fish from them and they always include a drop acclimation kit when I buy fish. That’s just how much they care about the well-being of them. the ONLY problem with that store is 9 times out of 10 when a fish is purchased from a store, it’s going to a better home in a tank more suitable and with better care but coming from this store 11 times out of 10 its going into a somewhat of a step down. like im a moderate fish keeper with 6 tanks and couldnt provide anything close to this and keep it clean....let alone all the crappy people who buy fish on a whim or keep 6 inch fish in 10 gallon tanks etc. its hard to beat what he has going on, he should just become an aquarium and charge admission and call it a day lol

What’s also cool about this style of planted tank with the wild crazy growth look is that you don’t have to be some expert aquascaper , or you don’t have to spend hours trimming and getting the look just right to mimic some sort of above ground countryside, you just let the plants go crazy and grow. That to me looks more “natural” than some of the fancy nature aquariums out there.

But the reason i ask, well each time i go into Petsmart, pet Kingdom pet shop,.. it really smells foul odor. Now thinking about it perhaps it has something to do with them having dogs, cats, snake, gerbals, exotic animals that probably poor cleaning habits.

I have a lot to say about "overgrown" planted tanks but nowhere to say it, so I'll write it here. I hope you don't mind! I'm sharing my experience with an experimental tank like this because I know I would love to read about it from someone else. I think there's something special about extremely overgrown planted aquariums that makes animals thrive. It could be that the plants consume all the waste and provide ample oxygen and bacteria/algae for fish to graze on (surface area). I have an experimental 1-gallon desktop aquarium that looks like a salad bowl and has only large-ish rocks as substrate but houses seven Endlers, six adult cherry shrimp, and 23+ bladder snails (all the organisms are breeding), a large ramshorn snail that hitchhiked in as a baby, and some detritus worms that I never see unless I disturb the filter. It's wayyy overstocked by conventional standards, but I have been keeping a close eye on everyone with a 10-gallon handy (I've moved offspring to it) if there's an ammonia spike (there has never been one), and my water quality is perfect. Everyone in the tank looks healthier than the fish in my under-stocked, less-planted 10-gallon, and they're constantly breeding. I'm choosing to keep this many animals in the tank (I move out the babies) because I notice the plants grow faster when there's more animals and when I don't change the water too frequently. I suspect that the waste degradation of an aquarium like this is in perfect equilibrium with the rate of waste production. I'm a biochemist by trade, so I think a lot about metabolism and equilibrium and don't like to use "mushy" words, but I would have to say that this style of tank demonstrates harmony perfectly. It is, though, only a few months old, so I'll have to see how it ages; that is the intention of the experiment after all. I think it is notable that this tiny aquarium never went through a "cycle." When I started the aquarium, I committed a huge no-no and put a fuzzy, brown (lots of things growing on it) rock from a local lake in the filter, and placed in the aquarium a few plants I had collected from the pond. I did get about 6 cadisfly larvae, but they were easy enough to remove. The tank was actually already stocked with six beautiful Endler's livebearers that were being sold as feeder guppies that I 'rescued' (they can look similar, but luckily I have been obsessed with Endlers for years and correctly identified them). I hope, having heard me out and heard about the success of this tank, you will agree that I did, indeed, rescue them. At first, I changed water every day (30%) in fear of an ammonia spike, but as the tests showed no ammonia whatsoever, I relaxed the water changes to every other day, and then eventually to bi-weekly. At this point, I'm only changing the water to avoid old tank syndrome. The overgrown planted aquarium (where it's so densely planted that the fish barely seem to have any room to swim) is such an oddity that I think it should be reclassified into a new style of aquarium, with different stocking rules. I first decided to experiment with this because I noticed that the Western conventions of what an aquarium should be have long been violated in Asian countries, some of which have been keeping aquarium fish for thousands of years. I didn't follow these conventions, but it did make me feel justified in experimenting. For instance, for the first two months the tank was lit mostly by direct sunlight (though I had to move to a place with no sunny windows after that and switched to a CFL bulb in a desk lamp). I was also influenced by Corey's frequent rebellion against what the Internet says to be fact. I'd like to address the question of behavioral problems that would normally be a concern with overcrowding animals: I have seen a lower-than-average amount of aggression in my fish in this tiny aquarium (not that Endlers are particularly aggressive). I believe this is because each animal can easily escape the line of sight of any other animal if it wants to, and, as all of the livestock are small species, even in one gallon each fish or shrimp has its territory. It may also be that everything is just healthy and happy. The Endlers have improved unbelievably in colour so that they are unrecognizable from the fish I brought home. The cherry shrimp appear to have increased in 'grade' to the extent that two of them look like painted fire reds and the remaining ones look like Sakura grade. They looked like standard cherry shrimp when I got them (though it is true that some of this coloration has come from them growing into adults).

I enjoyed reading your post, I read many years ago in a journal about guppies that lived in one cc of water in syringes confiscated from prisoners in Brazil. I read that 20 years ago and can not find the source, however, in relation to your post I agree the key to thriving fish are plants. I think one of the biggest challenges in larger tanks is STABILITY in the ecosystem in a one-gallon tank it is easy to maintain the homeostasis of the water parameters, and the bioload, once this naturally stabilizes the fish will thrive. While many amateur fish keepers overcrowd, they normally would be doing so in unplanted tanks. Bladder snails are also a super underrated asset in a tiny tank they break down the waste quickly. The Halstead method utilizes plants and creates beautiful ecosystems without filters, heaters, and oxygen pumps. the fact that you take the young fry out shows that you are responsible and the one-gallon now is now essentially a bio orb or a balanced ecosystem. The the tropics it is common the see colonies of livebearers thriving in shallow puddles and ditches, the fact that your Endlers are breeding is proof is balance. I enjoyed your post, keeping writhing, and sharing your observations and don't let anyone question your methods only the outcomes,.

I just bought my first otocinclus from this store 2 days ago and didn't know it was internet-aquarium-famous. When this video started, my first thoughts were, "this store isn't that special, I was just in a store like it!" Then I realized this video was about the store I had just been shopping in. I am not a smart man.

This is my hometown. I visited this place when I was very young but didn't appreciate it since I assumed a proper fish store should like like a squeaky clean department store. Looking at it now, as an older man, I truly appreciate everything that they've done and their DIY approach without the help of KZread. Thanks so much Cory. I will be their newest and most reliable customer from now on (as well as your customer, too, Cory!)

It's good to see that he's just doing this to make a living and not become a multimillionaire. Keep up the great work you are an inspiration to us all. I wish I lived in your town. Oh man this is why I love these videos and these old school shops! That guttering just made me realize how to 'fix' my Roma 240. The tank comes with through-the-bottom piping for the filter, which is a great idea and saves running pipes over the rim and down the back, but they put the inlet and outlet at the same end, right next to each other in the rear-right corner, so the water flow at the other end of the tank is virtually none-existent! I've been scratching my head, thinking about DIY'ing some piping to the other end, but by using guttering under the lid I could easily get the water from the existing outlet to the other end of the tank and simply let the water cascade back in.

Aquarium Co-Op if you have time could you tell me how one would go about setting up that co2 valve system? I don't know enough about valves to know what to search for. It looks as though he has a hand trigger of some sort on the co2 tank that he uses to fill the bottles in the aquariums. What is that trigger valve thingy called?? I am new to co2, although I have always had simple planted tanks. Now I want to up-my-game. Thank you. And thank you for the videos.
