@@1985toyotacamry Exactly, the current Maxima engine is superb in terms of performance but pairing with CVT was the dumbest mistake by Nissan ever! I had it but the reason i got rid of it bcs of CVT. This Maxima deserves MANUAL or DCT not garbage CVT! I really hope Nissan will recover from that mess they did and start making good cars again.

You know a car is well made when you still see them on the road 20 years later. I still see these around. The paint is faded, they have some scratches and dents, but they are still going.

@Rob Basque ya even we had a 2011 micra and it was ok on the road then we got a 2015 showroom one and it is as rough as anything and there's tons of vibration in the car especially the floor and it's very noisy engine it's like it was made for a 6 not 5 speed

I have a 2002 Altima SE with basically the same drivetrain as the Maxima in the video except I have the 3.5L engine. Still running great after 240k. Everything is original under the hood except for one fuel injector and the fuel rail pressure regulator.

I owned a 99 Maxima sold it with 159k on it. Drove it from Denver, CO to San Francisco It was climbing the mountains as if driving on the flat land. Impressive car

Agreed. The 90s Maximas with a 5 speed manual were sweet indeed. Just got a 96 SE a little over a month ago. She hasn't been treated the best but I'm in the process of putting her back to rights. The guy who sold it to me told me his mechanic said that it needed a water pump and the No. 5 injector replaced and his wife didn't want to put the money into it so they sold it to me for $600.

@@matthewwach7693 you're gonna have fun with that. I did the 5 speed swap about 10 years ago to one of my many maximas along with the plastic intake manifold from the 2000-2001 models. Did a 3.5 swap later on and till this day is probably my favorite project.

It makes me cry when I watch this video. Nissan used to be my favorite company.

*Someone forgot about the 1 million mile Nissan Frontier with 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual that's all original.*

I bought my 1996 nissan maxima GLE with 87,000 miles on it while still a senior in high school. I'm 35 now, it now has over 237,000 miles. Original transmission and engine still going strong, not a single electrical issue, AC still blows cold. Haven't had to do anything other than an alternator and starter, and of course keeping up with engine oil, transmission oil, brake fluid, steering fluid, coolant, spark plugs, etc. This car will probably outlast me!

Renault company makes very good and reliable cars. They sell very well in Asia, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. But Americans won't find out how reliable it is unless they give up the old-fashioned V8 engines that consume more than a truck.

When you said good Nissan, I knew it had to be 20+ years old! Those maximas are some great cars, I'd love to find one in good shape with a 5 speed manual!

I had a 1998 Nissan Altima for a few years. I had no trouble with getting to school and back. It was just a nice reliable car .

Still driving the '98 Altima I bought in 2005 with 124K. It now has almost 220K, and it's the second most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Most reliable was an '87 Isuzu pickup!

@@henri6595 I paid $3400 in 2005. At the time, comparable Camrys and Accords were going fior $5000 - $6000 +. I've been 'fixing it up' as my poor-man's 'Maxima sport-sedan' for the past few years. Added 5 factory alloy wheels ($100), a trunk-spoiler ($45 including matching trunk-lid), and upgraded to 2000-01 Altima headlights. Parts from Pick-N-Pull and Ebay. Alloys and spoiler mainly to be rid of the world's ugliest plastic hubcaps and improve the 'droopy-trunk' styling. Most important - the spoiler is visible through the back window as a parking-aid, and provides a level area for boxes and packages while I'm unlocking the rear door!

@@henri6595 this was way back in 2002, my parents go it used and it was there for my brother and I for about 5 years. It ran fine and eventually they sold it off. No problems with it and did the job getting me and brother from point A to B.

I really miss my 4th gen maxima. It was a 96 SE 5 speed manual. Such as amazing car. Comes from the factory with a VLSD differential and was not only very quick (0-60 in 6.6 sec, 1/4mile in the mid-low 15's stock) but was reliable and super practical. All around a great car.

Bring back the Nissan, that built cars for the HUMAN RACE.

When they made great product, they managed their financials poorly. When they got better financial management, their products' quality dropped. But, now with Ghosn gone, hopefully they'll slowly regain those spirits in the 90's

My father use to own a 99’ Nissan Maxima. It was a smooth ride. And when I look back and I see them on the road, those are sweet cars. New maxima looks nice but they started to go bleh. So those 99’ are damn nice rides.

I was looking for a maxima , over here its called a cefiro couple years ago when I’m looking for a car. Heard the engine is smooth like butter and the bells and whistles inside are pretty sweet for a 90s car. Too bad didn’t get one at the end of day because used car dealers are scams and owners either don’t sell theirs or its just in crappy shape

I've got an Renault-based '08 Versa with 214k miles, in spite of losing the heater core, & head gasket leak (i used blu devil) last year, it still starts up every morning

My Dad had a 90s Altima back in the day. I remember him saying it basically needed a tune-up, new plugs and oil change and stuff. I'm not sure how long he ran it like that but I do remember he went a whole winter without doing anything to it and it ran perfectly. Said it was the most reliable car he's ever owned next to his Maxima.

YESSSSS! I have a 95, fully loaded black on black with a standard. I LOVE IT! Best car I've ever owned. This series is super reliable but so underrated. Hopefully, now that will change. It's luxury brother, the Infiniti i30, is equally great, shares same driveline. You don't see these cars for sale often because they're so good.

I had a 96 maxima with a 5 speed. I loved that car!! Sold it at 240000 miles. I won’t hesitate to get another one

@CheezusCrust wouldn't go that far. While they are reliable and you might like them, there isn't as many frontiers on the road as tacomas and that's including all of the newer and older ones. User ratings from the frontiers averages out to a 6.2/10 whereas the Tacoma averages out to a 7.7/10.... 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have a 1992 Toyota corolla sprinter with 4A-GE engine and manual transmission - still runs great .

This came into the shop back in 1999, it had a manual, and it was getting a state inspection. That transmission and car were so smooth and refined.

I had a ‘99 Maxima SE. Great car except for the ignition coils, which were a known weakness. I ended up selling it to get something that could haul more stuff since the Maxima’s seat didn’t fold down.

Your the man Scotty!! I love how you say the A/C blows cold as can be and the thermostat is set a little on the warm side. That says a lot if its blowing cold. I have a nissan maxima 2000 model and man I can really put that car through some real street racing and it doesn't give up. Those engines are amazing!!

Lexton Ravaee ive got a 2000 too with 190k miles. Only thing that has went wrong is the alternator. The OEM alternator when out at 189,000 miles! If that isn’t a testament to Japanese quality, I don’t know what is.

Right away - A32 Maxima came to mind. My dad used to own a 99 Maxima SE, was an awesome little car....

Was still goalie as far as the later 2000 years...Had an 07 Infinity (Nissan) G35 6spd manual for 11 years Sold it last year only because I needed an suv to take my lil one around. Never had a single issue. Extremely reliable. Miss driving it!

My girlfriend's dad bought a '96 Maxima, same generation, back when they were brand new, he eventually passed it down to my girlfriend when she was in college, now I'm driving it today, 25 years later. Still trucking along with 207,246mi on it. Reliable car. Solid engine and auto transmission.

Scotty, you brought back a lot of memories on Datsun/Nissan. My mom owned a '78 Datsun B210 hatchback. It was a small, but very well made car. My mom really liked it. I drove that car around when I was a kid. I remember my grandfather telling me that the car would be in the junkyard in 5 years; it outlived him. I owned an '83 Nissan 720 Pick-up. It was a good truck, and I drove it for 15 years and learned how work on vehicles with that truck. The truck is long gone, but I still have the factory repair manual for it! Now for one better than the Maxima. My wife bought an '89 Nissan Sentra when it was about a year old from a rental car company. She was driving it when I first met her in '92. I have meticulously maintained the car over the last 23 years and she's still driving it. I've changed out some things, but the main things are all original. The car is still going strong. The problem I'm starting to have is that some parts aren't available anymore, things like the air flow sensor. I've offered to buy my wife a Mustang, a Camry, a Lexus, and she just says, "I love my little car." Our mechanic says that it's the best maintained Nissan in our state. It's been a great car, and it was Made in Japan in the glory days. Thanks for the great video and bringing back those great memories of Datsun and Nissan!

I had one of these, got it up to 275,000 miles before I let it go. It still ran perfect when I sold it, just sold it to get something newer. It had great acceleration as well. If it was manual I probably would have kept it.

The 99 Maxima is a perfect example of why I like the older cars. I have my mother's 98 Altima with 58,000 miles on it and it is absolutely dependable and rides well. I did have a 90 and 99 Maxima and after looking at new cars, I wish I still had them.

I've got a 97 Maxima . It was an engine built to handle 500 hp detuned to 200 hp. There are guys on KZread that have turbo charged them to 500+ hp and they hold up. The 99 was the last of that gen. 200 hp was actually pretty good for the years it was made. Very comparable to the upscale BMW 5 series for that time but way more reliable.

@@Proxyyy825 It's funny because you know people wonder how to save money build up a savings etc. Cars like the Panther platforms are exactly how you do that. Buy something that you get once and can still be driving it two decades later. Easy to work on, parts everywhere and cheap. Let the suckers in the new cars that look at you like you're dumb think that they are winning the game with their empty bank accounts from their $600 note.

A friend of mine had on of those in college.... t was so fast.....nice to hear that it is scotty approved....

One of favorite cars I ever had was a 2002 Maxima (Made in Japan) with a six speed manual. That VQ35 engine was bullet proof! The only reason I had to get rid of it was because the body and frame was disintegrating from rust. I live up in Ottawa, ON, Canada so there's no shortage of salt on the roads during winter. Otherwise it was a great car and fun to drive.

The 2001-2002 R34s and S15s are still worthy of buying (in a few years when they're legal, LOL).

Scotty, I had a ‘96 with manual transmission. Loved it, till it was stolen. These days I drive a 2013 Infiniti G37, which you also gave a favorable review of. I will always love that Nissan 6 cylinder. I had it also in my ‘87 Hardbody Heavy Duty

One of my favorite vehicles, that I used to own, was a 1992 Nissan Sentra E coupe. It had a GA16DE engine, a four-speed manual transmission, manual windows, manual locks, no power steering, and steel wheels. I bought it with 85,000 miles on it, and it finally gave out at 481,000 miles.

Ugh I miss the glory days of Nissan. Used to be one of my favorite car brands. These days you couldn't pay me to drive one of those piles of 💩💩

If Nissan was so good in the 90s how come they were on the verge of bankruptcy that Renualt had to step in for a cash infusion ? Fiat and VW, with less quality always have cash to roll in to; their vehicles appeal to emotion. Having quality alone does not seem too profitable unless you are Toyota.

I had an 85 Sentra had a timing belt, then had an 89 Sentra had a timing chain. Sure liked the timing chain better, it didn't break.

Nissan was in so much debt before 2001, and they were building their cars with high quality parts..hence why they last so long. Because they were so close to being bankrupt Renault had to come in and lower production costs, hence quality of the vehicle went down to turn Nissan's profits around, they then started to make millions after Renault took over. Then Customers notice "I used to own a old Nissan and it lasted forever, but the new ones don't!?" Go figure...

@@Pokemonguy16RS Right. The moral of the story is that as much as we complain about quality ... it isn't actually profitable. I am from Europe and Fiats have always been bottom of the barrel rust buckets and yet they always have money somehow.

Their Nissan Titan is good and honestly the only good thing that Nissan makes other than of course the old Frontier. 370z, and Gt-r but those are good only because they were created pre-Renault. Honestly they should really make the new Frontier good and reliable like the Titan while also being competitive against other mid-size pickup trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado etc. It is crucial for them to be doing good in at least the midsize pickup range. Because the Titan is such a flop that I don’t see it getting a new generation sadly.

Really miss my 95 Maxima SE best car I ever owned 380k on it when it got totaled. Timing chain tensioner, water pump and fuel injectors where the only things changed on the motor. The trans was rebuilt once and normal maintenance. Even had automatic climate control and heated seats. Everything still worked after 20 years. Awesome car

Barely see these left in Cleveland. I wanted one when I was younger.

Yeah the automatics last about 150k. I have 255k on the car. I’ve replaced alternator, starter, distributor plugs and wires, and transmission in the 19 years I’ve owned it.

Had the same car coupe version. Transmission was terrible. I believe all accords up till 2004 had bad transmission problems

Who would win a race? 1998 Honda Accord V6, 1997 Nissan Maxima V6 or a Toyota Camry V6? 🤨

My first car was a 2003 maxima. But in the middle east and Australia they were re badged infinite I30. It is actually the exact same car with different body panels. Even the interior was identical to the maxima. The engine was one of the best and the smoothest V6 engines I've ever driven. It was so smooth that you don't realize how fast you were going. I sold to my friend and he totalled it after only 8 hours. He didn't feel how fast he was going on a rainy day and wrapped it around a light pole.

Yes!! My first car was a 1997 (same model) Nissan Maxima GLE. My parents got it for me in High School. I looooooved that car. It was luxury and sporty!

I had a '93 Maxima "4 Door Sports Car". The car just wouldn't die. Pretty much so traded it in on Penske Truck rental when I moved cross-country.

Hey Scotty just picked up a Nissan Altima . With the VC turbo engine ... I only got because you speak so well about Nissan. I almost got a Camry but I noticed half a dozen senior citizens taking test drives And told myself I don't want to be driving in a Grandma car

Hes right, I've seen MANY of these 4th gens surpass 400K miles! My 97 had 300K when I sold it, AC still even worked! People were dumbasses for scrapping these!

I had one of these and it was great!

Daughter had a '99 Maxima for a good while. She had to have the muffler replaced twice (it's at the back of the car). She drove the wheels off of that car. She got married and wanted something bigger. Her Maxima was a good car. Loved that V-6 engine. Close relative of the Z-car engine, I understood.

Many cars have the muffler in a forward position under the car. They run hotter and are less prone to acidic condensation and last longer as a result. When mufflers are at the rear of the car they run cooler and are more prone to acidic condensation and will fail more often. Ask Scotty.

I miss the good old days when cars weren't disposable commodities.

Actually owned one. A Manual. Loved taking my siblings to church in it straight up. I have driven the Avalon lately. Found a great place to reserve one.
