Here is the demo to "This Never Happened Before," recorded sometime around 2007 or 2008 by Brandi Burkhardt and Rob Evan. Written for the musical "Bonnie & Clyde," Frank Wildhorn supplied the music, while Don Black supplied the lyrics.
Though cut from the final musical, "This Never Happened Before" was in the score during the world premiere production at the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California in 2009. The song was also included as a bonus track on the original Broadway cast album.
Though featuring Burkhardt and Evan, it's possible a demo featuring Michael Lanning and Linda Eder exists, as Jeff Calhoun mentions in an interview for the La Jolla Playhouse (conducted around the time of the musical's premiere) that it was the first song Wildhorn and Black wrote for the original song-cycle, and the first song he played for book writer Ivan Menchell.
Though beginning life as a part of the ill-fated "Romantics" project for Atlantic Records, "Bonnie & Clyde" was almost instantly picked out by Wildhorn and Black for further development.
The two soon began working with screenwriter David Newman (who had co-written the screenplay to the acclaimed 1967 film "Bonnie & Clyde") and director Michael Greif to further develop the work into a full musical. Upon Newman's death in 2003, the project was shelved.
Years later, while looking for a show to do together, Wildhorn gave director Jeff Calhoun the original demo to "The Romantics" song-cycle, who immediately jumped on-board to direct, enlisting writer Ivan Menchell to write the book.
