Honestly, probably a choice of take what you can get, they're still both pretty "new" on the acting scene. I mean I know Jordan has been on Broadway but still, I have a feeling most executives don't care about that 😒 and I know Chloe was in The Hate U Give, but considering her character in that movie maybe it's somewhat effecting her hiring prospects??? Like no one wants to get type casted as racist girl, and its still early in her career where that could happen, getting type casted in a certain role

Same! Dancing is something really special for me. I feel that in this movie they didn't really showed how beautiful and special dancing can be. It was also very unfair how the this team won when they've been practicing dance for like 2 month and the other team has rhythm, good coreography, good music, and has been dancing for years. Like, rhythm and discipline can't be fully achieved in two months girl!!

I hate movies like this, and their are so many of them. We have the villain who is someone who has trained in this performing art for years and is maybe a touch arrogant because of it. But like, they have confidence in their skillset, it's not unearned. And because they're not the nicest about how the lead doesn't have performance training that makes them the villain. Like in High School musical, everything about the film wants us to think Sharpe is the villain and the drama teacher is unforgivingly rigid but that's just how it is. Sharpe changes the audition day to make Gabrella and Troy have to choose between their other passion (football and science club) and acting. A bit bitchy yes but that's kind of how theater productions are, if you don't have the time to devote to them, you shouldn't be participating. And what do they do instead, set off a lab explosion, and hack school property. On top of which they were late to the audition, in theater my teacher always said "If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. If you're late, you're in trouble." You don't get to just flounce in and out whenever you like. Gabrella and Troy definitely had the talent for a secondary role but they had no commitment and the movie wants us to think Sharpe is the bad guy for fearing their lack of care for the play would end up ruining the production in the long run.

So yeah, missing limbs & co dance team ftw

I honestly hated the part where the Indian girl started dancing, I’m Indian my self and do classical dances. I absolutely hated how horribly they represented it. I also really hated how bad they danced, yet the still won the competition. Like I have been dancing for 3-4 years and I’m still not as good as the pink haired dude, ignoring the fact that the dance styles are completely different. The side character and the Indian girl were some of my least liked characters. I liked the pink haired dude more out of everyone, he was a bit of an exaggerated asshole, but he had a better personality then the stale ass main character and the side character with a personality of a rock.

Imagine starting dance somewhere between 3-8 years old, working to land a spot on your school's dance team, making sure you eat right, exercise and stretch regularly, learning how to balance your workload with 20+ hours of dance class a week, spending weekends and vacations at your studio for extra practice, paying for your shoes and costumes, putting all this work and effort into something you really love, and then this random girl shows up who's never danced before like "let me join the team."

6:55 That’s actually a thing .Most dancers can tell if someone is a dancer by the way they stand, you can even tell type. Ballet dancers have their backs super straight and stand with feet slightly turned out (and will sometimes walk toe-heel instead of heel-toe which is the bigger giveaway). Contemporary/Jazz dancers stand with their feet a little wider apart than the average person (and also have the super straight backs). Hip hop and urban style dancers tend to have their knees slightly bent. I got nothing for tap or ballroom honestly other than maybe an uncanny ability to move in heels. Every dance style has a neutral position and dancers tend to stand in the neutral position even outside the class Also Americans tend to stand with their weight more on one leg than than the other and most dancers don’t do that.

This movie makes me feel weird , im a cheerleader/gimnast, I train 8 hours a week in hope to become better and I just feel like , if a random girl came and said "I want to be on the team" and got rejected because she doesn't have the physical qualities or has put some hard work to be at least able to learn and antagonize me because they aren't able to make it and they lied about it , I don't owe them anything , less when I have to work out for hours , eat healthy etc and they think I owe them anything It just feels weird , idk , dance , like any other "sport" is about training and polishing your abilities little by little and that this girl , out of no where came and won over that experienced dancers Worst of the case , that 'dance' they did is so-so , just some simple tricks and the judges are impressed suddenly , no way

Re: cultural appropriation *Disclaimer: I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know the full context. But from what I have gathered from that one scene, this is my take on it.* *Disclaimer #2: I do **_not_** speak for my entire ethnicity.* IMO, Priya teaching the other dance troupe members about whatever form of Indian classical dance she learns isn't cultural appropriation. I learn bharatanatyam, and whenever people see videos of pictures of what bharatanatyam looks like, they always dismiss it as "weird" at best; usually, they straight up make fun of it. So to see other people learning bharatanatyam (or whatever Indian classical dance) in _Work It_ without malicious intent or any sense of irony - it makes me extremely happy since it's a mainstream movie where people aren't mocking the dance. To see that small glimpse of respect to another dance form on a mainstream Netflix movie - it makes me feel good about learning bharatanatyam. So really, I have no issue with it. That Indian classical dance representation is definitely more respectful and just...better than what people actually say about Indian dances in the real world. I'd even go so far as to say that is an example of cultural _appreciation_ as the people learning that Indian classical dance are appreciating it, and the people learning it aren't being offensive or making cruel remarks or trying to "own" the dance. Rather, that scene is just some representation for fellow Indian classical dancers and what they learn; it's showcasing a new aspect of a new culture in a positive light. Edit: just saw that scene again, and while most of my stances don't change, I think the other dancers wearing kurtas as well is a little weird. Not that they can't, they absolutely can, it just seems slightly off to me

is wearing another culture’s clothing considered appropriation if you grew up with it? i never know how to approach this topic since i haven’t met a lot of people who relate. i’ve lived in a lot of places in my 19 years of life. i was born in india, lived here for a few years, and came back almost two years ago. i’ve wanted this ethnic long jacket i saw in a shop for quite some time now, it’s so so gorgeous and elegant and the black-red combination is just 🤌🏻 but i didn’t think it would be weird for others (namely europeans, i do live in france now) to see me, a central asian, wearing it? is it weird?

@@ajmerinder No, not at all! Personally, I'm glad you're embracing Indian culture, makes me feel appreciated, LOL! But for real, as long as you're respectful about it and not, like, claiming it as your own while simultaneously dismissing Indians for wearing stuff like that, then you're good! And if anyone in Europe tells you that's cultural appropriation, show them this thread! Hope you have fun with the jacket :) Although I wasn't expecting actual people in the film to wear kurtas - I think I thought it was weird because I wasn't expecting that, not because it was actual cultural appropriation. I was just shocked

Wasted potential. I was thinking the exact same thing about the disabled street dancers. Jordan Fischer could find his redemption arc by coaching them and getting a lesson on how lucky he was about still having all his limbs. It would have made for a more compelling, inspiring story. I think he'd have more chemistry with Liza. And people need to stop using the white savior trope already it's not funny anymore 🙄 That said, funny video! 😂

I agree about the wasted potential but not sure about the arc or him seeing how much worse he could have it. It's a massive trope to use disabled characters to show the abled (or in this case injured) character how much worse they could have it and somehow put their life into perspective, which suggests 1 that the disabled individuals life must be awful, which most of the time it isn't and a lot of the struggles of disability come from lack of care, access, treatment from others ect and 2 that the abled individual thinks that being disabled would be absolutely awful and unimaginable and they are so lucky, I'm sure I'm missing lots of points but basically it creates a very ableist view that to be "able" is better and to be "disabled" is obviously worse and not something you want or would be able to deal with ect. This isn't a dig at you at allll btw just saying it's a trope that often comes up and does a lot of harm.

@@user-uc3zz5my4o But if you write it so that Jordan was the one who was miserable and bitter and seeing how these disabled people are actually happy DESPITE their disability would be a nice turn, right? Especially when he finds that the nature of happiness is not the things you don't have or lost but what you can make of the things you have at the present. It all depends if you write it to invoke pity or evoke inspiration, I think. 🤔

Opinion from a semi-professional dance student (semi-professional as in, I don’t do competitions or major productions, however I am qualified and physically able.): What they did for their final ‘dance number’ (I wouldn’t even call it that) isn’t any type of Dance, it is what we call ‘Primary School dance’ as in The dances that they teach an entire class of Primary School students how to do. Simple, no coordination, nothing. The tricks? I would align them more with Kids playing around on a trampoline than actual hard work. Moral: As a dancer, this movie is garbage, and I hate the choreographer with everything

As someone who was part of a dance club in uni and often collaborated with other dance clubs I say, the "you can't dance and be smart is such a dumb trope. We had a a bunch of medicine students in salsa soc committee, plus nurse who danced like a queen, even though she could only make it to half of the classes because of rotation. My flatmate was president of ballet soccer and part of contemporary society, and she graduated with first in English Lit. The president of hip hop was a really cool dude who was doing a MA in Business... Like, dancing is good exercise and it's fun. Even if you're practicing every day for two hours (which I've never seen anyone do), you've still got time to get other things done. There's no reason dancing as a hobby would interfere with your studies.
