The notorious death cap mushroom causes poisonings and deaths around the world. If you were to eat these unassuming greenish mushrooms by mistake, you wouldn’t know your liver is in trouble until several hours later. The death cap has been spreading across California. Can scientists find a way to stop it?

Where do death cap mushrooms grow?
In California, they grow mainly under coast live oaks. They have also been found under pines, and in Yosemite Valley under black oaks.
Why do death caps grow under trees?
As many fungi do, death cap mushrooms live off of trees, in what’s called a mycorrhizal relationship. They send filaments deep down to the trees’ roots, where they attach to the very thin root tips. The fungi absorb sugars from the trees and give them nutrients in exchange.
Where do California’s death cap mushrooms come from?
Biologist Anne Pringle, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, has done research that shows that death caps likely snuck into California from Europe attached to the roots of imported plants, as early as 1938.
How deadly are death cap mushrooms?
Between 2010 and 2015, five people died in California and 57 became sick after eating the unassuming greenish mushrooms, according to the California Poison Control System. One mushroom cap is enough to kill a human being, and they’re also poisonous to dogs. Death caps are believed to be the number one cause of fatal mushroom poisonings worldwide.
What happens if you eat a death cap mushroom?
A toxin in the mushroom destroys your liver cells. Dr. Kent Olson, co-medical director of the San Francisco Division of the California Poison Control System, said that for the first six to 12 hours after they eat the mushroom, victims of the death cap feel fine. During that time, a toxin in the mushroom is quietly injuring their liver cells. Patients then develop severe abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. “They can become very rapidly dehydrated from the fluid losses,” said Olson. Dehydration can cause kidney failure, which compounds the damage to the liver. For the most severe cases, the only way to save the patient is a liver transplant.

Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. @@chezmoi42 This is true. It's not a responsibility I'd be happy to accept. I live in France and spend a lot of time photographing mushrooms. I am yet to go out and not find a species I've not seen before. The other difficulty lay in how much they change in their short lives. With around 3000 different types in France alone, the best you can hope for is a knowledge of the ones most common to your area.

@@snicker576 When foraging for mushrooms, it's important not only to be able identify edible ones, but to be keenly aware of hazardous lookalikes. Some mushrooms are much more beginner friendly than others, having either very distinctive identifiable features, or no toxic lookalikes. Oyster mushrooms, for instance, are incredibly easy to identify and so can be safely harvested by novice foragers with little cause for concern. On the other hand, anything even remotely resembling something like a death cap should be left well alone, even for experienced mushroom pickers. While there are some edible, tasty mushrooms that can look similar death caps, destroying angels, etc., even the most experienced and educated mushroom pickers will usually leave them be because they simply aren't worth the risk, no matter how confident they are with their ID. Even puffball mushrooms - a delicious species widley considered to be one of the easiest to identify - can sometimes be confused with young destroying angels (a similarly toxic relative to the death cap), and should always be cut open to confirm their ID before consumption. I'm curious as to how experienced the lady featured in this video actually is, because identifying - and knowing not to pick anything that resembles - amanitas (the family to which death caps belong) is very much required knowledge to anyone even thinking about foraging for edible mushrooms.

There's a rule of thumb I've heard that mushrooms that grow on lawns are usually safe but ,usually, isn't certain enough. I guess you look for oak trees in vicinity but they can attach to other tree roots. Example the Saffron milkcaps are supposedly around pine trees but I've seen them growing around tea trees ,, not the camillia tea species but the Australian tea tree . Seen the fairytale mushroom too around tea trees but often without the red and white dots but some still with dots .

You'd be very surprised at what's around you that's toxic or poisonous. They've been there forever. It's really no big deal unless you forage or have a kid that puts whatever's growing in their mouths or animal without the self preservation instinct. The first thing you should do when foraging is find all the poisonous look alikes, and put some time into it. I don't know how many times I've read something had no toxic look alikes or is easy to distinguish just to find out later that it wasn't the case. Most plants have some kind of a forgiveness period, but not mushrooms. Apparently almost all mushrooms are not severely toxic but the ones that are make up for all the rest. Whereas plants have many toxic members but not many as sneaky and deadly as the few deadly mushrooms.

as was already pointed out, mushrooms are no plants. funnily enough, plants can be even more dangerous as mushrooms. every mushroom, even death caps, can be touched and licked without harm. but there are some poisonous plants that cannot be touched. the toxicity of wild plants often gets underestimated, while the dangers of mushrooms are painted in the scariest shades... it's like everything else: you have to know what you're doing. if you don't, you should not do it.

I doubt we will ever "master" space travel. The astronomical scales we are talking about are basically impossible to travel by means of modern technology and human biology. It would take hundreds of generations to get to a certain point if not thousands. Creating self sufficient space vessels that would last hundreds of generations is an incredible challenge in itself, not to mention the fact that humans are not built to survive in zero gravity. We lose eyesight after prolonged times in such an environment. Not only that but babies would be born with irreversible deformities that would probably significantly shorten their lifespan. Assuming the challenge of zero gravity is overcome, even the speed of light wouldn't be nearly enough to allow us to travel at a reasonable rate. So yeah, we are basically stuck here. That's also why we will never meet aliens.

Pff, you obviously don't know of Terrance McKenna haha ;). Man was bold, wise and most certainly familiar with the specific magic of mushrooms. I have a little theory about them, I don't believe it, but I believe it possible if you know what I mean (I'm nowhere near certain of this, but consider it a viable explanation, if you do not know what I mean), and this isn't entirely my thing, but based on personal experience (I have not learned all I can from these strange creatures) and others interpretation, I think so called Magic Mushrooms might somehow temporarily plugs you into some fungal intelligence, perhaps extra galactic. Sounds pretty out there, but consider we split from fungi quite some time ago (they digest internally, we externally, that is the big difference, plus the 'farm' other organisms over their cell thick structures to give them food, shelter, and even medicines), but they were among the first things on land, and their processes, largely the release of things like oxilac acid (I might have spelt that weird, too lazy to check), into the ground broke down rocks into the first stage of what would become soil, readying the planet for plant life. So, perhaps this was some odd and ultimately random and beneficial (at least from humanities vantage point) mutation, or, perhaps there was some rough plan in place before, as I am convinced life did not start spontaneously, but was rather constructed and perhaps assumed control of (at least partially) from some force exterior, basically life pushes from the outside in, where the Will and Intelligence to manipulate the physical world come from, that I have little explanation for, its much like you must understand many scientific and mathematical concepts to properly wrap your head around physics, we don't know if life DOES push from the outside inward, and if it does, much must be uncovered before we could understand the forces shaping these things, but I do believe they exist, perhaps it is like the Russian matryoshka dolls, a never ending quest to uncover smaller and ever more complex designs, but I think there is likely 'bedrock' somewhere, some set of ultimate, incorruptible laws that govern at least this universe.

Mr Wink This mindset comes from the "getting back to our ancestor's roots/nature." My father, who grew up picking mushrooms and berries in Siberia's forests, reminisces about that "magical" time. Mushroom picking is especially prevelant in Russian/Slavic culture, appearing in all forms of Culture and culture. I do not trust mother nature enough not to trick me into dying; so I'll stick to grocery stores and farmer's markers thankyouverymuch.

Two stories about mushrooms. Around 1964, my family lived out in the country with trees and grassy fields. An old bohemian man around 78, yes that was old back then, was sneaking around the yard, hiding behind trees, and glancing nervously towards the house. He finally noticed my mother viewing him back through a window, then quickly left the property. A couple of days later he came back and apologized for stealing mushrooms. We made it clear he could come back anytime and harvest all the mushrooms he wanted. Years later I developed and interest in foraging for mushrooms. Knowing many mushrooms are poisonous, I purchased an identification book. I looked at the pictures that showed various examples of one being a delicasy and another, looking similar, deadly! I considered this as a risky proposition, BUT never the less, being brave, I ventured out to forage mushrooms,,,,,,,,,, in the grocery store.

As someone often using mushrooms from the forest, I have a hard time understanding how people get themselves into these situations. I mean: * Everybody should know that eating the wrong mushrooms can be fatal. -> So... take steps to ensure it doesn't happen. * It's not hard to learn to recognize a small selection of perfectly safe and delicious mushrooms where there's basically no chance for mistakes. * So STICK TO THOSE! ... don't go plucking mushrooms looking like this, since even if you don't end up with a "Death cap" there are plenty of similar looking bad mushrooms. It's not for amateurs!

Yet another move to prevent natural selection in humans. And people wonder why society just gets more and more idiotic. Even when people WANT to die, nobody ever lets them. We are a cruel and disgusting joke played at evolution's expense, especially when it comes to the evolution of our own species.

@@mrslinkydragon9910 killing organisms that are only harming humans in the name of "invasive species" is foolish and can harm an ecosystem it's helping, like these trees. also, we're an invasive species mate. and unlike with these mushrooms, killing us would help the majority of ecosystems

@@sphenodon2016 you deserve a kick in the nuts. Invasive species are a leading cause of biodiversity loss.
