CORRECTION, 9/26/2018: This episode of Deep Look contains an error in the scientific name of the house centipede. It is Scutigera coleoptrata, not coleoptera. We regret the error. The viewers who caught the mistake will receive a free Deep Look T-shirt, and our gratitude. Thanks for keeping tabs on us!
Voracious, venomous and hella leggy, house centipedes are masterful predators with a knack for fancy footwork. But not all their legs are made for walking, they put some to work in other surprising ways.
SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! goo.gl/8NwXqt
Recognizable for their striking (some might say, repulsive) starburst-like shape, house centipedes have far fewer than the 100 legs their name suggests. They’re born with a modest eight, a count that grows to 30 as they reach adulthood.
If 30 legs sound like more than one critter really needs - perhaps it is. Over the last 450 million years or so, when centipedes split off from other arthropods, evolution has turned some of those walking limbs into other useful and versatile tools.
When it hunts, for example, the house centipede uses its legs as a rope to restrain prey in a tactic called “lassoing.” The tip of each leg is so finely segmented and flexible that it can coil around its victim to prevent escape.
The centipede’s venom-injecting fangs, called forciples, are also modified legs. Though shorter and thicker than the walking limbs, they are multi-jointed , which makes them far more dexterous than the fangs of insects and spiders, which hinge in only one plane.
Because of this dexterity, the centipede’s forciples not only inject venom, but also hold prey in place while the centipede feeds. Then they take a turn as a grooming tool. The centipede passes its legs through the forciples to clean and lubricate their sensory hairs.
Scientists have long noticed that because of their length and the fact that the centipede holds them aloft when it walks, these back legs give the appearance of a second pair antennae. The house centipede looks like it has two heads.
In evolution, when an animal imitates itself, it’s called automimicry. Automimicry occurs in some fish, birds and butterflies, and usually serves to divert predators.
New research suggests that’s not the whole story with the house centipede. Electron microscopy conducted on the centipede’s legs has revealed as many sensory hairs, or sensilla, on them as on the antennae.
The presence of so many sensory hairs suggest the centipede’s long back legs are not merely dummies used in a defensive ploy, but serve a special function, possibly in mate selection. During courtship, both the male and female house centipede slowly raise and lower their antennae and back legs, followed by mutual tapping and probing.
--- Are house centipedes dangerous?
Though they do have venom, house centipedes don’t typically bite humans.
--- Where do house centipedes live?
House centipedes live anywhere where the humidity hovers around 90 percent. That means the moist places in the house: garages, bathrooms, basements. Sometimes their presence can indicate of a leaky roof or pipe.
--- Do house centipedes have 100 legs?
No. An adult house centipede has 30. Only one group of centipedes, called the soil centipedes, actually have a hundred legs or more.

The first time I saw one I freaked out not knowing what it was and then I tried to kill it and it ran and hid behind a little step stool and completely vanished from existence. The miracle of consciousness is astonishing. Such a small creature, so aware of its body, grooming it carefully. And the antenae allows them to feel their surroundings. I am so amazed at how such tiny creatures have such a developed awareness. Once, in the tropical forest of Guyana, I saw a spider of 1 milimeter length sitting in the middle of its fifteen centimeter wide web, this web was 150 times wider than the spider. It was fascinating to ponder on how much spatial awareness such a little creature had.

They actually hunt and eat spiders. Maybe THAT will help you be less afraid. I have many of these and many spiders on the foundation of my house. The centipedes hide under the vinyl siding with their faces sticking out while they watch the other arthropods. They'll reach out and twitch a spiderweb, imitating prey. The spiders, usually False Widows, run to the source of the vibration. The Centipede engulfs the spider in a heavy blanket of legs. Now that the spider can't move to bite the centipede, the centipede bites the spider. The venom works almost instantly. The centipede then carries the prey to a dark place to eat so it is ´t visible to predators itself.

The only bug welcomed in my home. (Some harmless spiders are tolerated, but not welcomed.) The house centipede is rarely seen, is a voracious predator of other insects, and leaves no discernable nests, junk, or other droppings I have to encounter and clean. They do no damage, eat none of my food, and aren't pests. I see them once in a while, just a reminder that my insect-slaying task force is on duty. Because of them, I encounter far fewer bugs overall. Less roaches and other destructive bugs! They eat roaches, flies, silverfish, bed bugs, and most common house creepy-crawlies. When seen, they're usually out in the open only for a few moments. They flee from humans and are completely harmless. The scenario where one would bite a person is almost impossible with a person actively trying to be bitten, and even then the bite is minor. Other bugs I'll squish or catch and release outside my home. Centipedes I'll actually release in my home, like when they get stuck in the smooth porcelain bathtub I give them a path of toilet paper to climb out of back into the rest of the house. Spiders I find pretty icky. I'll usually tolerate them if I can confirm they're harmless. But they're not as good to have as centipedes. They make webs, are potential biters, and can come into conflict with humans, which with the centipedes, who are always on the move, never happens.

I have ant problems spring and fall and she' helps to stop them before I get overrun by the entire colony. They say they keep away all manner of unwanted (more unwanted than house centipedes) pests like bedbugs, spiders (though spiders are good at pest control too), cockroaches, weevils, etc. Still, she freaks me out every time I open the basement door and see her scurry away.

I am deathly afraid of these things. I also use to be deathly afraid of spiders, killing them if I ever saw them in my home. After watching so many interesting videos on all sorts of bugs/insects/arachnids I've actually learned to like spiders more. As long as they aren't extremely massive like a wolf spider and stay in their corner, I don't mind sharing my home with them. However, if they start to roam they meet their demise. House centipedes on the other hand, no matter how good they are get terminated on site. Whenever I see one I literally start having a panic attack until I kill them.

Creepy, but free pest control. There's a surprising lack of roaches and other invertebrate pests when you have creepy critters like these in your garage. Just make sure other pest predators aren't harmful to you or your loved ones.

@@graham1158 nope, they eat fly, roach, ant, bug and other insect that we considered as pest. They're shy insects that always scram when they saw human. I never killed one of it in my house.

I can't say I've ever been more than thankful for them, aside from that time where I cowered on top of a barstool as a kid, convincing myself it was a trick of the light scurrying under the stove. They're basically canaries for insect infestations, if canaries ate explosive gas until you installed a ventilation system. Additionally, they aren't big on pesticide resistance, so they'll probably be the first victim of any chemical pest control from eating tainted prey. Depending on how you look at it, they just stay around as long as they're needed.

Austin Aldy Something can eat pests while being a pest itself. If roaches ate silverfish, they'd still be a pest. Ants can kill a number of bugs while also cleaning up bits of food on the floor, still don't want them in the house.

Also wolf spiders. They eat earwigs that like to crawl in and hide

I killed it by spraying febreze and covering it with a cup, making sure it stayed in there until the mf died

Don’t kill them though, they kill actual pests. I just trap them in a glass and put them outside. Chances are they come back in but at least I don’t have to see them.

I found one in my condo a couple of days ago. I estimate it was around the length of my finger, but it was surprisingly chill.

I saw one of these twinkle toes centipedes at the bus stop early one morning. It just stared at me while I took a picture of it. I thought it was actually adorable. I nearly missed it because it blended into the pavement so well.
