Daddy Longlegs Risk Life ... and Especially Limb ... to Survive | Deep Look

Ғылым және технология

When predators attack, daddy longlegs deliberately release their limbs to escape. They can drop up to three and still get by just fine.

DEEP LOOK: a new ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe and meet extraordinary new friends. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
We all know it’s not nice to pull the legs off of bugs.
Daddy longlegs don’t wait for that to happen. These arachnids, related to spiders, drop them deliberately. A gentle pinch is enough to trigger an internal system that discharges the leg. Whether it hurts is up for debate, but most scientists think not, given the automatic nature of the defense mechanism.
It’s called autotomy, the voluntary release of a body part.
Two of their appendages have evolved into feelers, which leaves the other six legs for locomotion. Daddy longlegs share this trait with insects, and have what scientists call the “alternate tripod gate,” where three legs touch the ground at any given point.
That elegant stride is initially hard-hit by the loss of a leg. In the daddy longlegs’ case, the lost leg doesn’t grow back.
But they persevere: A daddy longlegs that is one, two, or even three legs short can recover a surprising degree of mobility by learning to walk differently. And given time, the daddy longlegs can regain much of its initial mobility on fewer legs.
Once these adaptations are better understood, they may have applications in the fields of robotics and prosthetic design.
--- Are daddy longlegs a type of spider?
No, though they are arachnids, as spiders are. Daddy longlegs are more closely related to scorpions.
--- How can I tell a daddy longlegs from a spider?
Daddy longlegs have one body segment (like a pea), while spiders have two (like a peanut). Also, you won’t find a daddy longlegs in a web, since they don’t make silk.
--- Can a daddy longlegs bite can kill you?
Daddy longlegs are not venomous. And despite what you’ve heard about their mouths being too small, they could bite you, but they prefer fruit.

No. No it does not. Opiliones are a completely separate group from Araneae. They have a reduced connection between the front and back of the body, as opposed to the spiders' distinct head and abdomen. They do not have venom of any kind. They have only 2 eyes. They lack spinnerets, and their pedipalps are completely reworked. They also have a scent gland, unlike spiders, so they do not, in fact, smell like a spider. If you've ever upset one, you will know the smell I'm talking about.

"Daddy long legs" is the common name for several small long legged species. Which name each individual is known by is dependent on where you're from. The Harvestman (which is the arachnid shown in this video), the cellar spider (which is an actual spider), and also apparently the crane fly and possibly mosquito's in some area's.

I've always loved Daddy Longlegs. They just never gave me the creepy or even scary vibe of some spiders. (I've had many run-ins with Brown Recluse spiders and two with Black Widows though I've never been bit by them.) One autumn a Daddy Longlegs somehow made it into our home and since the missus has similar feelings towards them as I do we just let it wander freely; We called him (or her?) Gus. He must've wandered our main floor for a good two or three months before he stopped showing up and he didn't seem to be at all shy either. Many times we'd find Gus crawling up the leg of our pants or across our laps. He didn't seem to be too keen on crawling across exposed skin, like the back of hands or arms though, as he'd stop every 4th or 5th step to clean his feelers or legs. We figured it was our skin oils.

Considering that by the sounds of it, daddy long legs lose their legs a lot, why haven't they evolved the ability to regenerate limbs?

  • @albertcaanaster1665

    @albertcaanaster1665

Since loosing their legs doesnt affect much their survivability, even if one individual appears that can regenerate his limbs, the preassure from natural selection will be insignificant(it will remain almost the same across the population). Probably 1 percent of tem has that ability or not.

  • @apothecurio

If it doesn’t affect there reproduction rate then they won’t evolve anything new until a mutation occurs that renders all other daddy long less likely to reproduce. regrowth won’t really do that.

Preston Cormick it’s not about paying attention, it’s about a daddy long leg just living it’s life and some human comes along with friggin’ pliers and makes it panic for its life enough to disfigure itself for its whole life. They could have just told us that is it’s defense mechanism, we would have believed them. They didn’t need to hold onto one and make it panic so much to do that for real.

@ Except it wasn't because of a natural predator -- it was for no other reason than to satisfy our curiosity. I'm all for scientific exploration (and not gonna lie -- I HATE spiders), but this was pretty low for humans. We cannot know how painful the sever is. It may be a defense mechanism, but given the problems associated with walking with fewer than 8 legs, I get the feeling daddy long legs are in no rush to lose any of them. Being scratched by my cat is mildly painful. I still don't want to be scratched by my cat though.

You know, usually things capable of autotomy can also regrow lost limbs. Lizards do it with their tails, crabs and lobsters do it with their claws, starfish do it with their... well everything. But I never thought a creature could so nonchalantly lose something they'll never recover. I was under the assumption that longlegs grew their legs back.
