Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Movie Description:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a 2005 musical fantasy film directed by Tim Burton and written by John August, based on the 1964 British novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. The film stars Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket, alongside David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, Noah Taylor, Missi Pyle, James Fox, Deep Roy, and Christopher Lee. The storyline follows Charlie as he wins a contest along with four other children and is led by Wonka on a tour of his chocolate factory.
Development for a second adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory began in 1991, which resulted in Warner Bros. providing the Dahl estate with total artistic control. Prior to Burton's involvement, directors such as Gary Ross, Rob Minkoff, Martin Scorsese, and Tom Shadyac had been involved, while actors Bill Murray, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, Michael Keaton, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Adam Sandler, and many others, were either in discussion with or considered by the studio to play Wonka. Burton immediately brought regular collaborators Depp and Danny Elfman aboard. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory represents the first musical film directed by Burton and the first time since The Nightmare Before Christmas that Elfman contributed to a film score using written songs and his vocals.
Filming took place from June to December 2004 at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom. Rather than using computer-generated environments, Burton primarily used built sets and practical effects, which he claimed was inspired by the book's emphasis on texture. Wonka's Chocolate Room was constructed on the 007 Stage at Pinewood, complete with a faux chocolate waterfall and river. Squirrels were trained from birth for Veruca Salt's elimination. Actor Deep Roy performed each Oompa-Loompa individually rather than one performance duplicated digitally. Burton shot the film simultaneously alongside the stop-motion animated film Corpse Bride, which he also directed.
Willy Wonka-themed chocolate bars were sold, and a Golden Ticket contest was launched as part of the film's marketing campaign. Early plans to promote the film with a Broadway theatre musical were not realized. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory premiered on July 10, 2005, and was released in the United States on July 15 to positive critical reviews, who commended it for its visual appeal and dark tone. It was also a box office success, grossing US$475 million and becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film worldwide in 2005. The film received a nomination for Best Costume Design at the 78th Academy Awards, while Depp was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Musical or Comedy. It remains the highest-grossing film adaptation based on a Roald Dahl novel as well as Tim Burton's second-highest-grossing film to date.

Wow, I See Alot Of Butt Hurt People In These Comments. I Can Understand You Not Liking A Movie Because Of The Writing, Acting, Directing, Or Even The Tone. Everyone Has Their Own Opinions. But To Not Like A Movie Because Your Weird Cultish Self Is Just So Attached To The Original, That You Dont Want To Accept Anything Else. Because You Think You Trashing This One, Or Any Other Remake Is Your Weird Way Of Showing Love And Respect To The Original. That's So Childish. That's Not A Damn Opinion. I Don't Know Whats Up With People And Their Weird Obsession, To Want To Defend Something That Doesn't Even Need To Be Defended. This Is Technically Not Even A Remake, Its So Much Different From The Original And Actually Tries To Translate The Book On To The Screen. That Can Be Considered A Different Movie. Another Point... The Reason For These Remakes Being Made Are To Keep The IPs Alive And Let The Next Generation Experience Them In Their Way And In A Updated Time And Format. But Yall Don't Think About That, Yall So Worried That Original Will Get Burried. When It's Actually The Opposite, Every Time The Remake Comes Out It Gets People Interested In The Original. Especially When Some Of Yall Won't Shut Up Crying About The Original. Yes I Know People Don't Like Cash Grabs And That's Another Reason Why People Will Hate On Reactions. But That Still Hits On My Topic, WHY?! Don't You Have Something More Important To Worry About? Also Just Because It's A Remake Doesn't Mean It's For You! It's For The Next Generation, But Some Of Yall Are So Damn Selfish That Yall Don't Think Of That Either. My Goodness Some People Really Can't Read, My Comment Is Not Up For Interpretation. My Comment Is So Straight And Simple, It Is What It Is. People Bringin Up Other Stuff That has Nothing Do To With What I'm Saying.

Its literally the modern state of movies that people "despise" a remake. Even though this one came out a WHILE ago....People now are still going to hate on it because it "isnt" the original. Its a really stupid thought process. Movies should be good or not. There are plenty of comedies from when i was younger, that I dont like anymore, and vice versa. But just to disown the idea of something STRICTLY for being a remake, is really dumb imo.

"They went ham in this movie with showing just how despicable these kids are." EXACTLY. One of the problems with the original movie is that the other ticket winners weren't really portrayed correctly. They were watered down from the complete psychos they were in the book, to just regular-ass kids who maybe had like one annoying habit. This movie does a much more faithful job of depicting just how awful they were in the book, so that they actually deserve what they get.

Willy Wonka is meant to be a creepy character throughout the tour, because he hasn't interacted with other humans for a very long time, and Johnny Depp perfected that. His facial expressions are great too. And Wonka's that pale compared to his younger self because he hasn't seen the Sun in a long time too. When Wonka passes by the pink sheep in the glass elevator, the reason he says "I don't want to talk about it" is because that is a reference to Ed Wood, another film by Tim Burton that Johnny Depp starred in. And Depp's character in Ed Wood had a fondness for pink angora sweaters. The Smilex toothpaste is another reference to a Tim Burton movie as Smylex was the codename for Joker's poison in the 1989 Batman movie. The soundtrack remains a masterpiece. I mean the decision to make each song a tribute to a different era of music was perfect. Especially for Mike Teavee to show the many things you could watch on TV, but just because you watch TV doesn't mean you know everything, and that TV can be wrong. Also, who wouldn't want to sing about how great your master is while being burned? Elfman's (and Daul for the lyrics) a genius, big respect for him, especially since he had to compose the music for the movie simultaneously with The Corpse Bride

Many chocolate things, such as trees, flowers, et cetera, featured in the movie were created by the chocolate shop Choccywoccydoodah in Brighton, England. The shop displayed and sold some of the creations after the release of this movie. • Charlie's father works at a toothpaste factory which produces Smilex toothpaste. "Smylex" was also the name of the poisonous gas concocted by The Joker in Batman (1989), also directed by Tim Burton. • Forty squirrels were trained for the scene where they pounce upon Veruca Salt (Julia Winter) in the nut-shelling room. • Willy Wonka's colorful cane is filled with Nerds candy, sold under the Willy Wonka brand. • AnnaSophia Robb (Violet Beauregarde) says she received a lot of jaw cramps while chewing her gum. Her dad told her not to smack her gum, but the filmmakers told her otherwise. • These are the buttons seen on the Wonka Glass elevator. Some of the buttons in the Glass elevator include: Incompetent Fools, T-Bone Steak Jell-O, Secretarial Poodles, Cocoa Cats, Mechanical Clouds, Stars in their Pies, Nice Plums, Up And Out, Fragile Eggs, Black Box of Frogs, Weird Lollipops, Mighty Jam Monitor, Creative Dog Flip, Elastic Forest, Leaky Canes, Dessert Island, Pie Cream, Spewed Vegetables, Naffy Taffy, Lickety Split Peas, Honeycombs and Brushes, Old Sneezes and Smells Department, Television Room, Whizzdoodles, Chocolate Lip Rookies, Blackberry Sausages, Yankee Doodles, Orange Egg Flip, Root Beer Goggles, Pastry Room, Heart Shaped Lungs, and Projection Room. • The flashback about Willy Wonka's childhood and his being obliged to wear a huge dental brace are not from the original book. I always felt like this version was judged very harshly; especially since it is not a remake of the Gene Wilder Version like so many claim, it was always meant to be a seperate film, and also something that is very ironic is that people judge it for not being accurate to the Gene Wilder version, yet this film is more accurate to the original book than the Gene Wilder Version ever was, so much so that even Roald Dahl's family felt it was more respectful to his work, wheras Roald Dahl (oddly enough) despised the Gene Wilder version and considered it a travesty just to be clear, this is not saying that people aren't allowed to enjoy the Gene Wilder version, I enjoy that film as well, but I hope my comment will give some perspective to this film's harsh judgement, especially since some of y'all in this comment section are kinda crazy, like I get not liking a film but y'all don't need to be disrespectful to someone who died ok? What Dahls family or he thinks of the adaptation means absolutely nothing, he has a record of being old and bitter about everything to do with his books. Also, a good film stands on it's own and shouldn't need his "family" to justify why people should like this muddy, dead mess of movie. Accuracy has nothing to do with what is or isnt a good film. For the Chocolate Room: Production designer Alex McDowell insisted on having the river look edible. Burton wanted the river to have a real chocolatey feel and not just brown water, so they came up with a faux chocolate concoction, taking months to create a non-toxic edible substance with the right consistency. The final mixture was a mix of water and a thickening agent known as Natrosol, with food dye used to achieve the brown coloring. Wonka's boat took 20 weeks to build and incorporated 54 animatronic Oompa-Loompas, along with its own internal rowing mechanism! For the squirrels: A good number of them were real! In total, there were 40 real squirrels, which were professionally trained by Animal trainer Michael Alexander and his team. They spent a total of 19 weeks training these squirrels for this one scene. The squirrels were trained to sit on stools while they opened shells and dropped them onto a conveyor belt. Originally they wanted to train 100 squirrels, however due to the fact that squirrels can be difficult to handle and unpredictable, they trained 40 and the rest was animated in afterwards.

I do like this one better. I like Wonka’s backstory and the Oompa Loompa guy is so great! In the dance numbers, he actually shot every scene in different spots. Like you would think he would do a dance once and then they could photoshop him into the rest of the scene, especially that Augustus Gloop song. But nope - he would move over to a new mark and do the dance again so it looked slightly different (so it would appear like there really were several Oompa Loompas.) His name is Deep Roy and he worked hard on this, even without having many lines

I've always loved this movie, heck, I've dressed up as Depp's Wonka two years in a row for Halloween when I was a kid! It's true that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is more faithful to the book than the Gene Wilder version. The Prince Pondicherry moment is from the book. In the book, Charlie's father is alive, just like in this movie. And Veruca met her demise after her desire for a squirrel in the book just like in this movie. But the biggest thing from the book that the original Gene Wilder version didn't do is use the lyrics for the Oompa Loompa songs from the book. While Danny Elfman worked on the soundtrack, Daul is credited with the lyrics as all four songs utilize lyrics direct from the book. As for the Oompa Loompas, the actor's name is Deep Roy. Roy had extensive training for the role in dance, yoga, and some minor instrument playing. Tim asked him to play five Oompa Loompas, but five quickly became 165. He said how for example there were 21 of them in a scene and as he acted out each one, they'd bring in professional dancers because he of course couldn't do all 21 at the same time. Deep Roy's dedication in stepping into all 165 roles prompted Burton to call him the "hardest-working man in show biz". The Augustus Gloop song is a Bollywood spectacle because that was Deep's suggestion! And for the vocals, that is Elfman's voice with pitch changes and modulations!

It was figured that Violet's mother would be the type to have a ridiculous face lift.

  • @davidhoffman4641
    @davidhoffman46415 ай бұрын

I much prefer this version to the original. I like the expansions to Wonka's character and really explores how isolation can affect a person, the music and visuals are more creative and unique to me (the original only has three songs, as the Oompa Loompa songs are all the same music with different lyrics, and that's the only reason it's memorable is because of the repetition), it sticks more closely to the book, and involved the family of the original author to honor his work. The original was made only to sell tie-in candy (for real, hence why the original is called Willy Wonka as opposed to Charlie) and shoved out the original author from the process, making him not, understandably, care for that version.

Plus, he won the golden globe for that performance. 😊 28:41 Veruca’s song is my favorite. It has that 60’s Sunshine Pop sound that I like. 💛 One thing, if you noticed, Charlie is the only child that Wonka didn’t refer to as little boy or little girl. He knew how good Charlie was. Maybe that’s why he told Violet he didn’t care about her name. Lol

  • @typo1345

I like this one way better. The old one credited Roald Dahl for a script they scrapped in favor of one they made themselves, they changed all the songs, they changed how Veruca gets taken out. This one had Roald Dahl's wife as a producer and everything went through her, and Danny Elfman stuck to the book lyrics for the songs. You know, like an adaptation SHOULD. I also love the detail of the ring of police officers between the ticket winners and the crowd outside the factory gates. Thats a detail lifted straight out of the book. also, the intro main title theme is actually what got me into music in the first place, now Im in college for music composition for film and game. So i have a huge amount of respect and nostalgia for this movie

Mel, I am also team Tim Burton version as well. Also, the author of the book disowned the original film as well. I actually read the book in the third grade as a class and we watched the film afterwards. I never really cared for either one growing up. It was not until this version came out that got me interested because it was a Tim Burton film. It was a movie that I was able to enjoy watching with my siblings as well. I would much prefer Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka because Gene Wilder seems very offputting, especially when he was screaming at the end. The original had songs that I do not care for while the Tim Burton film songs are really catchy. I could go on and on of my preferences on this version but I understand that the original is very important for the people who grew up with it. It's too bad that many admirers of original films and other nostalgia tend to be too protective and nasty to everyone who dares think differently. If a movie is made well, that is what's really important. If you want an example of a movie where the original is way better than the remake, then look no further than Red Dawn. I also have another film version that I liked better than the original and that is Footloose. The remake came out while I was in high school and I loved the more modernity and music (I loved David Banner's song "Dance the Night Away).

25:48 Mell, let me TELL you, Burton cut out some parts that couldve made it creepy (creepier if you thought it had a creepy vibe already). When the whole world is on its craze for hunting down the golden ticket, there was a scene in the book where a scientist made a machine to detect the slightest bit of gold and grab it to find a ticket, but it went haywire and tried to grab a gold filling from a duchess who was watching the demonstration. All it said about the aftermath was it was an "ugly scene" with the crowd destroying the machine (i shuddered thinking about what went down), but Violet's song had me wondering 'how on earth did this get through the publisher??' The majority of the song is a story of a woman who loved chewing gum so much, she would chew on whatever she had nearby if she didn't have gum, including a pair of boots, the mailman's ear and her boyfriend's nose! (I'm sorry if you're uncomfortable already but that's not where it ends) then one night she goes to bed, putting her gum on a tray but her jaw was so used to the chewing motion, she chewed in her sleep until she bit her tongue in two! 😵😱 i unlocked a new fear that day, and i was an adult when i finally decided to read the book..

i think people need to grow up and understand that producers that want to make a movie based off a book, they're not gonna go BY the book. not every single detail has to be included in the movie. every director and producer has their own spin to their movies, yes the original was great, but what makes ted burtons' willy wonka so good is his spin on it. johnny depps' acting was great. move along people

That shot of Augustus drowning in chocolate in the thumbnail unintentionally makes this look like a horror movie. 😂

The difference in my opinion between Willy wonka and Charlie and the chocolate factory is different levels of imagination from the book. While yes willy wonka was more of a musical experience than more of a CGI. Charlie and the chocolate factory had a different type of music genre for each kid that got booted. Augustus gloop was broadway. Violet was disco. Verucca was 60's/woodstock. Finally Mike was Rock. There were a lot of references to the first one. There's no knowing where they're going. That was gene wilder. I literally got done writing the music genre thing 2 minutes before you said it. Lol

I’m sure someone in your comments already beat me to this, but the actor who played all of the fkn Oompa Loompa’s went to the BANK for this movie. He performed all of his parts in separate takes that were put together to make the final product you see in the movie (rather than just one performance and then CGI’ing the rest of them into place) he did *every single movement* you see, individually, probably over hundreds, if not, thousands of takes.

I think this version is objectively better, but less memorable than the original

I loved both versions, they each had their memorable moments. The songs were most memorable to me and Johnny Depp's face throughout this whole movie was LOL.
