When it gets to the lower level and stops siphoning, is it 100%? If I kept the setup like that would there be any fear of a slow leak into the waste bucket? My thought for my planted freshwater 75g tank is to set up 50g of "clean" water and then use the product to change 10g a week. It sounds like I could set this to change 10g on the same day once a week, and can leave it alone for 5 weeks? I would actually set up the waste water to exit my house and water one of my flower beds with nitrate rich water! Two problems solved with one unit. Can this unit be set up to change weekly or is it daily?

I have been running this system on my 30 gal aio and it has been fantastic. I have a 10 gallon clean saltwater tank and a 5 gallon kalk/top off tank in the stand and a 5 gallon waste bucket that I just empty once a week. The ato doses my kalk probably every 25 minutes and my corals have never looked better. 5/5.

I made my own auto changer for my 100 gallon tank for about 150 dollars. I am on a well so I do not need to let the water sit to gas off the chlorine, it can be pumped right in the tank. It has made my aquarium 10 times more enjoyable. I have a very crowded African Cichlid tank with some large parrot fish in there as well so I still need to do a vacuum every other week to clean the fish poo from the bottom. I have it set to do two changes one on Wed and one on Saturday. I love it!

Hey George! I've owned this product for about 2 weeks now and in all honesty, i prefer the ATO option....i haven't found the perfect process to change out 20 percent of my 75 gallon tank, especially from within the sump. i wish someone can demonstrate a water change in a real situation with 55 gallons or above with the sensors in the sump. That would be a true demonstration. i've only seen demo's using buckets. Nice Sea horse tank!

thanks for the review, i already know the product from other reefer, my question is wend you ordered to remove the water, wend it stops did it brake siphon ? i use natural sea water and my intention is to make not 1 but several smaller water changes during the week, and my biggest fear always was if it really stops sending water out ... my other question would be, will this only work with the ATO of the same brand? thanks

What brand of a gravel vacuum would you recommend for a 29 gallon? I don’t need a python because I can just use a bucket to refill the tank so I don’t need the refill feature.

Question: If I didn't want to attach to the sump, would I be able to make a similar set-up to your demonstration with the buckets, but instead of buckets or a sump, during a water change the old water runs to a big water filter/bucket with filtration layers + hydroponic plants and then back to the tank? I'm very physically disabled but I'm obsessed with fish I love them so much! The water changes are just too much for me though and I'm trying to find a way to make a little self reliant system.

The Smart ATO Micro is by far the best "optional" piece of equipment I've ever bought for my 25 gallon tank. I hated manually topping off the water every day. Now I just fill a 10 gallon container with fresh water every week or two and let the ATO do its thing. The sensor is VERY accurate and has not failed once in the 12 months I've had it running. Even if it were to fail the timed overfill protection would kick in and stop it from flooding my tank (a feature I've tested). So yeah, if you're on the fence about this company maybe this random comment from an internet stranger will help you make up your mind.

How do you prevent the water in the buckets from over flowing? Does the AutoAqua Smart AQC also have sensors that go in the buckets and will prevent this? Or is it meant to be drained externally and for the intake to come from your water supply to your home? I hope you had a good graduation and have been doing well since especially the last 20 months of mayhem - I realise it is three years later I have seen this video.

If you have your reservoir below the tank and have the tubes go up first above the and out of the display tank then down to the reservoir that will ensure you won't have a gravity siphon occur. Hopefully that makes sense.

Downside for me is that this type of water change doesn't siphon up any detritus, so you'd still have to do that separately. Also, how did it not continue to siphon out your tank water when it stopped pumping out? Is there a valve in the pump?

Folks seem to have missed the fact that this is also an Auto Top-off device. You pay anywhere up to $100-150 for a decent ATO. An extra $50 gives you water changes as well. That in itself is worth the money. to me. Evaporation on a small tank can be huge, this allows ATO with fresh water to prevent salinity swings, and the option to do small regular water changes. Fragile or delicate creatures? Do a 2% water change every day. Minimal impact on the critters but great impact on the cleanliness of the tank. My only issue with this is that the only emergency/safety feature is an automated timer function. It works out how long AWC SHOULD take and if it takes a lot longer than that, it supposedly stops. But you could end up with 2 or 3 times the water volume being added back to the tank before that kick in. How would it have been to include a $10 float switch as an emergency backup? Triple redundancy!!

To me, it's not the water change itself which is the problem, but rather the price fo doing it. You have to either make RODI water or buy saltwater from a store, and that quickly adds up on the bill. That's why I am a fan of dosing & natural filtration. I see water changes more as a last resort against an unwanted pest, rather than a part of my regular maintenance :)

An air pump on a timer and a milk jug is what I use. Well two milk jugs. I drilled a small over flow into the back of an all in one tank. I have a line that runs to an empty jug. I have the air pump pump air into the clean water jug which forces water out into the tank. As the water rises it over flows into the empty jug. All I have to do is once a week dump the dirty jug and fill the clean jug. I can even hook the air pump upto Alexa and do the change when ever i want. This is obviously for my nano tank. So 1 gallon is plenty. And what i can fit in my stand. But if you have the room you could use two buckets. Cleaning the substrate I do once a month. And theres no making that easier. Or is there......... Ih yeah this is a way cheaper way to do it. And better looking because everything is behind the tank in the filter section.

How does it break the siphone, when draining the tank?

It has a small inline plastic siphone break that drips a little bit of water when being pumped and once stopped introduces air breaking the siphone.
