This Little $4,500 Electric Car is the Hottest Thing in China Right Now

In China, the most popular electric vehicle right now is the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, a tiny, boxy car just under 10 feet long. Its low price and cutesy look has made it a hit among Chinese millennials, who have taken to personalizing their car with Hello Kitty decor and Pokemon decals. Here’s why young people in China love it so much.

Until you get into an accident and it crumbles. While I think the US car safety regulations are absurd, they at-least exist for a general purpose. The US is car and highway dependent, but other countries, or ones like China, while they lack public transit and are more car dependent than other countries, they're still city-based so you can drive a little car on regular roads and it can sustain from a 30MPH accident. On our highways though, which Suburbia has made almost mandatory, this thing would probably get you killed, and not just because its small, the Smartfortwo was safe despite its small size, but its just the fact its a cheap car with laxed safety regulations. Its also probably underpowered and the range is really small for our US standards of driving 15 miles 1 way for a job. It of-course would fit in with certain cities, but over-all there is a reason small cars aren't sold here, because nobody buys them, highways are killer, literally. Its just another example of why a car-dependent society hurts us. Imagine a world where you have affordable transportation - Oh wait.. that's most of the world.. The US will choose not to participate, Instead people believe Musk is the savior, when he's just making the issue worse, but that's another topic.

This car seems like it would be great for a first car. It’s cheap but it’s still reliable and in good condition so you don’t have to worry about it breaking down. It will also be cheaper because it uses electricity instead of petrol. The small size might not be good for a big family but a young person will often just need to be transporting themselves so it being smaller just makes it cheaper.

I've been wanting to get a new car for a while and have done a LOT of looking but the price of even a good used car is insane. All these smart cars are great but in the US the cost of one is more money than the average person makes a year. My point is, you shouldn't have to be rich to drive a nice car with good technology. I feel like EVERYONE should start with something like this, that the average person can afford, and if you need something like a truck for work then make other versions. If you insist on driving anything else you should have to pay a substantial premium. I know it's not realistic but it's smart.

The issue with EV cars is that they only remove the combustion engine from within the vehicle. Which admittedly helps for better air quality in cities. However if you don't have renewable energy production, You only seek to hide the real problem from the eyes of the public. I mean, we still rely on fossil fuels to power the cars, we still rely on fossil fuels to manufacture them. I mean, in reality a battery is really just a "tank", however it is expensive, requiring tons of resources, rare lithium minerals while at the same time causing a lot of toxic waste and CO2 to produce. A point to consider is that a bus can transport the same amount of people (generally) as 60 cars will. Trains can do even more than that. While people generally don't travel more than one person per vehicle. So really if we want to care about the environment we need to create proper green transportation infrastructure rather than exploit private consumables that only results in exploiting our environment, with resources, materials, cheap labour, excessive energy consumption and waste... EV shouldn't be "fashion" consumables it should be a part of a holistic long term environmental strategy.

They should really bring this to the west as its just so affordable for an electric car or really just a car in general and I like how small it is, I feel that too many cars in the west are too big and bloated especially when your only transporting one maybe two people at a time, not to mention the mods that can be done to this as well; this car just fills a niche that Tesla couldn't.

I bought one for about $3700 and I'm happy with it because it's so convenient. He's arguably the worst quality car of all, but he's a car, and one that I can afford. He has airbags, power, insurance, brakes, air conditioning, everything a car should have, and it's comfortable to drive. He has a good career, although small, but the vision is better than the small car and the same as the mid-size car. The power is low, the top speed is not high, but it is very nimble, can park in small places, turn into small alleys, and the power is enough in the city. And the quality is very good, you can climb very steep slopes, walk on uneven roads, and pass even in deep water. Plus I spent about $500 to refit it, added fast charging and a bigger battery. Even if I buy other expensive cars in the future, I will use it a lot in the city because it is really convenient and fashionable so I won't lose face.

As a Singaporean, I'm very jealous. I truly understand because our country is small causing cars out here to be so expensive. But instead of having those high-end ev's or huge cars, why not provide something like this. Smaller in size prevent road congestion. And all the mod's we can do to reflect our personality, it's just so cool. Having high power cars in Singapore is super unnecessary too, due to the number of traffic lights, and short highways with speed cameras almost everywhere. I just want my teenage dream comes to life.

The Toyota AE86 is from Initial D, which first came out as a manga, anime, then a film adaptation. Among the car community who also watches anime the car is well known beacuse of the way Takumi Fujiwara used it during racing competitions with more formidable cars.

I think this is a better car than a Tesla, no unwanted/unneeded gadgets and set up like a traditional car which is what most people want. Even the price reflects this and with less to go wrong this should age better. Only three draw backs, no right hand drive (I live in the UK), only goes 62mph (To be useful it would need to hit 70 to 75mph) and it has a gear selector knob rather than a lever (Something I hate on cars, like you're changing the spin cycle on your washer rather than selecting gear). Everything else is perfect, even lacking the hateful electronic handbrake is a big plus, makes the car a better experience to drive and removes a failure point which only serves to bump the price up)
