I have mixed feelings about the new adaptation but THIS?!?!?! I absolutely love that they have incorporated Leaves From The Vine while still keeping the "It's Mako's song. No one sings it but him." That makes no sense. So if they have the scene of iroh singing it under the tree next season that would somehow be disrespectful? I’m sure Mako would hate that worldview and want the song to be sung by the new actor. Don’t imagine he’s as selfish as you are
@marian799

@@collinwiniarski4703 i don't think that people would necessarily see a new version as something super disrespectful, but since it was one of the last things mako did for the show, the song is a way to honor and remember him for all his work. i know that irohs voice actor in the third season, greg baldwin, does not sing this song for fans because he sees it as something special to mako and his memory.

They're probably just saving it for season 2. It'd be silly to deprive people who only watched the live action of the great scene where he sings it, just out of some weird notion of respect for someone who definitely would have wanted the story to reach as many people as possible. All they need to do is add the "In honor of Mako" text to the S2 episode where Iroh sings it, and I doubt anyone in their right mind will think it's disrespectful in any way.

This reminds me that uncle Iroh WAS a general, a respected high-ranking royalty but also a war criminal who deserved a lot of fear. With that fear comes isolation. People would not want to connect with someone so vile. This leaves Iroh lonelier than ever. This was a funeral ffs. Iroh was the sole person close to the departed yet no one sits with him, no one consoles him. This is atypical for a wake. In our world, we almost never leave that 'person' Zuko really did saved him.
@aceshighdueceslow

you have to remember that General Iroh is also considered an "embarrassment" to the Fire Nation at this point as well, because he abandoned his siege on Ba Sing Se when he received news that Lu Ten died. In the original series we didn't have a funeral scene, we just heard from Zuko, Azula, and Ursa about Iroh's grief (and how Ozai wanted to use Iroh's weakness to usurp his place as direct heir). The absence of the entire royal family (even Fire Lord Azulon isn't present) in this scene sets a precedent for the rest of the Fire Nation citizenry. Zuko, soon to be the crown prince, choosing to sit and grieve with a "traitor" sends a powerful message within the show and to the audience.

When that music hit I'm not crying you are! 😭
i had a lot of mixed feelings about the show until i watched this scene. it was always made clear that zuko had too much of his mothers goodness in him but dallas brought a softness and tenderness to zuko we didn’t really get to see in the animated show. the show humanised him, allowed us to see who he was before his banishment and the desperation for his fathers affection and approval consumed everything he was and quelled all of that goodness. i LOVE the relationship between zuko and iroh too, it’s so important to his character arc and his redemption + reclamation of who he’s meant to be. iroh is the father he deserved, the father he DID have and iroh got to be the father he should have been to luten. 😢
Zuko always has a good heart. He became "evil" just because he wanted to take back his right as the heir. It was shown even from the very beginning, he really left the water tribe behind after he had Aang as his prisoner. Other Fire Nation commanders would still attack and burn the village to the ground even after they got what they wanted.
Those for whom this is their first ATLAB experience can’t possibly understand the feels of that tune starting up. Even at the end of this scene, by itself, doesn’t carry the impact of this scene with the experience of ‘tales of Bar-sing Se’ under your belt.

This was the best way to adapt leaves from the vine. I'm not the biggest fan of some of the changes and new direction and focus of this remake... but I don't think anyone can refuse to give kudos to this scene and everything that went into it. Respect
The little things shown in this scene, for example when Iroh raised his head up, when Zuko sat down, gives such a stronger spectrum of emotion between there relationship.
So I’m not someone who cries during movie too often but this was one of the few times I legitimately cried my eyes out
For all the flaws of this adaptation, expanding on the relationship between Iroh and Zuko is definitely one of the things that they got right.

While there were issues with this live adaptation, their depiction of Zuko, Iroh, and their relationship together were absolutely spot on. This was an amzing adaptation of Leaves from the Vine.
This…this right here. Is how you do a live action adaptation of a show. Putting effort and heart into this.
This live action was amazing. I didn’t watch the show before it. Perhaps it wasn’t perfect, but it brought me to the original and now I understand this scene even more profoundly. ATLA fans should be thankful that it’s good enough to introduce fans to the original.
My partner and I were screaming at the T.V. for the majority of this episode. Then this scene came on and we were silenced. Cried. And accepted the respect given to such a translation of important imformation
Ive never wanted to hug Zuko more...
A good person like Iroh dosen't deserve sad moments like this.
Yeah, this was the moment that sold me on this show. It's not perfect, but it knows what to tell with it's old and new audience. That's what I wanted from this adaptation, to know what's it telling, if they know the story from front to back, and want to tell a new version of it, then give it a shot, pour your heart knowing that YOU love this world and want to tell it.
Im so glad they didnt make anyone sing it. i got choked up as soon as i heard the instrumental in the background

Okay, this is something I like about this adaptation. It’s a heal heartfelt moment and it’s a good change for once.
I didn’t even notice leaves from the vine in the background when I first saw it, now I’m even more sad
It came out of nowhere and ripped my heart out. Now THAT is how one writes an emotional scene! And beautifully done with the music 🥰😭 they both (Zuko and Iroh) did an amazing job in this scene. Iroh's in maximum shock and grieve, his look's empty, yet full of grieve over the loss of his beloved child. No one can get trough this wall, Ozai...only praising the death in duty for the firenation...just empty words. Zuko first of all as well but than showed his real emotion and this touched Iroh's heart. AND Zuko stays with his uncle... I bawled my eyes out, watching it 3 times. And when Iroh began to cry too, I totally lost it
Paul is the perfect actor to take the role of Iroh
This video could also be titled, "How to make any Avatar: The Last Airbender fan cry in just Four Notes!"
Some people hate the new la but everyone has to agree that this scene is great as the original version of the song
Poor Iroh. I can’t imagine the pain of losing your only child and heir to everything of yours. The love of your life does not always have to be a spouse or romantic person, it can be your son, your mother, your friends.
Lu Ten was probably ALOT like Iroh and seemed to be Zuko’s hero. If Lu Ten didn’t die I can’t imagine how much better off Zuko would’ve been
Ive watched this scene so many times. Weirdly enough, it helps me with my own serious trauma relating to death. The gorgeous reinterpretation of Leaves From The Vine, the respect for Mako by not having vocals, Zukos speech, the pained yet grateful look in Iroh’s eyes… Even if The animated show is better, I am glad this one exists for this scene alone. Rest in peace, Mako.
One of the best relationships
Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Greg Baldwin are really great friends that hang out a lot. Both agree that "It's Mako's song. No one sings it but him." I wasn't expecting to see Lu Ten's funeral in live action at all but it is one of the best additions the Netflix series did. With Season 2 and 3 announced and greenlit for production. There's a chance we will see Iroh's Tales of Ba Sing Se episode played by Paul. It is doubtful that he will actually sing the song if he and Greg politely refuse to do so... but we probably will need to prepare for another bout of tear bending in the next season.
Rest in peace Mako Iwamatsu. You made our childhood and we are forever grateful.
Iroh. Gotta love Uncle Iroh. He stayed strong to save his nephew when he couldn't save his son. The "Leaves from the Vine" scene by the tree is a tearjerker. That one had me crying when it aired. Hearing just the simple piano instrumental with no one singing it... Perfect direction choice. One of the scenes that I've always loved was when Zuko returned and Iroh said, "I was never angry with you. I was afraid you had lost your way." -- LOVE. That is LOVE. Iroh become the father Zuko needed. Zuko didn't replace Iroh's son, but in caring about Zuko, teaching him, and taking him under his wing, Zuko helped to heal him.
