It's hard to compare suffering. South Africans fought colonialist settler oppression for over 400years. Many people died through-out, and many more affected (i.e. displaced, dispossessed and dehumanized). The generational trauma is unimaginable and elements of Apartheid still linger to this day. The vestiges of Apartheid are still enjoyed by whites - its main benefactors - at the expense of the people. Predominantly white political parties in South Africa support Israel (i.e. Apartheid, genocide and ethnic cleansing) for the same reason black South Africans support Hamas and Palestine (liberation struggle against an oppressive colonial-settler regime).

Thanks to the many protests in the US and around the world and thanks to the bravery of SA and it's petition to the ICJ, the US, under this pressure, will have to provide less political and financial support to Israel. However unfortunately the US already provided a huge military supply package to Isreal without congressional review. The US still however has the greatest amount of influence over Israel and I hope that they demand that Isreal stop this barbaric genocide immediately.

This is why independent media is so important. I wouldn’t have gained the insights I received from this video from cnn or msnbc. Thank you for your work and providing a platform for constructive conversation and truth.

Daniel Machover is an excellent speaker and he gives us all considerable insight. Let us hope that many countries now back the heroic initiative of South Africa.

This has inspired me to write to the prime minister in my country about our responsibility under the Genocide Convention to prevent genocide. Sitting on the sidelines with a case of bystander syndrome is not enough. Each of the signatories has a legal obligation to act.

Thanks very much Owen, this is an invaluable resource as I put together my letter to my government reps calling for Australia to stand with South Africa et al. Beyond disgusting how Western governments have been dragging their feet on this. We the people are getting quite the education though. You, Daniel and his forebears are gems.

I'm holding my breath on this to take place. It is a watershed moment for the international community to prove its relevance, and for everyone involved to face reality. Not just a slap on the hand but real action to stop the obvious which has been happening for a very very long time. Many are paying an enormous price for peace in their lifetime.

Wow, Mr Machover, your parents statement in 1967 is probably the best expression of the futility of Israel’s approach to the situation I have ever heard. Thank you for sharing this with us and I hope you don’t mind me using it to lobby my (deaf) MP to press for a meaningful ceasefire and support for South Africa’s ICJ submission.

What a fantastic interview, Owen thank you so much for inviting this brilliant lawyer. Imagine his parents predicted something like this to happen decades ago & he’s here talking about it.

The United States will veto any order by the ICJ sadly. However, it will make it even more evident that the USA has no respect for international human rights and international law. It is important for the rest of the world to see this. Also, it is important for the genocide to be documented. It may take years for there to be justice. But, I have faith there will be one day.

Each evening I am with my little children and I need not worry about my children being bombed being slaughtered... I guess if you read this then you can understand how normal that is... We eat some food and do things as a family just normal stuff nothing to exiting... We seep in a warm safe home... If my own children became collateral damage ( Slaughtered ) then I can not even begin to imagine how I would feel... Can you imagine that feeling ? Can you imagine how they must be feeling ? Is this me being anti Semitic ? I am just anti slaughter no matter who is responsible for the crime. This needs to stop and it needed to stop long ago... War criminals need holding to account or nothing will ever change and perhaps one day it will be our own children...

Kudos to South Africa.

Machover speaks of a failure of the UN. But in the UN, only two countries have actually ever blocked measures against Israel: the USA and Israel. These two countries are the real problem. Israel's settlement policy on the West Bank is land grabbing, as in the case of Russia and Crimea. The difference is that in the case of Crimea, the annexation took place without violence because the majority of the Crimean population is Russian and supported/approved of the annexation. So West Bank is probably more comparable to the case of Eastern Ukraine / Donbas. The USA is dragging the West into a very unfavorable geopolitical situation. And the stupidity of the US people is incomprehensible. Not only do they not approve of Israel's actions. They also finance Israel generously. The latest US aid package for Israel is several times larger than the recent one for Ukraine.

South Africa defeated an Apartheid regime in part because other nations refused to be silent. We remember especially Palestine, whose support of our struggle was not just rhetorical but material.
