Future help for moving steel... I ran into this problem... I built what is basically a strong pallet, with some hefty swivel casters on it. I jack up one end of the steel pile and place the rolling pallet under that end. Then I pick up the other end with a pallet jack. Now I can roll the entire stack, fairly effectively, with just 1 person. The advantage to this over using just a 2nd pallet jack is... 1: The swivel casters allow the pallet much greater freedom of movement than a pallet jack has. 2: The rolling pallet is still able to be picked up by a forklift... so I also use it to move smaller large projects and can even lift it into a vehicle easily. 3: Use locking casters so you can stop it from rolling.

Priorities! Also- you might be surprised that a lot of industrial equipment can be had on the cheap at auction or surplus etc. This is largely because it might be considered out of date by most of industry and is out of reach for hobbyists because of the expense and complication of moving it along with requiring a lot of space to house it. This is the reason that small milling machines are almost always more expensive than a good used full size knee mill. Supply and demand.

Lights - You can get retrofit LED tubes for the flourescents which are very good, and you can change yourself easily (on old fittings with a starter). Or better, change the whole fitting, but get a electrician to do that. that would improve your background lighting levels tremendously. just like the LED panels you have already purchaced.

Hey Alec, to use the overhead lights you need to do 2 mods to them: To fix the flicker you need to upgrade the ballast in each fixture from old school magnetic to modern electronic. Make sure the drive frequency is in kHz (they all are). In the US that would be about $20 / fixture. To fix the color just upgrade the bulb to high CRI bulbs (>90) like Sylvania SunSticks or Philips Supreme.

Hey Alec! I don't know if you've ever heard of a degloving injury, but I doubt it, since you still wear you wedding band while you work. If not I would advise against googling it, and look up silicone wedding bands instead. They aren't too expensive, and safe to wear while you operate machinery because they just snap if they get caught on something. You can save the gold one for date night. Just a thought. Keep up the good work.

Fluorescent lights: back in the analogue days before automatic and custom white balance, the only way you could have them not turn green in film was to wrap the tubes in magenta sheets of gel. You don’t need very deep ones (so that it doesn’t mess with your eyes while working) but this way you are bringing the neons closer to the white balance of the LED panels. The camera will do the rest.

4:58 My second job after getting married was at a custom wood products company. "Stephen's Custom Wood" back in '88. Within a couple months he and his plant manager were calling me "Jig Master". Fast forward to '97, I worked at a semi production/ semi custom shop. And as the new guy I was tested. I built a sliding table saw jig to cut the corner off of side panels for parapets that we used for bank teller stations. The Forman ridiculed me for doing so. After being on my own in 2004 I returned there for some CNC parts and wouldn't you know...the same Forman is clipping corners with "my" jig! The secret to success is in the process. Be it rigging or jigging. 👍🏼 -✌🏼

Alec, you can change those lights to LED fairly easily. you disconnect the ballast inside and rewire the sockets to power the LED bulb. Ask your electrician for direct wire LED bulbs to put in it, they have come down in price to about $6 a bulb and when you direct wire, you get rid of the hum from the lights.

You could do a cheap and quick upgrade to your flourescent tubes. Just look up flourescent led conversion kits. You basically just remove the ballasts and the electrical connectors. It's all pretty simple stuff and you can get led tubes that meet your specific lighting needs. I think you can even get rgb controlled lights if you want to have color control.

I get that with the magic of editing that it can look quicker then it actually is but the way both he and Will can visualize a solution to fabricating it always will impress me. That being said. How long is Alex planing on using this work space? He made it sound like it was short term but this is an impressive setup and investment. I probably missed him explaining it in an earlier video.

Alec, not the best location for the lathe. Should consider putting it on the wall behind you with the tailstock pointing towards the back wall with the electrical box on it. The reason is that the tailstock doesn't move further back than the ways allow it to, but you can put a long bar through the chuck. Don't put your knee-mill like you did in Montana, put it to the left of the laths' head and line the "X" axis of the table up with the through-hole in the head. That way you have more options for running a-long part or stock. Just drop the milling machine's knee and mount a steady rest on the table so the bar doesn't whip around and now you can load a 12' bar into the machine or pick up "Job-shop" work. The way you have it now you have the wall too close and no way to stabilize the bar without getting too complicated of a setup. Best of luck any questions just ask.

I really like it when KZreadrs advertise things that would be useful and or are actually good. I once had a summer job in which shipping was one of my duties, and I would have loved to have something like this. I had all my carriers on different webpages/software, even some on manual labels. Nothing integrated with each other. The only thing that saved me was that 70 % of the stuff went to the same address.

Think about LED fluorescent replacement bulbs for the fixtures you have there already. Bypass the ballast and wire direct. They come in 45w, 60w and 90w with different levels of "coolness". They're usually about 12-15% brighter then the old ones. Just changed out ours in the garage took about 15-20 minutes per fixture. We used 8ft. 45w 5000k (medium coolness) with frosted covers each one had 5400 lumens. Just about have to work in sunglasses! Ours bulbs had the single pin in the end so we could turn them and direct them out slightly this made for very little shadows. Good luck!

I see that you have been reading about the Toyota Operating System as I had suggested. You also had a good example of wasted movement of materials/parts and an example of why everything needs a home and you should consider the needs of the material (what is going to happen to it, how it gets there and how it leaves) when you make it a home. Great work on the steel rack and have a big 👍 on actually bolting it to the ground. Just like the racking you have back in Montana for the retail part of the shop, it needs to be bolted to the floor so it is stronger by being braced against the floor and so it can't tip over. This wasn't something I had even known was a big deal till I worked at a warehouse and we did daily racking inspections looking for the bolts being in place, loose materials, lack of labeling, unsafe pallet placement, and even signs of corrosion. Only ever had 2 problems there during inspection over 2 years. One was damage from a forklift hitting the racking with the hardened forks, the other I personally found and it was the bolts for one of the uprights had sheared off. Most likely over torqued or bad bolts. The company replaced the bolts for the entire aisle, just in case.
