They wrongly depict Jesus' initial arrest as being indoors, alone and led out of the building to outside, while Peter lurked in an outside side courtyard area, then they jump to him being in the courtyard trying to keep warm at a fire pit where most of the denials apparently happened. Then suddenly Jesus is back, on the upper floor promenade walkway that lines the courtyard (that wasn't there previously), and catches Peter's eye after his third denial. Also it's funny that they leave out the entire context of Peter's behavior and why he did what he did. Because had they depicted Jesus arrest properly as it is in the Bible, it would have been in the garden, and Peter would've slashed one of the arresters ears off. Jesus healed/restored it, and told Peter not to turn to violence in this matter. (They could've easily censored/summarized this part by just showing Peter being defensive of Jesus and perhaps saying that the arrester got hurt and Jesus healed them and admonished Peter for the attack). Okay, with this in mind of course Peter was fearful. Him being associated with Jesus was probably more to do with his attack on the arrester at this point. Sure, Jesus heal him (so no harm no foul, so long as the arrester didn't say anything), but because of his association, the attack might have been brought up regardless, and he would've been punished for that alone (I'd imagine it would be like attacking a cop who was arresting one's friend). Peter's denial was more about separating his closeness to Jesus as far as his association/loyality/willingness to defend (violently) him. Like looking back it's more like Peter was like "Sure, I followed him around and listened to his stuff, but I didn't know him personally. I was a fan... not a friend."- which of course was a lie. Anyway, the cartoon tries badly to make it seem like it was him celebrating his classmate's birthday by attempting to eat a cupcake, then failing to explain himself was the sin- when actuality if they wanted to really bring up any sinning in this scenario, it was him taking the cupcake without asking for permission to do so (thus stealing; as he wasn't initially part of the party- and therefore not supposed to take from something that didn't belong to him {the cupcakes belonging to the the party members which at the time he wasn't in}). However, the birthday boy catches him in his 'sin', and is kind enough to forgive him and give him the permission to take and eat the cupcake. So the lesson could have been about false guilt, or about the lingering effects that being caught in sin and forgiven for said sin has. (IE: Still feeling guilty about the sin even though you've been forgiven). This would have been a much better use of the scenario given.

If i can remember correctly, the reason that JW doesnt celebrate bdays its because in the only 2 bdays that the bible mentions, they killed a christian. So, even if the modern version of a bday its not that violent, the origin of the celebration was something bad, plus theres not a single mention of a christian celebrating his/her bday on the bible, just people that didnt served to Jehova

If I were to rewrite this entire cartoon; it would be this. The family is preparing cupcakes for their daughter’s first birthday. The brother, no more than five, eats all of them despite the family telling him their saving it for the afternoon when the rest of the relatives arrive. When they discover this they kindly ask him if he ate it. He lies three times, and the parents, certain he did it, shrug their shoulders and tell him, “ok, if we find out you lied, you’ll be staying in your room for the party tonight.” The boy spends the rest of the day bothered by his conscience, and in the end admits what he did. His parents forgive what he did, as commanded by God. So to make up for it, the bother helps his parents bake another batch before the relatives arrive.

I heard some non JW parents won't celebrate their kids' birthdays because you're going to turn a year older anyway, so why reward you for something you didn't have to work hard at to achieve? But they probably still let their kids go to other kid's birthday parties.

They don't see Jesus as their savior who sacrificed himself for the sins of mankind; you have to be blameless by Watchtower standards to "earn" their salvation. Her mom seemed at once intense and also a little loosey goosey or did certain things to circumvent their beliefs and practices without devastating Jehovah. But definitely no celebration no acknowledgment. My friend was conditioned but not a believer (at this time she was around 22). She had woken up shortly before that, thank GOD. I helped her do a lot of processing and deconstructing (as I also had to do this as an evangelical fundamentalist Christian). And I am honored I got to help her with that. She couldn’t wait to do all the things she wasn’t allowed to growing up for no good reason. We worked together in a hospital cafeteria and she wanted to do a gift exchange around Christmas during our lunch break. So we sat in the sunroom and exchanged (awesome) personalized gifts celebrating who we were (knowing each other very well) and I brought some decorations. The joy I was able to finally bring her that is available to almost everyone else in some form or another but she was denied was just… it was one of the best moments of my life. 🎉🎄🎂🎁🎊😊🥰 (Just FYI that was like 8 years ago and she is now professionally a human rights and global health advocate 😁😊💗)

I don't remember many conversations. The ones that stuck with me, though, were when she told me that she didn’t celebrate any holidays, not even her own birthday. I couldn't understand why and she told me because she was a Jehovah Witness. She asked me if I believed in Jehovah. Not realizing that Jehovah is just God, I said no and she told me I could go to hell if I don't believe in him. Fast forward, I see a book in my Grandma's house that calls God by the name Jehovah. Now I know who Jehovah is. Next time I see my JW friend, I tell her that I do believe in Jehovah, but I still celebrate holidays. I don't remember exactly what she said, but it was along the lines of that it doesn’t matter, I will not make it into heaven. She said something about my skin tone (I'm black) and I think after she told me that I would go to hell no matter what, she scared me so bad that I just... avoided her. And she avoided me. My parents told me that what she said wasn't true (they aren't religious at all nowadays, but at the time, they were still holding onto pieces of Christianity because of how they were raised). They said I didn’t have to worry about that, just be a good person and I could get into Heaven. Now I'm 22, I'm an atheist and so are my parents. Sometimes, I think back to how a CHILD managed to scare me, another child, so bad that I would pick up any bible I found and try to read through it. I could read books higher than my grade level, but I wasn't interested in such tiny letters and strange metaphors I didn’t understand in this huge book with no pictures and, to me, had no story with no fun characters. Even though my parents found that strange, they gave me Christian books actually meant for kids even though they themselves were leaning towards atheism. I obviously dropped it once I stopped being afraid. I can only imagine how damaging an adult telling a child something like that is, considering it was another kid that scared me into a part of it for a time. I appreciate that my parents didn't force Christianity on me because they know how that feels. They didn't force atheism on me, either. They just let me decide and grow into whatever and it all worked out. Sometimes, I wonder how that girl is doing. I'm 22 now, she's probably 22, too. I don't care about another's religion if it's not bothering me directly or hurting anyone, but JW... it hurts and warps a child's mind and makes them an outcast among their peers. She was a miserable 6 year old. Hopefully, she's happier these days.

The black part is strange tbh. My experiences with JWs are that they ban birthdays and holidays but I've never seen them go racist like that. Mormons on the other hand carried a racist doctrine that they kept until they later on condemned it and banned it. I wonder if those JWs in question you dealt with were racists who preserved their racism for a long time. Wouldn't be surprising if they had a mostly white congregation or a mostly non-black one otherwise they would just leave that heretical cult. Unlike Judaism, Christianity is an open religion where anyone can join and be saved regardless of race(this is the part where far-right pagans seethe). There's a reason why JWs are mocked by almost all Christians, atheists, agnostics, etc. It's because of their strange beliefs and due to the fact that they say and do crazy stuff Galatians 3:29 and Romans 9:6-8 at least show us that anyone of any race can be saved regardless of their race, ethnicity, and skin color. Though if I were to raise my kids as Christians in the future, I'd be hands off as long it's not something that goes against the Bible. If they want to be atheists, that fine as I'll generally respect their decisions once they get older. One thing I'd never do is say that they'll or their friends will burn in hell(well JWs don't believe in hell but they believe that only they will not be annihilated during Armageddon) for not being Christian or even for being in the wrong sect of Christianity(idc if someone's Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, o non-denominational as they will be saved)

Marriage was divinely instituted by God. It's not a celebration putting individuals on a pedestal for existing. It's a day where couples take time to reflect on the joyfulness of that event and on their resolve to work for success as a couple. In a world where over 50% of marriages fail due to not keeping God in a three fold cord, wedding anniversaries honor God as the sole reason they work. Jesus himself both attended a marriage celebration and contributed to the pleasure of the occasion. You can't say the same about him attending one of his 12 apostles birthdays. His own mother's birthday or any other celebration with Pagan ties

Why would anyone want to be friends with such a overly-sensitive, inhumane god like that?

It would've made more sense if his attitude was about the guilt feelings that remain after being forgiven. His real sin was stealing, not celebrating. The Birthday boy forgave him, allowing him to take the cupcake. "It's okay, you can have it." - this is clear language to show that the kid was aware that Caleb was sneaking/stealing a cupcake (likely he had a vague awareness at least at some the rules Caleb has followed in the past), and was like "I know you were trying to steal, but I know that you want a cupcake, because cupcakes are tasty treats and we don't often get cupcakes to eat... I want you not miss out", sort of friendly outreach. The kid was probably trying to be his friend. Also the others overwhelmed him, so it was no wonder he choked (considering he seems rather shy/introverted).

A portuguese former JW here and I relate a lot with some comments. That's a fundamentalist cult that makes people feel like everything but a human being. And for a kid, that's horrible. Everything is dogmatic, everything is so weird seen from now on... I was raised in an almost illiterate household, and a non functional one, where things like this cult are likely to grow. Thankfully I quited, despite the pressure, and despite my mother and her mother (which is like a second mom to me) are still in the religion. But the damage was already made. And when I look for the 10-12yo me (I'm 32) I feel sad for the things I passed for being linked to that cult. That only implies through beliefs, though. Outside of religious beliefs, you’d be fine (I think). And even then, everything about birthdays, Christmas, etc are just personal likeness/opinions. No one will stop you from what you want to do. But in this case, if you seriously believe in a religion, (JW for this one), then the boy will be out of luck.

I am a Christian but even my heavily traditional church recognizes the extra rules found in many denominations that have little to no reason biblically. What is really interesting is how Pagan Traditions are handled. It is like the Christmas Tree. Pagans decorated their home with plants over winter. When they converted to Christianity they did not have to remove the olants from their homes because their was nothing sinful about the act itself. Just because a tradition has a connotation to something doesn't mean it is bad in the here and now. What matters is what is on your heart. Not what was on people's hearts thousands of years ago.

In what I see and have experienced so far, just because one is a Christian, doesn’t mean the other person in the corner is the same Christian. Honestly, throughout the years, it is impossible to know for certainty if the Christian who celebrates Christmas is an actual Christian or the Christian who doesn’t celebrate Christmas is the actual. (that was a mouthful) Then there’s the other side in which are committed followers of God, but no one wants to talk about them because they get thrown into the first two categories. Know this (from what I’ve learned): If you celebrate traditions that seem fit for the terrenal, you’re not a Christian, but a “Christian”. If you don’t celebrate the traditions that are from the terrenal and only be against what the terrenal represents, then you’re a Christian. Even so, respect each other, because they have chosen their paths.

Why is it that anytime someone disagrees with a JW or questions them about their claims/beliefs, it's automatically labeled as "hate"? [Jesus’] parents [Joseph and Mary] went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. Being devout Jews, Joseph and Mary would be obliged to be in Jerusalem at least three times yearly, bringing Jesus along. Had nothing to do with the day of his birth. Joshua 24:15 "NIV" But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. "Or Jehovah NWT" Matthew 28:19,20 Go, therefore, and make disciples of people of all the nations,a baptizing themb in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. This includes your children Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. Again it is the parents responsibility (especially the father) to instruct his children in the standards God set forth. Calebs father is clearly concerned about his child's welfare and wants him to be faithful in least so that he will be faithful in much Luke 16:10

Christian here: the reason why certain foods were off limits is because God knew that they were prone to disease, and so by making it off limits he would be protecting Israel in that way. (Of course, there were many other silly laws put in place by the corrupt religious leaders of those days. Like you could divorce your wife if she was mute or simply for any other reason.) But thankfully once Jesus came and spoke on the sermon of the mount he cleared up those different laws and basically went: times have changed people.

Nawhh sex is so taboo in all versions of christianity- I've heard stories about christians who didn't even KNOW what sex was and had to have their WIFE explain it to them. Sex does NOT get discussed, at the very LEAST until marriage. The most you get is, "When a man loves a woman so much, and marries her, they will have a child." Honestly I'm surprised my mom even touched the subject with me when I was younger. Although it was a shit explanation that I avoided having with her because it took her too long to tell me so I studied on the internet. (Not a JW btw in case wondering, but it was still surprising)

I was pleasantly surprised that the creator, while poking fun at concepts and making his disagreements known, didn't come across as hateful and even used the Bible itself to explain how a lot of the JW beliefs arent even biblical in nature. Anyway I found this entertaining without being mean-spirited, and I will probably watch more
