Believe it or not, MDMA was legal less than 50 years ago and frequently used in therapy. The DEA changed that. But what if I told you that MDMA is making a comeback...in therapy? We're going to take an eye-opening (pun intended) delve into what ecstacy does to your brain, how molly came to be what it is today, and what possibilities lie ahead as a possible treatment for mental illness.
From its accidental inception in a pharmaceutical lab to the underground scenes of the 1970s, we uncover MDMA's evolution - from therapeutic wonder to recreational sensation to outlawed danger to...therapeutic wonder again? Anyway, I'll help you understand the neuroscience--its mechanism and potential risks while contemplating its newfound resurgence in modern medicine, with groundbreaking trials hinting at transformative therapies for PTSD and beyond.
But the real question remains: Could MDMA be the revolutionary treatment we've been waiting for, a potential beacon of hope in the realm of mental health? Or is it just a fun way to spend an evening at a rave or in a cuddle puddle?
Share your thoughts on MDMA and its potential uses! Have you had any personal experiences with MDMA, positive or negative? Do you believe it should be used in a medical or recreational setting? Leave those all in the comments.

The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. The war on drug has been an absolute fail, enabling the creation and rise of cartels all around the world. All drugs should be legal, and the money spent on this war allocated to prevention and mental care. The governments or regulated companies would produce the drugs, which would save countless lives. Some countries have taken a step in the right direction, like Portugal, where all drugs are decriminalized.

My first time doing MDMA was probably the most profound experience of my life. I took a point (100mg) which was almost exactly 1mg/kg. I could go in depth of my experience but I would hit the character cap for KZread comments. All I will say is that it was without a doubt the most profound experiences of my entire life and I wish everybody to be able to experience this substance before they leave this Earth. If you do decide to give it a go make sure to test it without the Marquis Reagent at a minimum, if not Simons and Froedhe reagents as well and don’t exceed the recommended 1-1.5mg/kg dose range.

Started off taking MDMA recreationally in the late 90s (back when it was ecstasy) and began using it several times a year in my 20s.... one of the most pivotal times I used it was at age 24 on the day my older brother died (at age 26)..it totally changed the way I look at death and it helped me process my brother's passing in a totally different/more healthy way than the rest of my family. Over my 30s I started using it less and less (mainly because my friends stopped using it as we got older). Now in my late 40s, I try to use it recreationally at least once a year and I am a huge advocate of it's use for both recreation and therapeutically for PTSD.

@@toxic7767 Well, I'm coming from a self-growth perspective. I think it can be a powerful psychotherapeutic tool for exploring emotions. I don't think you get that in a party atmosphere. One reason I think it should stay off the streets is that it ruins it with the lawmakers. Its whats made it so hard to bring psychedelics back in psychiatry. The only reason LSD and these substances were outlawed was because it hit the streets. Before that, over 40,000 research papers were written on LSD. Its listing as a schedule 1 substance was the result of recreational use. Unfortunately, it shut down virtually all legitimate research in the process. So recreational use makes it harder for people to accept in mainstream science. Plus there are always dangers with street drugs.
I really reccommend ecstasy for people who never tried it before but keep a limit on it. Last year I've took a pill 6 days in a row and some days I've took 7 pills at once. I've never felt more dumb and depressed before but I only noticed how bad it was after I went sober. These days I usually take 1 pill per 3 months and I found that to be a good line. Cheers if anyone find this comment useful.

I can't wait until MDMA is available for PTSD treatment. I have done ecstasy recreationally and it was good quality, I never felt so good, I had been searching for that connection for years in therapy, and I have been trying ever since to get it back !
Ive done mdma on probably 30 + occasions and only once was it very high quality pure mdma. It was the absolute best experience with the drug and I had no come down. I was blissed out for weeks at least. My friend who has done twice as much mdma as me had the same experience that day. I think its important to understand that the pharmaceutical stuff will be as good as it gets and likely be the same way for most people. A lot of people talk about how bad the come downs are but have probably never had super pure squeaky clean mdma.

Had some Australian friends try the dutch mdma I had with me once (~75% of the worlds mdma supply comes from the Netherlands). They had done MDMA before, but they were in awe of the feeling pure MDMA gave them, not mixed with Amphetamines for example, which can't be compared. Here in NL you get the raw MDMA crystals in a bag.

good mdma definitely feels cleaner and has less negative effects compared to meth molly and suspicious pressies/powder! but you can have bad comedowns from pure mdma. it really depends on the person, their brain chemistry, the dose, whether or not they took supplements, etc. i’ve had a lotta clean pure molly rocks reagent tested and everything off the same batches me and my friends have different results even on the same dose. i have some friends who rarely or have never had comedowns. some just get mild comedowns. i have a friend who just can’t fully feel mdma or mda anymore, like she just doesn’t roll. i roll hard asf off low doses but i get horrible comedowns every single time i roll. there’s things i can do to make it a bit better, like it’s worse if i redose or take higher doses. but still i always get comedowns

@@jarzezIt’s not ‘pure’. We still cut stuff in in the Netherlands because completely pure MDMA is actually too dangerous. But I get what you mean. We don’t tend to cut the dirty things the Americans do. It’s also super easy to test in the Netherlands so this discourages suppliers from doing that. American MDMA typically has heroin, meth and cocaine in it. Often there is more of these things than MDMA in American Ecstasy. Usually we cut pretty harmless things like weight loss drugs and stuff. And the drug is still mostly MDMA
Great video : ) Speaking from personal experience, MDMA (coupled with self-work, and all of the modern resources on we have to learn about psychology nowadays) has been a gamechanger. I was a raver in the 90's, but never used it because I was very guarded, counterdependent, and Avoidant - and thought that MDMA was WAY too "touchy feely hippie" for me. It wasn't until I tried it with a friend about 7 years ago now, and had a great conversation with her where I felt very relaxed and vulnerable, but unafraid that the ice really started melting for me. I think MDMA might really help a lot of men in particular who have been taught to suppress their emotions, and are suffering in silence.

Mushrooms were the hardest drugs I'd experimented with before that time I decided to try E under the care of a friend. I read about it online and off we went to the mountains. That night, I felt like I had never before. I couldn't believe how it was possible to be that happy but I also wondered if I had crossed a line I wasn't going to uncross. It was like you said at 14:10. Then 2 days later happened. I wouldn't wish that night to my worst enemy. I am suicidal and no darkness I experienced before or since was as bad as that night. The coming down part I had not read about. I had no idea how important that was. I always assumed that coming down from a high made me feel sad just because it was over. I didn't understand at all how the brain worked. My friend had to hold my hand the whole evening and tell me, repeatedly, that this was the effect of the drug, that it wasn't me, that it was going to pass and that I was going to be fine. I survived that night somehow but I don't know if I could again. I never ever ever want to experience that feeling again. Ever.

And the day after, taking St. Johns Wort. Important not to mix St. Johns Wort with E or other meds as it is a natural MAOI, which is why it helps a lot with the come down

One of the most comprehensive & informative videos on MDMA! Grate Work.
I have fibromyalgia and for more then 10 year now. Very recently I tried MDMA with two friends in a house setting. For 6 hours, I was pain free. The following 3/4 weeks after that I had a pain reduction of more then 50%. increased stamina, better sleep and lower stress. I tried MDMA because I wanted to calm my anxyiety. I did not expect the pain free side effect at all. My fysio therapist could not believe the reduction of my muscle tention after the session. He said it was like working on a different body. The problem with having fibro, anxyiety, depression and ptsd is that every single one of them feeds the other in a circle. MDMA broke that circle bij calming or removing them giving me a small vacation from my chronic pain and allowing my body to remember how my body feels when it does not have my illnesses. It did a bit of a reset since my body literally thinks my miserable state is the normal baseline and it constantly returns to it. I will take this every once in a while for relaxation and a medical agenda. Any and all legal medications my gp prescribed for me over the years have worked short term or not at all. There are several drugs that should be re-explored for their medical use instead of demonised as an evil thing.
Back in the day my mate and I ran into a group of people loosely connected with MAPS who introduced us to Mr. Shulgin and pharmaceutical quality MDMA. My first dose was on my 40th birthday (1997) with friends and a playlist of music that encompassed modern classics and the results were absolutely stunning. (Other than the depression two days later which we knew was coming so was prepared for.) After that experience I came to believe that every American adult should do 125 mg of MDMA once a year as I'm pretty sure we'd have a better, kinder and gentler(tm) society. I've also tried to repeat that experience but access is hard and I will not buy off the club scene as only the fates know what's in *that* stuff. I have had the pleasure of repeating this experience twice since and I miss it as it is one of the very best 4-hour experiences a human can have. Like I said, once a year - every adult.

Great video overall but there’s some points that are incorrect. Shulgins and other psychopharmacologists did not oppose recreational use of mdma they even endorsed it. What they opposed was irresponsible use of any drug as well as prohibition. Recreational use did not cause the government to schedule mdma, the government not wanting people to be able to freely use substances that have known medical value, and the government wanting to be able to throw people in prison is why it was scheduled
That was a fire intro.
Amazing video !! I have struggled with MDMA usage over the past few months, and I feel like I have done my research and learned a lot about the drug now. I am not planning on taking it for a while now. But I still have friends who are interested in trying it, but I keep hearing from people and reading some places that there is a chance that your body just simply can’t handle it. And I am not trying to green light a drug to my friends that might have a chance of killing them. So my question is if this is true or not that there is a chance that your body just simply can’t handle the drug ?

I would say i am doing Very well thanks for asking. currently and throughout its been mellow and just an extremely positive experience where everything feels right for lack of a better word. to your questions the answers would be yes, yes and no? i mean definitely no to recreational use.😇
im willing to pay $1000 for any therapists if its available , the use if stimulants like Vyvanse its more on the manic side unlike MDMA, also all SSRI's are horrible with lots of side effects , I know why its band because it does cure faster
What would make it NOT work for someone? A family member tried it with friends when in college, and everyone else was definitely affected by it but she was not. The same happened when she tried LSD with the same group of friends in college. She said there was no difference in the way she felt, and no hallucinations or anything. Also, interestingly, when she has dental work done, Novocain only lasts about 15 minutes before it's ineffective. No one seems to know why.
I've been a recent user of MDMA/XTC and I can only tell that I'm a better person after I took it first time. I don't need the drug anymore to feel good about myself to interact more with people, and to be a better human, because I have the memory of an experience of joy that lasts more than the drug effect. For me MDMA was therapy and I wish I had known this before. My life could be way better - but better late than never. I personally don't see why it should not be controlled and allowed since it does not do at all worse side effects than alcohol - also it's a regulated drug.
what would you characterize as "too much" usage of mdma? 5-6 times a year is too much?
Going from Piperonal, you can react it with nitroethane under basic conditions, then, react it with an acid to produce 3,4-methylenedioxy-β-nitrostyrene, which can be reduced to 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine, a simple formylation will then yield you 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine
The fact that this video is demonetized, tell us something about the current state of society
Attachment disorders are serious and difficult to treat. Might MDMA be effective in it's treatment given it's tendency to generate a sense of connection? Or is the inability to feel connected the root cause of attachment disorders?

it's my opinion that early attachment wounds cause the alexithymia to develop as a coping mechanism for not being able to trust the caregiver with our big feelings so we learn to bury them and forget how to even percieve them, but we can again!

An interesting question crossed my mind at 16:23 - if MDMA were amplifying the mechanism behind the placebo effect, how would we know?

Placebo is just being able to convince your brain of something. MDMA makes your brain literally function differently and it's way more susceptible to any input, making it easier to convince. I would argue that even trying to separate these two concepts is meaningless. What MDMA does to you after it's physical effects wear off is essentially the same thing as placebo. MDMA just makes you more susceptible to it. You have to use it in a setting which is therapeutic to you, otherwise it's literally just increased brain activity. If you're not altering your state of mind during that increased brain activity then nothing will change afterwards.
I would love to see if taking this once a year, in January, would help to train my brain to stop getting depressed every winter. It seems like a perfect fit.

im a recovering polyaddict and ai/neuroscience student, I largely agree with your video and analyis. I think drugs should be completely decriminalized and the effects of current recreational drugs further studied. For me personally MDMA has had two seemingly contradictory effects. It's both gotten me to open up my shell more and try to make more friends, but it's (and similar substances) abuse has also made this more difficult. I believe for most people (not necessarily me) this could be helped by decreasing the stigma against it and providing it primarily in proper doses and settings. I do have some issues with your characterization of the chemical action of both recreational and pharmaceutical (SSRI) drugs. I think their pharmacological effects have been stated with too much certainty in terms of how directly they impact your mood. For instance, I believe a recent study (Moncrieff et al. 2022) found no relationship between lowered serotonin and depression. Same thing for norepinephrine/dopamine (although it does seem to have a role, which serotonin might as well, it's much more complicated than much of popsci makes it seem).

I think the pharma companies pushed the low serotonin is the root cause of depression angle to sell SSRI's.
My take on MDMA is that it is completely underappreciated. a lot of the stimulant abuse with methamphetamine addicts or Adderall addicts can be treated with it as well. They need to introduce programs for addicts to get therapy with the effect of it I know it sounds far off but MDMA is a lot like those stimulants but because it is serotonergic it does not have the dopamine psychotic part of it. Yes repeated uses causes tolerance but that what makes it so much better than other stumulants, it slows down in its response and cant be redosed really effectively 24 hours in.

I've had one friend that got hooked on mdma as a tween/teen, and now his brain is extra hardwired for addiction. The folks who do it in moderation, 1~2 a year, are ~normal.

@@Anne-yh6yn you assert your ignorance. While outside factors - like the presense and availability of drugs, and seeing its use - always play a role, one's own disposition may quickly become immaterial upon use. I assert that the human brain actively grows and develops until about the age of 25. Use of drugs at half that age will, typically, burn a pleasure seeking pathway into the brain. Regular use will then scar that path in without a chance to heal, forming an addiction to nuerochemical dumping activities, esp drug use.

getting addicted to anything already “hardwires” you like for example, getting addicted to cigarettes, makes you more likely to get addicted to something of a similar nature, because you have already developed those addictive tendencies
First drug i ever did. Best experience ever
I think mdma is helping with perception of (my personal) true reality. The fullness of the emotional states experienced with logical comprehension of what I would like for my life and what is possible thru natural laws of the universe & mind. I have moved thru traumatic emotions with love and full acceptance of the life i am blessed with! …. If that makes sense lol.
Its approved here where I live In Alberta for therapeutic use legally
Mdma is AMAZING. ❤
most certainly more helpful than EMDR
Took E at a pace of roughly between 3-5 doses, sometimes 8 per weekend, just about every weekend, for 10 years. After 15 years of use, it just quit working. Now it just gives me a really bad taste in my mouth, dry mouth, and makes me feel warm. There is absolutely ZERO fun or desire to ever take it again. Every year or sometimes longer, I will try a dose or two and nothing. Dont know if its the quality of modern stuff, or my brain just says NO. It was amazing while it lasted.

If this drug were ever allowed for recreational use, like marijuana, people would greatly benefit and not be at risk because it would be more moderated and not given at dangerous doses. I think it would even help lower the amount of people that use this drug but aren't aware of the risks and don't know how much is too much.

I tried MDMA back in college and took about 200 mg, didn’t know I was supposed to split the dose, I had also taken Xanax plus had been drinking all night and I had been taking a ton of caffeine while studying. To top it all off I had smoked a joint somewhere in between 😅 I remember MDMA made me feel free, all my insecurities had faded, I felt like I could truly be the best version of me. Sadly the other drugs counteracted my experience and I had a panic attack. Now I can’t enjoy other substances from this negative experience. Because I freak out that I’m not in control.

(it was like a book, every page was a different reallity(they were looking 100% real and logical etc) and sometimes pages were changing so fast my brain couldn't keep up and so on... It was horrible). Since, I can not use any drug because, in the second I start to feel something, it throws me back to that horrible trip or something. It was a looong long time ago. I truly wish everyone could experience this at least once in their life. It's the most therapeutic thing I've ever experienced. I wish society didn't stigmatize this stuff. It's profound. If I could, I would like to experience it once every few years at least. Luckily I had all my experiences before the fentanyl problem. This is why I wish we could overcome the war on drugs and take away power from the illicit black market. Society, our country should embrace it and control it. It legitimately helped me feel like I was able to rewire parts of my brain that have been so F'ed up throughout my teens & early 20's. I was able to bond with many of my friends and be there for them as they expressed what they wanted. It's genuinely something I feel sorry for anyone who never gets to try this experience at least once in their life.. Society has given so many things such a bad stigma. It's irritating.
Is it possible to get pharmacy grade mdma on the street?
If you take it too often, it loses it's magic. Harmless way to break down social barriers and feel temporary judge-lessness.

I once had a bad trip honestly, me and my friend were DJing some Hardtek at his place and I asked him if he had any MDMA and he went to grab a bag of it and just put it on his hand as he told me it was only like 1 hit, and after I licked it off his hand he said actually that was probably 2 hits or 2 and a half hits. I kinda silently panicked and just kept DJing I remember just feeling my legs were kinda flimsy and there was a cold draft in the room even though I was wearing a hoodie, and I felt super cold and shivering and I remember just stepping out to smoke a cigarette and that's when I noticed the Waves of Euphoria rushing up and down my back and I had cotton mouth, and I was super scared, I dunno why I just remember just telling him I'm uncomfortable and I put on a Jungle Mix on the CDJs and talked to him about random horrible stuff about my life to calm myself down and hoping the waves would die down but I failed to realized I was stuck like that until the next day of constant euphoria waves rushing up and down my back, I couldn't go with the flow and was fighting it the entire time. It wasn't until we went to get something to eat in the car, as we were coming back from McDonalds at 7am I saw the forest we were at was super foggy and the sun was shinning through the trees I started to feel comfortable and the music as well too made the whole drive just me sinking and melting in my seat, until we got back and I tried to sleep in cold sweats in my hoodie and a blanket listening to trance.

I meant to put that as a comment not a reply to yours. I will reply to your comment. Most of the time when you 1st take it and you feel the proper effects of it you probably won’t want to take it for a week or so. If however you do take it with your friends in 2 days It will have almost the same affect as the first time. If you take it five days later it will have the same affect as the first time.
"Depression" from the days after comes mainly from how hard you pushed your body with acitivity, lack of water, poor food. In therapeutic settings this is almost never reported. You can feel a little blank, but is that really depression? It's not sadness. I think it's just that your habits have been programmed away, and you don't have that wheel of habits constantly spinning, habits you have grown accustomed to and think is normal and necessary to "function normally"
