This is Why You Roll Worse against White Belts in BJJ

Спорт

Are you a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu who feels better when they roll with a Higher Belt?
This is the question I received from Brianda who asked,
" I've been training for four months and I know I'm improving a lot (everybody tells me), but when I roll with white belts. Why do I feel like I can't do anything? When I roll with higher belts everything goes better and I can practice all the movements and submissions I've learned, is it normal?
In this Chewy ramble video I discuss this common situation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. When it boils down to it this is caused by a couple things.
A higher belt (Blue Belt, Purple Belt, Brown Belt, Black Belt) is in much better control of the roll and is much more relaxed. And oftentimes higher belts will play down a little bit during BJJ training to allow the newer students to move around and attempt their techniques a bit.
This relaxed state is usually fueled by the fact that the higher belt can finish the roll and gain the upper hand at any point.
In contrast you might roll worse against a White Belt. This is because a white belt does not have the security of being more advanced technically. So, instead they are fighting life and death when pitted against another beginner during a Brazilian Jiujitsu class.
The roll then takes on a much more aggressive nature and makes it more difficult to execute techniques.
I go into more detail in the video and share a few stories. But in short, yes this is a normal situation.
If you're running into this as a BJJ White Belt. I hope the video is helpful!
Thanks!

Lol I've noticed that ground fighting especially isn't very intuitive except for using strength for resisting whatever the other guy is trying to do and hoping you get lucky. Anything other than that requires training to ground fight. Without that you really have no choice other than getting off the ground.

The reason is always one: "Because they let you!!" A purple can really destroy a white belt to the point that he is unable not just to make a technique, but to the point that the white belt will be unable to move. Im training BJJ 5-6 months and if u have a basic IQ level, it's obvious that the colour belts let us try stuff because they want to help us white belts to improve. This is not only helping us, but them as well because it's a great way to try defences to our mediocre offences with safety and see if they work.

There are other factors than belt color…age, weight, prior experience in other grappling. Sometimes a purple. May not be able to handle a white belt. I am a blue belt and I’m quite a bit older. A young guy with wrestling experience may well get the better of me.

It is crazy to believe that as a white belt you would be able to submit a brown belt. If you are having difficulties submitting a white belt it goes without saying that submitting any colored belt is almost a mission impossible. I honestly find success in small things when rolling with colored belts; not getting submitted 4 times in 3 minutes, not losing 17:0 in first 2 minutes then getting submitted and so on and so on. :) I still love it. Still learning. Every role is a positive one

This is true in decent gyms... but there are a few gyms around here that, if you pay them for a month or two they just hand you a blue belt. I showed up to one of those Gyms (didn't know the pay to progress scheme yet) because a buddy of mine was going there, he was a limp noodle and a blue belt. I wrestled for 14 years so I knew how to use leverage to my advantage, along with some basic (probably poorly performed) subs just from screwing around with submissions and watching too much MMA. This guy at the gym was a "black belt" after just 2 years of training, and I knew him from wrestling because I had went against him in tournaments before. He was a pretty horrible wrestler, but he had only wrestled for 3 years so you cant expect high quality in 3 years. Needless to say, he wasn't any better at BJJ and it wasn't because he was going easy on me, as after 3 minutes he was panting/exhausted and I was only going about 40-50% like the coach told us to. Seeing this, his coach had me go against him again at the end of training, starting in his guard (giving the black belt the better position over someone not even a white belt??) The coach told him not to allow me to pass guard, and take any submission I gave him. Needless to say I didn't get submitted, and passed guard pretty quickly. Turns out their coach promoted everyone based on amount of time trained, not on their abilities or performance. 5 of the coach's 6 Black belts had gotten their black belts in 2 years.

There's a load of 3 stripe white belts still trying to choke when you have them mounted and they hold on sub attempts for far too long when they're nowhere near landing it. The professor there just got his first stripe on his brown belt, then went to a seminar about a month later and was awarded his black belt. It can't be good for BJJ that there's club's like this. I go to a Roger Gracie Academy now and everyone there is very good for their rank and the professor won't leave you alone until you can demonstrate what he's teaching perfectly.

It kills me when lower belts brag about what they do against higher belts, as if they weren't totally allowing it. The truth is, the inexperienced never know the mindset of the more experienced grappler, whether they are working on something specific, rolling to see what the lower belt can see/do, or just rolling to get the exercise in and stay conditioned. I hope they stick it out long enough to realize the reality of the situation.

If a colored belt just instantly dominates you, you won't really learn anything. If they let you get some control in certain positions and give you the opportunity to advance or maintain control you can learn how to apply that to rolling with someone who is closer to your experience level. It's all about letting you learn in the moment.

Good topic.. I've been in both situations.. as a newbie fighter I sometimes thought I was actually dominating higher belts and with time I realized the best way to learn is to flow with your rolls. Use little to no strength and try to gain better positions technically. Nowadays I hardly use any energy, even if I'm grappling with a more technical opponent. It just lets me see what they do and adopt their techniques. BJJ is a serious life changer. 9 years into my journey and I still get to feel like a white belt with some people, it's fascinating.

Totally. Two white belts going at it, it's competitive. When it's a higher belt, there's no competition. The higher belt has nothing to prove, doesn't feel the need to "compete" with you, because they already KNOW they'd beat you every time.

Hey chewy, just wanted to say thanks for all the videos, I always enjoy your two cents and you always make a lot of sense. Also, to reflect on this video, I would add that there's the "code". What I mean by that is that it can feel more bumpy and hard to flow through positions with a white belt because they are less used to the transitions. Rolling creates habits white belts are not used to which can make you feel like it's not going the way it's supposed to. Of course this is tightly mixed with the fact that higher ranks will most likely go easy on you and play along.

This is a very good topic. What I've seen is: white belts will try as hard as they can to execute the technique they learned that day. Conversely, their opponents (also white belt) will fight tooth and nail to prevent it. This often leads to nothing getting accomplished or the stronger white belt winning. There's nothing wrong with this, but what I found helpful was to write, draw or memorize a learned technique and try it again later to see if it fit my tool box of techniques. Because eventually, the tool box becomes full and you begin to pick out which tools work best for you.

This is so true!!!! I am a one-stripe white belt (who has had experience training years ago but paused for a few years so I humbly started over), and it's much easier to roll with more experienced white belts, or higher belts. It's a much smoother roll with more defined technique/foundations. It's much easier to detect the mistakes I've made, and I end up getting better. When I roll with newer white belts, I don't mind (because we all started there); however, I actually always end up getting knocked around and bruised. Newer white belts use all muscle and struggle a lot, and when I roll, even as a white belt I'm at 10-40% (depending on who I roll with). Rolling with newer white belts, my technique is much worse. Occasionally I am able to get a submission (and am usually able to pass guard, get in mount, etc.). It's just a rough ride though. I just wanna say 'dang, slow down,' but I don't wanna 'coach' at the same time or make them think I'm just trying to beat them. I am a bit older (in my 40s) and don't necessarily like the extra rough rolling. This video is inspiring me to talk to my professor about it. Thanks.

A similar problem I've encountered as a higher level white belt.: A lot of Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu instruction works on assumption that your opponent knows what they're doing. For example, your other video this week, that shows how to do a Kimura off of a standard guard pass. When I roll with Blue Belts, I don't win, but I roll BETTER. I secure better grips, I do proper position transitions, and I set up Submission attempts properly. With lower white belts, it's not just that I can get away with more, but I'm reacting to someone moving 'against the rules'. They start rolling stupid, and I start rolling stupid back. I catch lots of submissions, but they're not submissions I should have, and I'm not working my fundamentals, and because they're going all power, I have to power back, frequently, my technique just isn't good enough to force them into 'conventional' patterns. What's the best way to get a good roll with a spazzy white belt, when you're a less spazzy white belt?

  • @micaylapresley

Ask the upper belts for advice, read articles, watch videos, keep refining your basics. Try and focus on one goal for a week or a month, like passing guard, or escaping mount. Once you start meeting your goals, you'll notice the rolls going your way more and more. You'll start ending up on top, you'll stop having to defend submissions as often and start attacking more. Making tiny positional goals helped me improve a lot and I still go back to those same goals to prepare for competitions. I hope this helps :)

  • @CaptainThorne

The secret to rolling with spazzy white belts is to not use jiujitsu on them. Like you said most advanced techniques are really just responses to jiujitsu style movement. So if they aren't moving in that way then the set ups for the techniques dont appear. Plus when someone is really spazzy (moving as fast as possible with maximum strength) you need to match their energy in order to hit jits techniques on them. But at those levels of spaz you lose control which makes it tricky to hit techniques safely. The solution here is to not use jiujitsu on them, beat them with proper base and control. When people spaz like that if you just slow down and let them spaz into bad positions then you can get top control and slowly crush them to death as they blow all their energy trying to get out. Look at it like a constricting snake. Just pressure cook them, and as they make mistakes spazzing around: you tighten your hold.

Im a white belt (I am 15 years old) and I occasionally roll with colored belts. I knew since the beginning that they would go slow on me. They would do this primarily due to my weight class, age, and belt. I enjoyed it because I was able to tryout new techniques, and could potentially use those techniques in the future. Whenever I roll with white belts, the majority of the time they would go all out. As a result, this provided me with a challenge and I was one step closer to being able to kick ass. I remember the first few times I rolled with the higher belts that I became upset. I was upset because these guys were constantly going easy on me and my instructor even told them to go easy. I hated whenever my opponents never went 100% because their reasoning for the most part was that I am a kid. I have learned to embrace it as time went on as I can practice techniques. So I guess this is my little story regarding this girls situation

Upper belts use me as a rest stop when they're too tired to roll with other upper belts and then lazily don't defend against me until I get too far. Sometimes I would trash talk them to make them try again and then I'd quickly get the crap beat out of me.

I started three weeks ago. I noticed this right off the bat. I was rolling with the higher belts just to seek opportunity to learn. Sure enough that wouldn't let me submit but instead they let me defend myself more. And if I clearly left myself open they took them opportunity and that alone has been my best teacher.

A good school won't give you a belt till you earn it. With jiu jitsu it's not like Karate where you just perfect forms until you earn your next belt. If you don't have a lot of time to train or you just aren't progressing past a certain point I could see someone being stuck as a white belt for a long time. If you train 3-4 days a week and take private classes you could make it in 6-7months. It's not exactly something to rush for though because that blue belt paints a Target on you.

Tyler Kelly I would just say that I trained a lot of no gi so in a gi I'm technically a white belt. I would say it depends on the competitiveness of the roll, against no stripe-2 stripe white belts I would let them work a little or just focus on a different side of your game than your A-game. Focus on getting good grips and cross collar chokes and Ezekiel's and get familiar with the gi game. I have a similar issue since my gym promotes almost exclusively on showing up for designated promotion days and I'm often busy on those days so I'm a 3 stripe white belt who taps most of the blue belts.

Correct me if im wrong, but isn't one aspect of that also, that white belts are a little more spastic, chaotic and random, whereas after you've been doing it for a little bit of time there's a bit more synchronization and cadence. Like if you were learning a language; trying to implement a technical aspect of a language would be very difficult with someone else who also isn't very fluent in that language, but an experienced speaker will fall into that flow with you and understand what you're saying.

I think this is it. At least for me. I got my first sub on a blue belt who definitely did not want to get submitted. It was the spasiest keylock ever. Another blue belt let out a big "For fucks sake" when I got out of an arm bar into side control. It's a little hard to believe he was letting me get out when he was audibly so frustrated with himself.

2:43..thats exactly how it is at my MMA gym. On BJJ nights during the week we have a brown belt named Todd come in and help teach our fighters and students. And he is always going at about 30 or 40 percent and is just so damned experienced that he lets you roll and make you work to pass a guard and half asses a submission. I uh...talked a little shit and was playing with him and had the confidence that I could maybe get a submission...needless to say when we rolled he made me feel like a day one white belt 😂 taught me a big lesson in humbleness. I think a part of what can make a white belt difficult to maneuver is that they are so unpredictable. When you are with a higher belt they are in positions that you've learned, they are doing moves that you've learned. You may not have the proficiency to stop or counter them but you understand what's up. Where as the white belt maybe doesn't have a clue so they are doing moves that aren't really moves, or they are in positions that just don't make sense. And it leaves you wondering what the hell am I supposed to do with this guy it's so awkward.

I just realized last night that I play up/down to my opponents. I was just promoted to 4 stripe white belt 2 days ago and at my school, the professor doesn't let upper belts perform any arm bars on white belts until 4 stripes. So last night I rolled against 3 different purple belts and none of them tapped me out, yet I rolled with a newer white belt and he tapped me twice (once with an armbar). This is a common theme for me, where the upper belts don't usually tap me but the white belts do. Should I be turning it up against the newer white belts?

Hi, I've been a white belt for 7 months now. I don't train often and I don't have the urge to win every freaking time in sparring. So, normally I spend my time defending and half of the times I end tapping out. I'm so relaxed when fighting that lately young girls are being sent to spar with me because "I'm not that brutal" :-) My question is: Am I still progressing if I keep rolling 'overly gentle'?

  • @lanem4304

    @lanem4304

    6 жыл бұрын

I would transition to side control and if you have them in a cradle, just push them sideways away from you so you have their back positioned to you; and they are on their shoulder. From there, you have a series of both arm/shoulder and choke attacks. Overall, it is just a really good control position (officer control), especially for those newer to BJJ where it allows you to go slower due to the control you have in that position and work on the series of chokes, armbar entries and Kimura that is available from there. When I work with newer BJJ students, I like to stress the importance of control to them (maintaining their base/maintaining their control); not necessarily the "submission". Far too many newer students sacrifice control and position to try and get a submission; which allows their partner to escape/sweep etc and the work you did to get to that advantageous position is wasted. IMO, you become really good at control and position, the submissions then come more easily.

This is true in reverse too though...now, I've trained no-Gi a ton, but in Gi I'm just a 1-stripe white belt (mainly because I'm in college and I can only really train at my home school where I hold rank over summer break, if at all). There's this 3-stripe blue belt at my gym. She's a smaller girl, sweet as can be, and incredibly technical. I'm a much taller and lankier wrestling-style top player. In our rolls, I have to tone down my strength because I could just wrestle and smash her, and she has a very flow style anyways. But she in turn makes me think far more about the intricacies of my technique because I'm forced to turn my strength down. Often our rolls become stalemates but with an incredible amount of position changes. Anyways, I thought I'd just offer a somewhat unique perspective on this. I really love rolling with her too :) as much as I like a good ole fashioned wrestling scrap, that almost-flow style of Jits is really fun to play too.

Good points. First, you are a grappler, even stepping on the mat only for 8 months in BJJ, because of your wrestling. So 9 times out of 10, you will be better than most white belts just starting out with no background. Second, as for the guy who is teaching you with incorrect information, I will just question it, not in an aggress way, but more in a "well I thought this was the way to go to, because the coach said this one time" or whatever. Basically showing him that you know your stuff. As for the culture of the place, thats different, if the instructor is letting him take the lead and teach the ways he teaches, thats something I wouldn't touch, but think about if its worth staying at the school or not.

I've been training for a little over 16 months but although I don't necessarily think it's easier to roll with blue belts I think I roll better with them. when I roll with other white belts at my academy it's more like a brawl rather than a match and I can't really anticipate what they will be doing because they don't know what they will be doing. But when I roll with blue belts I can predict what they are going because they will probably do something that they should be doing, this gives me the chance to do better set ups and what not.

Jordan Chan When you're standing up with them keep your hips and center of gravity low. Don't let them get under you. Turn it into a wrestling match and shoot for single and double legs. Don't play the clinch under and overhook game cos that's risky with them. They love their armbars..drill armbar escapes and drill escapes from judo side control. Their weaknesses should be leg locks. Leg lock them all day. If you don't know anything about leg locks focus on getting your legs in a good ashi garami position first before trying to finish them. Also chokes work well against anyone. Put different chokes on them all day long

They hate when we angle our hips back in classic BJJ grappling stance. It's illegal in Judo, as is grabbing the legs. They expose their backs when going for throws. When going for o-goshi (the hip toss) just step around and do a valley drop. They also expose their backs and turtle up on the ground. Judo tends not to spend longer than 30 seconds on the ground, so they're used to surviving there until getting stood up again.

For me it is easier to trust higher belts they actually understand what I am doing, where my limbs, balance and power is even if I don't have a clue what the hell I am doing. On the other hand I don't trust lower belts, whites and blues are able to adjust and manage these things correctly. I don't believe they are always able to understand there's two person and it's dangerous. I am not myself always able to understand and monitor consciously what the hell they are doing. Where their limbs are and if there's something potentially fatal. I'd say "being a 'higer' blue belt is.. exciting".

What about if I actually roll better with higher belts? My teacher has told me several times that I roll way better with him than with anyone else. I definitely agree, its like I reach a new level when I'm going against someone way better

Is it weird for me I like rolling with white belts and low level blue belts. With the higher belts it freaks me out lol I want to completely disengage stand and strike. I’m a newbie white white belt have some grappling ( I was a catch wrestling “dummy”) experience and boxing origin. Plus had many fights younger because I was small but not so much small now

a white belt win: i escaped to side control on a purple belt that's 30 pounds lighter...oh, and it was mostly because they let go of a back control and it was their 5th roll. But side control... :))

I’ve realized as a white belt that if I get the real upper hand on a black belt or brown or even purple belt that it’s likely because they let me. I’ve changed my method of not trying to go for submissions as much and just try to pressure grapple and not get submitted as much. Coming from a wrestling background I love doing that and I usually notice the more tired they get the more I can work on my techniques. Hopefully by the time I’m a higher belt it will pay off and I can start tapping these guys lol

Chewjiujitsu. Been training for two years, I'm a blue belt. I'm having issues with my fingers healing. It's gotten so back that in any given day 1-3 fingers on each hand is injured...enough where it impacts my focus. They don't seem to be getting better, even with less gripping. What can I do to minimize the problem? Help!

    1. rest until it heals 2. use tape so it doesn't get bad again alternatively, do more no-gi at least until it's fully healed at this point you gotta take a break also maybe see a doctor if it stays bad after a couple weeks of rest

Same thing with striking. Someone who's been doing it 5 years+ sparring with some new dude with a few months. That one guy can go hard as hell and the experienced one can just use like jabs mainly some crosses and leg kicks just a lot more and hard and he'll think he had him but he was barely using the full range of his skills. Floyd could beat most people with just his jab alone.

Lol!! First , I do admit I’m getting better but when I roll with my professor; my main emphasis is to get better and to make sure I roll hard and never quit and give up ! My professor when he rolls with me he goes easy and hard but I know he’s letting me work ! Just last week we rolled and he could of choked me out 5 times but he resisted because he wants me to work ! Makes sense! If he wanted to he could of choked me out the first time but he wants me to work and keep fighting ! But, I’m never going in there to submit a black belt or brown belt ! Be humble and enjoy the journey ; we are not supposed to join bjj ti brag about our rolling sessions ! It’s not proper etiquette

Theres this one woman in the gym and we were doing rolling and she is a one stripe white and she honestly believes that she should be a purple belt. All of us in the gym are conscience that she is 1 new and 2 a woman so we take it easy so i'll let her pass my guard so will all the other guys and she publicly said "when am i getting my purple belt. I tapped you you you you i passed your guard and your guard" i just sorta sat there and let it play out its all sorted now tho😂

I'm an engineer. I am acutely aware of all the things I don't know. If anything, I get frustrated sometimes when upper belts just let me do stuff - I don't learn much. I like the guys who make me pay for stupidity - they're better teachers. For example, I have improved my don't-get-armbared-like-a-stupid-fuck game thanks to them. They can also diagnose your actual weak-points rather than opine on how you do in a basically fictitious scenario.

The first girl I rolled with in BJJ complained to the teacher, "He's going easy on me because I'm a girl!!!" No, it was actually because we were both white belts, and I wanted to learn how the techniques are supposed to feel. It pissed me off that she bitched to the teacher about me. At the time, she had my back and was trying a rear-naked choke, so I just grabbed her wrists and pulled her arms apart. I couldn't believe how easy it was to do because her arms were so thin. I realized I was so much stronger than her that I didn't even need BJJ. It left a bad taste in my mouth about rolling with women.

Its funny I was very new at BJJ and first time sparring with a girl who was actually higher than me I was rolling with her and I outweighed her and had strength advantage by a bit and I could tell when she was going for moves, I kept blocking/countering them but I didn't have enough skill to actually beat her so It just became this stalemate where neither showed any real dominance. Honestly I couldn't tell who was taking it easy on who. I know it was probably frustrating for her but had I not had that strength weight I am pretty sure she would have schooled me and If she could have I really wished that she did so I knew where I actually was in skill.

LunaticReason, Good point yet all you hear about in BJJ classes is that "size doesn't matter." It certainly does against lower belts and MMA has weight classes for a reason. One thing I find irritating is that there are women only classes and workshops, so the female students can only roll with other women if they choose. Yet, if a guy prefers to roll with guys, he's considered a problem.

  • @LunaticReason

Nepthu, not to be sexist or anything but I think there are women only classes due to their confidence level and comfort with rolling with males. I could see why considering some women may be there primarily for self defense against sexual assault so gyms may not want to scare away these women. I agree it's a bit of a double standard but that is the reality of the situation and they aren't considering how detrimental it can be for someone's personal development when your constantly paired with people constantly below your level which should I believe should only occur if your meant as an opportunity to teach/mentor.

It's one woman - not women in general. I roll with a few women at my gym and it's fine. Try again with someone else. After all, if you roll with one guy and he sucks, you're not going to just say "ok all guys suck" just because of one guy, right? I do understand that there are less women doing BJJ so less chances to roll with them, your sample size is small and maybe yes on average there might be more who are whiny like the one you encountered. But it doesn't mean all women. They're individuals just like you and me, and you gotta try before making generalized statements.
