My dad bought his in 03 and it was one of the first 10,000 batch and first one sold in our area. The dealership threw him a party and everything. Fast forward, it's the end of 2018. My dad has 392,788 miles on the ORIGINAL ENGINE and TRANSMISSION. still commutes 60+ to work every day. They don't make them like they used to!

I have an 04, original owner, closing in on 200k. Love my element! Honda hasn’t made anything since that has anything on this car! I wish they brought it back, maybe 8” longer and lose the suicide doors. Love the spartan easy to clean interior, and I don’t need a V6 with Honda’s fuel management/shutoff (and its associated problems).

I have been an automotive technician since 1976. I remember the first time that I saw and drove an Element. I was shocked as to how well the car performed. The Element is one of the most durable vehicles ever built.

The handling is a huge surprise for a car that looks like it has a high center of gravity. My other current cars are a 99 Miata, 02 Mini Cooper S, 00 BMW Z3 Coupe and a 77 Fiat 124 Spider convertible. I bought a first year Shoreline Gold EX-S with auto and that's still my only regret... The transmission. Never even checked out the manual even though my other cars are manuals. Duh. Needed transmission work on it this year after 200k miles and while looking for a repair shop found a Black 05 EX-S 5 spd (in great condition at a ridicuous price, my kind of deal) and the combination of the stick and the VTECH is almost unbelievable. This car is a hoot in traffic and on long trips. Point and shoot. The one gripe I have is the total crap seat material cracking on damn near every first generation one I've seen. Honda completely dropped the ball on that, especially when they never offered a seat cover for the top of the line side airbag models and want $1k to replace just the seat bottom cover.

Honda missed the boat when they discontinued this great Swiss Army knife of a vehicle.

One theory for the discontinuation of the Element is that the 2008 financial crisis essentially KILLED the new car market... ESPECIALLY for recreation-themed vehicles built for leisure (FJ cruiser/Element) versus necessity (camry/civic/etc). When you have the dominant CRV line, an established Pilot line, you gotta cut the excess at some point. Unfortunately for those of us that appreciate it now... Honda probably viewed the Element line as an expendable "liability"... not a breadwinner.

They missed the boat when the made it a 4 banger that made it slower and get worse fuel mileage than a V6, swiss army chit should be able to tow more then 1500 lbs too...

I own this exact car and they'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands when I die. LOVE it. I call it my steel tent -- does everything I ask it to, and more. Thanks for the review. Honda should reintroduce a new version targeted to those who bought it in the first place -- older folks who know quality and frugality when they see it.

I love mine. Coin tray broke 3 times on me right away. I keep it in the glove box. The ride is very bumpy. You can feel it if you drive across a painted line in the road. The turning radius is nice and tight, smaller than my wife's civic. Still love it. Easy to find in a parking lot when you come out of a store. Good ground clearance for deep snow.

Love my Element definitely my favorite car I've ever owned and this thing is BULLETPROOF! I've got 375000 miles on it so far and it still drives and gets the same mpg as it did when I bought it! I feel like it will get 1000000 miles!

I cant find a cargo cover for a 2003 honda element😢😢😢😢

Been driving mine since I was 16, now 27. I love it, my wife loves it, my bike loves its, and my dad missed it so he bough another one! 175K miles and still going like a champ. Plus, people are amazed at the room!. I even was crossing into the us and the border agent was stunned at the room and sat in the back!

I love my red 2005 Element with over 200,000 miles on it. Still runs great. It's been my foot locker, travel auto and warehouse for my business. Yes, I'm a Boomer woman and this was my best auto ever!

My 2004 Honda Element saved my life in spectacular end over end roll over due to my passing out at the wheel due to prescription medication.❤️

Yup. Family member has the 2007. 420,000+ miles with the same engine and transmission system, and it still runs great. They recently improved the valves and parts of the undercarriage, and the car performs surprisingly well. Very much recommended if you take care of it.

Mine has 192,000 miles and it's very encouraging to read so many people saying how they've got well over 300K on their Elements because to the guy below who wrote "pry my Element from my cold dead hands" that pretty much goes for me as well.

Use the search site "all of craigs" and do a search using key words ELEMENT and WHEELCHAIR and see if one pops up. Eventually you'll find one, way easier/cheaper to buy one already converted than undertaking that expense yourself. Make sure you subscribe and like us on Facebook. I am T9 para and love this car because I can sit in the driver seat and load my wheelchair easily behind me. I fold the rear seats up, but if you don't need them (or at least the one behind you) for passengers, I would recommend removing rear seat(s) so you see out rear side windows. If your wheelchair is rigid, not folding, or you want to load it without any disassembly to save time and energy, another option is to tilt it into the back and literally roll it in. My wheelchair has 25" wheels and a medium high seat back, and I can easily do this when wearing my braces, and then hold onto the composite roof and shuffle to the driver seat. The composite material stays cool in summer and warm in winter. But unloading from the rear is tricky: I have to do a somewhat controlled drop, and risk falling. Have mastered it now! Conversions are very expensive, and add quite a bit more weight so you get worse gas mileage. Check out freedommotors.com (yeah, not "around the corner" for you). My recommendations: for hand controls on the Element is the Veigel Classic II Commander (there is also a quad version), for steering the Veigel/MPD Palm Grip (doesn't require a counterbalance and is good for long trips), and definitely Veigel Pedal Guard. These recommendations are good even with somewhat limited hand function, offer easiest in/out for driver, allow conversion for able-bodied driver literally in a minute, and look as if they were OEM for the Element! Best wishes!

Im a wheelchair user and I have a 2007 bought it brand new. Best car I ever owned!

My 2004 has only 72,000 miles. I have been in greyhound rescue and would take out the seats and load 4 into it from the track to bring to our rescue site ! In all these years, I have only had to have the starter replaced. Does so well in the ice and snow. Last month, someone cut out and stole my catalytic converter, but luckily my insurance totally covered it. I dearly love this car! It feels so open with the large windows, etc. I am able to plug my iphone in . I will never give this up and have put it in my will for my oldest son.

The Element was one of the best cars ever made. I used to have a new 2003 EX, I traded it for an Accord in 2007. I still miss that car. It drove fun, audio system sounded better than many "premium" garbage audio systems Honda puts into their cars today. Interior utility was insane. Honda did not market this car properly, most dealers did not display them and never suggested them to customers. I was lucky to get one because my co-worker got one and gave me a ride, I loved the Element so much I bought one next month. I wish Honda came up with a new one. Most cars are boring these days.

Hands down best vehicle I've ever owned.

When my Honda Pilot was recalled for the damn airbags, the dealer loaned me a Honda Element. I instantly fell in love with it. This is the swiss knives of SUVs right here. So much fun to drive and you can definitely sleep confortably on this car if needed. Such an awesome car. The Element loaner from my Honda dealer had 300K miles!! Yet this thing drove like a brand new car. I love my 2007 Honda Pilot too. Such a great vehicle

I bought a 2003 brand new and I swore I'd drive it till the wheels drop off. Only problem, it's a bloody Honda. They're never going to drop off. Seriously, I love this car.

My grandma has one, she bought it brand new back in like 04 and still owns it today with a new engine, I've taken it on trips as well and I gotta say it's a versatile vehicle and quite fun to drive.

I bought my Element in 2004. I still have it. A little worst for ware but it has 192,000 miles on it. I had the front coil springs break on both sides but I did overload it many times. It was never meant for 1200 lbs plus driver. I wore out the tumbler in the ignition switch. The Honda dealer wanted about $900 to fix it, more if the doors where re-keyed. I said no way. I got a junk yard tumble cheap and replaced just the tumbler. Honda won't sell just the tumbler. I ground down the edges on my valet key, pried off the sides to retrieve the chip. I put my old chip in the new key that came with the tumbler. It works. Saved over $700. Mileage is nothing to brag about. About 20 mpg highway. I got a little better mileage burning Canadian no alcohol gasoline. Closer to 22. I have put studded snow tires on it every winter. Very good on snowy roads that way. So long as the snow isn't so deep the undercarriage doesn't drag too much it goes. Wish it had a little better ground clearance but for normal use the clearance is good. I had a little trouble with it bottoming out on gravel roads in middle on nowhere in Maine. It was never meant for serious off roading. At the time I bought it the runner up was the Ford Escape which was more money. No regrets.

I have owned over 10 of these and currently still own 2 of them and ALWAYS looking for another !!!

I bought a 2003 version and I had no idea it has something like 4 wheel drive or what the vehicle was capable of until a guy that used to sell them told me what I had and this winter is when I had my own experience.....I gotta say this car for me is a must have 😁

I owned one for 6 years. Took me places, created memories, and was pretty fun. Road noise aside this thing was fantastic.

I love my 04 Element! Had it for 5 or 6 months before I learned I could completely remove the sun roof! Had it for almost 2 years and just now learned watching this video that the seats fold up against the wall!!!! I've been taking them out every time!

I have an 03' and love it! Only 58000 miles on it and I am the original owner(yep...older than the target audience and female!). I have had the same problem with the seats ripping. Love the stereo and the AUX plug. Only pet peeve is the brakes grind for a few minutes when it has been raining or snowing. Yes, it is great in the snow! I hope Honda gets wise and brings it back!

All car brake rotors will rust immediately after a rain. What you are hearing is the rust rubbing off. This does not affect the brakes at all. Your rotors are bare metal and will get surface rust when they get wet. After a couple of stops, the rotors are polished again, and the noise goes away.

Love my 2003 that I bought in october of 2002. First and only car Ive bought new and paid off. Next one will be went Honda revives this amazing vehicle.

Not really.? I do love my 2007. But my 63 Bug was the best car ever. 30 mpg. You could roll it over on its top like a stranded lady bug and do repair and maintenance underneath.

Don't wait for them to bring it back, go find a good used one.

I have a 2005 Element with 194,000 miles. I do all of my own repairs. I've replaced the rear upper control arms for better alignment, the front right CV axle, the alternator, the master cylinder for the clutch...and regular maintenance like brakes, rotors and fluids. All of my repairs combined have cost less than $1000 over its life. Totally worth it. I'm about to move from California to North Carolina and I hope it makes it. If anything major needs to be fixed I'll just sell it off and move on, but I'll miss all of the fun I had in my E. Lots of camping, road trips and a lot of love.

It's orange and black with black seats, fog lights, roof rack, rear moon roof, 2 armrests, AWD, zero rust and looks nearly brand new. Even the engine looks new. I've owned a lot of different vehicles and this one is my favorite. If it had a little more power it would be a perfect vehicle.

Element owner here, i love the toaster. i use it for my biking and it never dies.

i have a 06 AWD bought it new i love this vehicle been all over the southwest on fire roads and a great trip up the pacific coast highway love my honda

there are no drawbacks. Seats adjust into 64 different positions, or just remove them. You can make a cargo van or anything you want. Sleep in it. Whatever. It's amazing.

Love my 03 EX Element! 290,000 miles. The "Swiss Army Knife" analogy is spot on, my brother coined ours to b "The Toaster". This car was our go to for our daughters club volleyball tournements across Washington & Oregon for many years, I wish I knew years ago about the spare tire cover turning into a table. Still driving it today, on our way to look at another one, 2011. Hoping Honda relaunches a new version and agreed with previous comments, you Love it or Hate it. We bought ours new in 2005. Our son, who was a teenager at the time, also referred to it as "The Toaster." He would refuse to be seen in it, as it wasn't "cool." Fifteen years and 240,000 miles later, it still runs like a champ. Far and away, the best car we've ever owned.

Great review! I havent seen anyone explain its features like that and show it! I never knew about the table, the seat belt or the reason for the back sunroof. Im glad I watched this vid!

I bought one at the suggestion of a friend. I looked high and low for a good one . I got a used car lot owner to take me to the auction and found one that had AWD 5 speed manual trans. I had him bid on it and won the bid. Love it so much . I put some Geneal grabbers on it a few supension parts and I expect it will last me 10 years. It is the perfect vehicle for me !! I just wish it had more overdrive since the speed limit went up to 70.

My 05 will cruise nicely at 80 but it is over 4000 rpm at this speed . Back when it was built the speed limit was 55 and at this speed rpms are pretty low. Having a 6th gear would be awesome but even though I know people in the transmission industry its not gonna happen unless I find some magic experimental transmission Im out of luck there.

Nice video! I've purchased 5 Elements over the past several years (2 for me, 2 for my son, and one for my sister-in-law). My current one is a 2008 with 330k miles. The upgraded seats in mine look great; however, my son's seats look terrible. I just ordered a set of the seat covers that you featured in this video. Thanks!

We own two 2005 Elements. LOVE them. One is the automatic front wheel drive - which we don't like as well - and the other is the all wheel drive stick shift. We have goats. We use ours to haul the goats and hay. We've also taken the stick shift on several cross country trips (Maine to CA and back.). Totally awesome. I am heart broken that they don't make them now.

Ah... the Element! The only car I've owned that I love more after every year. I keep trying to find something as versatile and nothing even comes close.

Good review. I'm a 2nd owner of mine and have had my 2007 for about 9 years. It has 170, 000 miles now and has been very reliable, with virtually no maintenance needed so far. Altho the clearance is low (9ish inches), the awd and good tires make going thru shallow creeks, etc. easy for hiking. I am very happy with the rubber floors, which are super practical for dogs. I usually keep my back seats up against the sides, which gives it a roomy interior and my 3 large dogs stretch out. I built a plywood box cover for a real tire, which rides in the very back by the hatch and serves as a couch (topped with a cushion) for 1 dog. I would disagree tho, about the handling. It is a tendency of tall vehicles like trucks, SUVs, and vans to be top heavy. I find centrifugal force effects handling on turns, and if you live in the country where racoons and deer dart into the roadway, it isn't possible to safely slam on the brakes. My previous Toyota Matrix handled much better under those challenging circumstances, but it didn't seem as roomy. Currently considering an AWD Subaru Outback as possible future replacement, which is known for sporty handling. I think agile handling can help one avoid a collision, and my Element's handling does not inspire that confidence in me.

I had a 2003, 07, and 10.. bought the 03 and 07 new.. threw a boat load of miles on them and sold them.. only kept the 2010 for 2 years then decided that I wanted a BMW.. love the Bimmer.. but will be looking for a 2007 or newer E as a second vehicle and I’ll keep it around a while. I have to say.. they are the best vehicles that I’ve owned. Very easy and cheap to own, and are fun to drive.

question: how many one-piece rod & reel combos can you hold in your BMW?

I have a 2009 Element SC which may very well be the love of my life. It only has 50k miles on it. I had the dog package installed some time after I bought it and removed the rear seats. (six dogs) I am the original owner. I had navigation installed and a better sound system. I also had remote start and an alarm system installed. I take care of this car better than I take care of me! I always get the regular maintenance done and keep records. The only thing I need is to get it painted. It would look and be like new. I plan to own this car for the rest of my life since they do not make them anymore. Not sure I could ever drive anything else.

does your will specify that the dogs take possession of the Element when you die?

I have one and I love it. Bought if brand new off the lot in 2003! I love my Ellie!

Thanks for doing this review. I’ve been thinking about buying this car as a “beater” for utility activities.

my Element is the smartest investment I ever made! I like seeing how much love people have for this vehicle. Its' definitely one of Honda's best (if not the best Honda ever made). Durable, convenient, unique, and strangely stylish!

On later models the seat belt was moved to the seat so that people in back can get out without the driver having to unbuckle

I too have a 2005 element ex, Although the Manual Transmission was offered there were not many available, Most were automatics which incedentially got 1 to 2 miles per gallon better than the Manual. Also the roof Rack was either a dealer or self install option. The Car was Manufactured in Marysville, Ohio. The Car Parts were 70 american made with 30% from across the Pond. Largest imported part was the transmission.

This video I just LOVE. I have a 2004 Element EX and mine also has the ESSENTIAL though extremely rare five speed manual transmission. An Element with a stick is a COMPLETELY different vehicle compared to one with an automatic. Being able to hold in a gear and the engine braking automatics just can't do make all the difference in a world for spirited driving especially in hilly areas on twisty roads. I love the comment about being a mix between a Hummer and a Mini Cooper. The Element is not really at all an off road vehicle because it lacks ground clearance and has no low range gearing since it's all wheel drive and not four wheel drive. But it's a GREAT dirt road vehicle and that includes dirt roads up and down actual mountains. My Element is a little mountain goat with lots of happy and fun experience in the mountains of West Virginia. I'm constantly watching for a later model low mileage stick shift Element to buy in case something happens to mine. I can't imagine ever wanting to own anything else for every day driving. Of course a pickup truck and a sports car would be nice to have as well. This video is excellent and pretty much right on except that her and now in early 2020 manual transmission Elements are not common at all but rather pretty difficult to find. If you like the video and are interested just bear in mind that all the fun is with the stick shift and just about everything that's great about an Element is ruined by the automatic transmission.

Agreed, I live just outside of DC where we get maybe 1-3 good snows a year. I make sure I take it out and she is a beast, no fear

They're great in the snow but if it gets deep enough it can bottom out. I'm in Maryland too.

The CR-V manual was introduced by popular demand in the second year of US sales (1998) along with the EX model, and an LX 2WD option. Yes, all 96 and 97 CR-V models were RT-AWD, and automatic. I just bought a CR-V, and I nerd out on that stuff.

Thanks for a very nice video. I have owned a new 2007 EX, which I replaced with a used 2008 Sx with 164k miles. It was one of the best vehicles Honda made. Sure, they could even make it better with a few more durable materials, but, man! still the Element rocks!! I want no other!

I just got mine. An 05 LX FWD (missed out on the 4x4) but the fwd drive isn’t bad. I can’t do anything crazy when it comes to being off-road, but you’re not really able to do anything extreme in it either way. It’s really meant for trails (mild trails with a path) and camping. And I am definitely content with it. It is an awesome all around car and I love mine! That K24 engine is a strong solid engine, and sits up there with the best of Honda engines. It’s got a timing chain so as long as you keep the oil change and topped off, that engine will last a long time. I baby the hell out of mine lol. I don’t do anything like in this video (driving wise) haha.

The bed setup is awesome, this vehicle needs to come back

I have a 2003 EX automatic and LOVE it. I bought it Nov 2009. I have replaced the engine and transmission, front axle, brakes, and water pump over the last few years. It has 230k miles on it now. It drives like new and I have no plans to part with it. It is perfect for me and my dogs. I have slept in it, taken it to the beach and all over the mountains of East TN. I hope Honda will make them again someday. #BringBackTheHondaElement

Wow! I'm surprised that you had to replace that much with only 230,000 miles.

Great video! I own 2, a 2003 and a 2011. Most versatile Honda ever built!

I have a 2006 Honda Element. It currently has about 152,000 miles on it. I have thoroughly enjoyed it, and have had no issues with it. Mine is all wheel drive with a 4 speed automatic.

@@rybudo It isn't a rock crawler or a Jeep by any means but with good traction tires on it the car goes anywhere we need it to go. It has saved our bacon on snowy roads many times.

I've worked for Honda as a technician for a long time. These are great vehicles . I recommend the EX, much nicer wheels and a little subwoofer.

I bought the cheapest model, because it had what I wanted. I went to ebay and bought the accessories I desired.The highest priced models don't have AWD. It's easy to add whatever accessories you want.

I added factory subwoofer option, factory overhead lighting, front grill guard, tail light guards, window vent sheilds. Roof rack with spare tire on top. It looks like a mini Range Rover. You wouldn't believe how it turns heads? Kiwi Green 2006 model. Black fenders and quarters. Looks brand new. LOVE IT! It really is BADASS!

Nice Element! I have an '07 2wd/5 speed EX w/ 120K on it. I love it! I bought it in AL, but now I live in NW PA; I wish I had gotten the AWD! I do have 4 studded snow tires for it & have no problems, though.

I never thought of it as ugly.

Got 385k out of my 2005 Element and then bought used 2009 with 63k on it, so expect another 11 yrs in this one if all goes well.

Motors are so cheap now put another in it. Have a Acura TSX with 6 Spd and it's quick. That 1 gear makes a difference. I blow the element Installing newer k24 and going 6 speed

I was rear ended and my car was totaled, right before Christmas, so I had to quickly by another car just to get around. I ended up with a 2008 Honda Element with 210k miles on it. It currently has 230k miles. I hate the suicide doors, and not a fan of the bright green color, but the vehicle is a workhorse and I will drive it until it dies.

The Element isnto imported to the US. It's buit in Marysville Ohio for the US market and exported. There's a final assembly plant for the Canadian market in Canada. Also, the rear headrests can stay on while reclining or folding them up the sides. It's tye fronts that need to come off when making a bed.

I have a first year Ellie. Best car I ever bought. Almost 300000 on her and still with the original clutch. Has some issues but worth every penny. Nice review other than tipping everyone off to how great this car is.

In May 2018, I stumbled on a 2011 near me in black with 121,875 and used hard, put away dirty. Still.... NO REGRETS. I sold my nearly new KIA Soul loaded and never looked back. I feel safer, sitting higher for easy entry and exit. I'm 63 and that makes a huge difference in ducking your head. The factory stereo system is second ONLY to the 2010 Jeep Wrangler 6CD changer with 275 watts, but I ain't complaining in the least. The Jeep killed my neck :( . In nearly 2 years, I still smile while driving. AND I SEE MANY MORE IN MY AREA toolin' around! Get on Cars Guru or whatever, the Elements are still out there for $14,000 at the most

I love my 2005.. one power steering pump, dripped on the alternator so one of those too and one battery...... 215k miles baby and still strong as hell... just use Valvoline 5w20 full synthetic oil every 4-5k miles and Valvoline ATF every 3 or 4 oil changes and she will never leave you...

You get a +1 for the Miami Vice intro...

It may not be bigger than a Camary but it holds a lot more than a van and a SUV. I use my for deliveries. The leg space is huge in the back.

I recently bought a 2010 Element EX as both a backup vehicle and a dog hauler/odd job car. It's flipping great. Drives way better than I expected and I was lucky enough to get one that was pretty well maintained. I immediately pulled the back seats out and it's got a crazy amount of room for three dogs. The seat mounts in the floor make great harness tie downs for the dogs and if anyone has an "Accident" in the back the cleanup is a snap. With only 105K miles it's still got a ton of life left in it. In fact if Honda reintroduced the Element I'd probably trade in my Jeep Renegade and get a new Element.

my wife bought one new in 2005. I bought a used one in 2022. both run great!

Love my 2006 Element. I bought it used in 2013...it now has 286,385 miles on it. Great in snow just wish gas mileage was better. I'd love to have a new one.

I had the ripped and worn out side bolster problem on my 03 EX and was sick of it, took it to a good upholstery shop and got the bolster repaired for $125. Well worth it and after 5 years is still like brand new... They matched it with a good quality vinyl. Really cannot see any diff from side to side. Better than seat covers. I really DO love my Element and would like to get another one. I just replaced the struts front and back, all the sensors.... Biggest mistake I ever made was changing out the audio. Nakamichi doesn't sound as good as stock. New R Front axle. 126K and just still going strong.

I can't wait to end up homeless and living in my element X'D

There's a few people out there having converted them into campers. Tie down points at the back help the situation. Personally it's too small for me but they were never available in my country either (being a right hand drive country we miss a lot).

I literally did this for like a year. I flipped up the seats and put a full size memory foam mattress in the back. It really wasn't all that bad, and I have a big mastiff too.

This vehicle is next level. Wish I had the insight to get this vehicle years ago.

Bought a 2010 model about 7 years ago. Love it.

I found one just like this but with Automatic transmission. It has 109,000 miles on it, however it's 7 hours away from where I live. The element has always had a special place in my heart and after watching this review I think it's worth the drive to get it. Especially since the Ralley Red color which I absolutely love is very rare to find where I live. Anyway amazing review friend, you really did a great job giving me some extra info and a nice in depth look of the car.

Did you get the Element? They are worth going long distances to get as they aren't made anymore and good ones can be hard to find.

Unfortunatly no, when I called to check the availability and to see if they can hold it, they told me it sold. I also found a 2006 ex in Rallye Red with 65xxx miles for 10k, it was at my local dealerships other location which was 3 hours away. I asked them to ship it over cause I was going to get it, but the other dealership sold it behind our back and that was within 2 days of them posting it. But I'm dead set on finding one in Rallye Red so the hunt continues. Thanks for letting me know if it would be worth the drive to get one.

Just an update. I finally found the one I've been looking for its a 05 EX AWD AT, 118,640 miles in Rallye Red. Got it today and drove it around for a while to get used to it and I love it! Thank You for this great review which sold me on getting an E, hope you get more subscribers, you deserve it.
