I have a small kitchen/living room area so I needed my kitchen island to double as a dining table. This required some planning when it came to wiring up the bench as the cable needs to be run inside the table legs, not the cabinets like you normally would. So I came up with this island bench, made with mortise and tenon joinery, and a European beech top. The cabinets are flat pack and custom fit the table.

A big thanks to Studio Dubbled for helping out with the beech top. If you're in north Queensland give them a look: studiodubbeld.com/

Great work, love the look! A nice mix of pre-fab cabinets with a custom table.
Nice work Robin, looking forward to seeing what comes next! Thanks, DC
Love the white with the wood-grain. That is a classic look. The whole think looks magnificent too.
What a great combination of pre-fab and handmade, premium beech and basic pine and chipboard that looks sensational. One of your most professional efforts and something you could proudly add to a portfolio of work for clients to look at and go - Yep, I want that. Awesome stuff Robin.
Makes a huge impact in that space. Well done!!
This is so clever! Easy to understand!

Great job! This project has inspired me to find the final design of what I need in my tiny little dining room. I may make a video of the process since I have some COVID time...

I have a similar system using magnets to lock them together. Magnets are hidden until pulled apart.

Hi robin, love the idea. I’m looking to attempt something similar. Would you share what brand of castors/wheels you used?
Lost some weight? Looking healthy! Also great idea for the movable cabinets. Clever solution to the space.
Cool !!!!
Absolutely fantastic idea. Just putting the paint on my removable island. I much prefer a dining table but settle on an island because I needed the extra storage. (Small house.) I might have to figure out how to put a table over my island or dish my idea and start all over. ☹️ Again, you did a fabulous job.

you could soft close drawers and that would handle the movement issue! great video and idea!

Nice job. 10 years from now you’ll love the fact you chosed polyuretane for floors. It will last for fantastic more wear and tear than furniture poly. And I guess you will prep for some bbq:s on that island aswell host some young ones with needle sharp forks on the table. May I suggest that you reinforce the cabinet flooring on top of the wheels? Easiest way is to just ad a 4 or 6 mm ply on top of the floor and glue it down with some PL 400 or anything equal. Or any other glue. The flooring is pretty strong when the cabinet stands still. But will take a great deal of beating when you move it around. Put all the things that’s supposed to be in the drawers on a scale. When you see the weight, you’ll understand.
Hi Robin, beautiful work. This has definitely inspired me. One question - where do your chairs/bar stools live when you are not using them? I have the same issue, small house, and whilst I can imagine this moveable island in my house I am not sure where my chairs would live. Thank you
it's look so easy when you have all the tools. I only have hand saw and drill. So its took to much time and energy to do the sawing.
IKEA should b selling things like this
Brilliant concept!

Just I was thinking something like that. I have a microapartment with only a bar in the kitchen. I was thinking to put under the bar a dinning table (maybe with wheels) and under this the island (no necesary with wheels).
Hi I was wondering what’s the measurements of your kitchen island please
💖
What was the final number that you spent total for the build?
I like the way you make your tenon joints very tidy! what is the brand of the flat pack cabinets and did they come with painted draw fronts? are they good quality? Thanks for sharing.
@RobinLewisMakes
Жыл бұрын
Thanks. They’re called Kaboodle cabinets, relatively good quality. The fronts I got were unpainted, but you can get them pre finished

What type of wood of counter top of the island table? It looks very nice

Thanks. It’s European beech
I really wanna start woodworking but I don't have the space. Hopefully, we can move to a place with a in-unit garage, so I can start working on projects like this.

Find a makerspace near where you live?
Hey Robin, this island cabinet turned out beautifully! You mentioned the poly that you used was some kind of poly for floors, it looks like Cabot brand, could tell us exactly what you used? I’m building an island for my son and want to make sure I get the right stuff. Thanks
@RobinLewisMakes
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian. Yeah, it’s Cabots CFP satin
👍
I just wanna know the measurements?
Is this the height of a table (75cm) or the height of a bench (90cm)? I’d love a bench for chopping that can be lowered to a dining table.
@RobinLewisMakes
4 ай бұрын
It’s bench height. Not the most comfortable height for eating but the cabinets dictated it
you didn’t need to use a food grade polyurethane for the top? is the top not going to be used as a cutting board?
@RobinLewisMakes
3 жыл бұрын
Nah, it’s just a surface. Got a dedicated board for food prep next to the sink
Using a soft close mechanism would solve this issue
