I don’t think he’s saying that decreasing calories won’t help you lose weight. I think he’s saying counting calories is a bandaid, for a problem that could be solved a better way. 100 calories of refined sugar is way worse than 100 calories of protein.

@@xd-bt3xs well it’s kind of like using grams as a metric to diet, decreasing the weight would probably decrease body weight. I’ve lost 83 pounds since March 2023. Weight lifting, walking, ample water (3-4 quarts/day) and 6-8 hours of good sleep. However, I have plateaued. I need to lose 30-40 more depending on BF%. I look great, and am happy, but I’m still aiming higher. My severe calorie restrictions aren’t working anymore, hurting my gym time, and messing with my overall well being. Help needed.
I am an insuline resistance patient, lost 18kgs, agree that blood glucose management is the key, but I still need to be more or less aware of the calorie intake.
My Dr and I had this very conversation and he also agreed with me that they put more sugar or sugar based ingredients in 98% of what we consume and sugar drives hunger pangs. Check Europe's ban on American food it will shock you!
I can confirm this 100%. The only way that I’ve ever lost and maintained my weight loss while doing jack shit has been keeping insulin down. I eat a ton of fats and protein and can now go long hours and days with no food. Mind you I’ve counted calories! Done it all! Gained all and more! Not this time!

Period.

The fructose story I had heard before was that it is converted directly into fat and so is only indirectly available as energy. When eaten in moderation the fructose we eat is mostly converted to glucose in the small intestine and enters the blood stream as such. When we overwhelm our intestines ability to convert the fructose to glucose then fructose will be processed in the liver to either glucose or fat depending on what energy needs the body is currently facing. Fructose in excess is a problem but that is true for glucose, fat, salt and even water so sensible discussion are better than Lustigs attention grabbing fear mongering statement to draw attention to himself

I don't know. I use calorie restriction on my dogs, myself, and my horses when we need to lose weight. I will cut maybe 1/8th of a cup/scoop (which isn't much at all) of food out of their diet consistently each day, they lose weight. I will cut my food intake back each day, and I lose weight. It works every time regardless of what I eat. So I wouldn't demonize calorie restriction as a tool for weight loss. I do agree that sugar should be avoided as much as possible. Obviously, if you choose whole foods over sugary processed junk, you can eat more volume. Also, it is more satiating than garbage food.
Fructose may be an issue, but calories are still important. Both ideas can be true. Bariatric surgery causes weight loss. Anorexia causes weight loss. Ozempic causes a loss of appetite, causing weight loss. Cutting calories causes weight loss. Avoiding carbs, while cutting calories, causes weight loss. There are no shortcuts around calories.

Well here is another but opposite extreme example: "vitamin D overdose" causes rapid weight loss despite of calories. According to my research we have two metabolic states I call them winter and summer mode. Unfortunatelly our average diet (including too much fructose) keep us in winter mode. If we followed how we ate during winter we would be more healtier and only gain fat under skin againts winter. Like Inuit do. But switching to summer mode is not an easy issue... It seems we have to manage copper status in fact. And it could explain why we lost ability to produce vitamin C...

I do restricted eating in a 4-6 hour window. Im never hungry and still consume around 1800 to 2000 kcals a day. I drink wine 2/3 times a week. I go for a meal if i want. Fundamentally, if you consume less calories than your maintenance, you will lose weight. This of course goes in conjunction with eating healthier and more nutritious foods that are high volume, low calories and keep you satiated. Avoid calorie dense low volume foods that do not fill you up but significantly add to your caloric intake without realising. Track your food and macros, choose the healthier options and ease into a sustainable caloric defecit and you will lose weight. I started doing this in July weighing 104kg. Im now 76kg by doing all of the above. If you're consuming healthy but calorie dense foods i.e. potatos, rice, fruites and nuts and are going over your maintenance you will not lose weight... simple.

No! Calories by themselves have nothing to do with losing or gaining weight. They are the same only if you are going to literally burn them. People only lose weight restricting calories because they eat less carbohydrates in the process. That means they lower their insulin spikes, like it has been explained in this video. They are fattening calories like carbohydrates and non fattening like fat, beef, lettuce. I spent decades eating way more calories than I spent and never gained weight. I also have known many people like that.

No. You need your minimum amount of protein. On top of that you still need a lot of calories for the energy. So there you ideally get carbs and fats.

@@Footie4ever Exactly, but thermodynamics doesn’t apply to the human body because the human body is not an enclosed system. Also, there are foods that increase your metabolism and foods that decrease it. Also, it is impossible for the human body to store fat without insulin being present. Proved by science.

@@lppbntso1 completely incorrect.. google Dr Sieglar’s cookie diet. People lose weight eating cookies as long as the calorie deficit is there. Also yes the cookies contain 9grams of sugar in each one lol

Lustig is right about ultraprocessed food and some other things however he is confused about weight loss. If you overeat on low insulun food you will put on weight. If you eat more than your personal body maintenance energy needs you will put on weight regardless .... Calorie is king, composition is queen.

It's hard to overeat on low insulin food because it's very filling, and even if you overeat most of them are low calorie, it's a win win situation.

Rubbish. Try overeating meat, broccoli, fish. Its self moderating.
1 gr of carbs = 4 calories 1 gr of proteins = 4 calories 1 gr of fat = 9 calories Simple math: 100 gr of sugar = 400 calories 100 gr of avocado = 900 calories. The question is: how on earth is 100 gr of sugar better than 100 gr of avocado? The answer is: calorie counting is BS!
counting calories works...every single damn time.
But ppl who restrict refined carbs for long periods ALSO yo-yo back once they start eating junk again…and trust me for most ppl who got to the point of being severely overweight, the urge to eat junk never goes away mo matter how good eating clean might make them feel. so its just as hard for them to sustain a no refined carbs life as it is to maintain a balanced low calorie diet. If they could easily control their 7:25 urges to eat highly palatable dopaminergic foods they wouldn’t be overweight to begin with!

I've been down that rabbit hole a few years ago, it was hell. Feeling guilty and anxious no matter what I ate. I just don't listen to any nutrition podcast now and my stress is way better and I think that's the most important thing, then I eat what feels right to me and don't overthink it, so I eat a bit of everything and just try to avoid heavily processed food, that's all

People who lose weight by eating less calories do so only because they are eating less carbohydrates in the process. They are fattening foods like doughnuts and non fattening foods like lettuce or beef. they all have calories but have a different effect on the body.
