In this Film Courage video interview Author Christopher Vogler discusses the distinct roles within writing processes and the diverse creative hats one must wear, contrasting journalistic, critical, and pure creative work.
Christopher Vogler made documentary films as an Air Force officer before studying film production at the University of Southern California, where he encountered the ideas of mythologist Joseph Campbell and observed how they influenced the story design of the first Star Wars movie. He worked as a story consultant in the development departments of 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures and Animation, and Paramount Pictures, and wrote an influential memo on Campbell’s Hero’s Journey concept that led to his involvement in Disney’s Aladdin, The Lion King and Hercules. After the publication of The Writer’s Journey, he had a hand in developing the stories of many productions, including Disney’s remake of 101 Dalmatians, Fox’s Fight Club, Courage Under Fire, Volcano, The Thin Red Line and many others. Vogler lives in Los Angeles, California.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

How wonderful this is; so affirming. Right now, as I tear down to rebuild, I need to hear these words. Thank you.

This perspective on the intrinsic difference of paths is important. I once had a discussion with one of my friends where we realised that we had had a similar thought about a character in a fantasy narrative who is discarded in the woods because of colourism (a very topical thing in South Africa). However, despite the fact that our idea was essentially the same, in his story, that character was the lead and the focus was his journey and being cared for by the 'witch' who had made him - it was hopeful and optimistic. In my story, the character was vengeful and wanted to affirm his place in society through violence - it was pessimistic and angry. Those elements are just who we are as people, meaning that our stories would ultimately always be different even when we deal with the same subject matter because we explore it through different perspectives and those perspectives come from who we are. This just illustrates the belief in the video above.

Always need this reminder. Trust the path you're on because it's yours and tell your stories because the world needs them.

I personally just write screenplays I’m interested in or that I’ve had in my head for awhile that I believe needs to be told. Which is how I’m able to write as quickly as I do.

Thanks for the advice Chris. I was going through a period of self doubt about my film ending. Someone once said , " I write because I have ideas that no one else knows". Your video has got my mind going again. Thank you. And thank you Film Courage for a great series of informative videos.

Something being unique is not enough for it to have value, it has at least 'some value', but 'some value' is not necessarily value enough. A crazy point of view may make it unique, but it does not make it smart or relevant. Same with crazy imagination, crazy ideas, crazy thoughts etc. Even worse if one considers something unique just by it being different. Different does not make you truly unique. Unique is beyond that, at least in its noble definition.

The writers of the world from the time of the neanderthals and before wrote/symbolized/created the most fantastic worlds. An infinite variety. Then it goes into the modern day Hollywood machine and it comes out all the same. The same story told, by the same 're-imaginers' with exactly the same 'diverse' (= monotone) cast over and over again. How to produce and endless stream of mindless and repetitive mud from beauty. Please keep on striking Hollywood ! Please, do the world a favor.
