    I think it's not especially 'Ketchup on Eggs' but rather that Ketchup is seen as fast/trash food kind of unsophisticated way to add taste to most foods. So generally it's seen as 'belonging' (us Germans love us some rules) with other fast food like Fries, Burgers, Currywurst etc. And adding it to 'non fast food' is kind of having trashy/cheap taste. My best guess 😉

    Btw something worth mentioning regarding the history of flags in Germany is that in the GDR people were required or expected to put up flags for certain events or holidays such as 1st of May. If it was noticed that somebody did not put up their flags for these events, they were at least reprimanded for it or may have had to fear further consequences. Most buildings had extra flag mounts outside the windows which were widely removed after the reunification.

    1. Most buildings of authoritys have flags (combined with the EU one), too. On special days, they will only fly half the way on important days of history (for example the day that Auschwitz was freed). Private housholds, are not used to it. I really like quilting and making Patchwork, and american fabric is sometimes so patriotic, with eagles and flags all over it etc.. That would never sell in Germany with the German flag. 😄😉 2. Ketchup on eggs is okay, when you miss a sauce. When you eat it with Brötchen, I use butter to make a great taste and combination. With a wrap, probably Ketchup. Left over noodles, fried in Butter with egg, of course Ketchup! 3. Last but not least: Congrats to the baby!!

    Regarding the German flag: Another aspect is that Germany historically speaking has never really been a true nation state in the same way as e.g. France or Finland, but rather a tapestry of kingdoms and duchies. So there are regional identities as well. Bavarians will fly the Bavarian flag everywhere (sky blue and white). In Frankfurt (formerly a "Free City of the Empire") the city crest (Frankfurt eagle) is quite present (doesn't hurt that it's also used by the local association football club as well).

    Interestingly the black/red/gold was a symbol for German unity etc. during the 19th century - until 1871, when the German Empire under Prussian rule started. Of course, they used their own colors and only ~100 years ago the flag as we know it was established. btw, German citizenship is even younger (1934).

    That the flag problem is based on the "WW2 stuff" is a frequently used explanation with a major problem: Back then, the German flag was striped black-white-red, changing to red with a white circle and a black swastika. The current German flag does not even resemble these WW2-times flags... It's the flag of German democracy, first shown at the "Hambacher Fest", Germanys first democratic gathering, in 1832 and strictly forbidden in the "third reich".

  • @Starssinger

    @Starssinger

    2 жыл бұрын

    And that would only explain Germany. But throughout Europe, you will only see national flags on government buildings, national holidays, embassies. Europeans regard their national flag as something precious. Not for everyday use.

    @@Starssinger - that's a huge difference. In France, for instance, you will see flags at the city hall, at schools, even every small village-mairie flies a flag. • @TomMRF

    @TomMRF

    2 жыл бұрын

    I still think the explanation works. It's not about the flag itself, it's about patriotism. Due to Nazi Germany patriotism is regarded a lot more negatively in Germany than in most other countries, and flying the national flag on you property is seen as a sign of patriotism.

  • @S_Black

    @S_Black

    @@Starssinger The American obsession with flags is completely over the top compared to practically everywhere else. Americans literally worship flags as holy objects. And you can never have too many of them are ones too small. It's at a point where the symbol itself is more important than what is supposedly represents. Other countries are patriotic too, but on most occasions they express is differently than worshiping a piece of cloth. Still, local flags - like from the respective state - aren't uncommon in Germany.

  • @relgeiz2

    @@TomMRF - I guess we're approaching the point. But it's not patriotism that's linked to German flags in the third reich, it's seen as a sign of nationalism. Moin, to "fly the flag" is really complicated in germany. Germany is a late nation formally founded after the german-french war in 1870/71. As an idea it existed already since the begin of the 19th century promoted by enthusiastic people rather in southern germany following the french revolution in 1789. Their colours had been black, red, gold. But the german state founded in 1871 was dominated by Preußen, so its colours became black, white and red. The Nazis continue to use those colours all over their symbolic stuff, so at their end in 1945 these colours had been entirely discredited. The western oriented Federal Republic of Germany goes back to black, red and gold as their colours as well as the soviet dominated counterpart German Democratic Republic does. In the 1980s someone could have been considerated as far right showing black-red-golden flags in his private rooms. I never encountered black-white-red flags. In these days flying a german flag came back to normal as I never experienced before with the soccer world chanpionship 2006 in germany as an important step. LG

    Fischbrötchen are best enjoyed fresh in cities like hamburg. But have you tried Mettbrötchen yet? Has Mikey? Wouldn't that be a video idea? Something like "My little brother's first raw pork sandwich" 😁

    See, if you do not overdo things, they have a bigger impact - like us flying our flags less often. When we do, it stands out and means something.

    You do not put ketchup on eggs haiya! It drown out all the egg flavour! Egg mild and moist, salt and pepper enough seasoning. No need for sauce. Also the mini sketches with your brother are hilarious!
