this is why I don't drift in real life... Now that I've got the full motion racing sim dialed in, it's about time to put my drifting to the test. Realistically, one of the biggest reasons I got the full motion sim in the first place was to practice drifting/driving without having to destroy my S13 in real life (although I'm sure that will happen anyway...). That being said, any drift advice you guys have for me, let me know! I hope you enjoy watching the journey of me learning how to drift lol

@@mikayla_collie Really ever since i moved my s13 in the garage I've gotten a lot done. It was sitting in the driveway for about 3 years since i did the SR swap and haven't touched it when i dropped it in. That might just be me but i definetly think working in the garage is better than in the driveway. Once that car is running, I'm parking my Rx7 in the garage to work on a swap. Then once that's done i will work on my Rx7 Drift car. I have those cars outside haven't touched them 3-5 years. I don't have a shop so garage it is.

Maybe it's just me but learning to drift irl with a low hp car really teaches you some valuable information and saves so much money. Taking time to watch and learn from others can be very beneficial. Understanding when and why things go wrong before they happen can come from both personal experience but also studying clips from a variety of drivers at different skill levels.

Overall just keep practicing. stick to 1 car, learn it inside out, and get good with it. Learn the tracks, and follow faster and smoother drivers. Don't rely on the e-brake too much. Only use it if you absolutely have to, instead try and learn left-foot brake and throttle control/throttle steer. Also, try out touge servers or solo touge runs on mountain roads. You can learn things to apply to drifting and racing when doing either activity. they go hand in hand together. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU ARE IN A SIM! push the cars over the limit, crash the cars, learn their limits, dont be afraid to tap other people in tandems, its part of the learning process. and finally, Have fun man. :)

And if you are in a lobby with randoms have the chat open (rest your cursor over the window to not make it disappear) and maybe inform the lobby that you are learning how to tandem and want to get some doors! If you don't chat or ignore the messages of others you might get the one or the other side eye if you crash too often, but most of us don't care.

one of the two most important things to keep in mind is firstly, keep those revs as high is possible, sometimes its better to keep it in a lower gear, or drop. Second is wheel control and understanding of how the car moves when you do different things to it but youre honestly doing a great job im impressed the rest is practice and time, itll become more natural

I do highly recommend trying to use a car set that doesnt have as much angle. Closer to what you would get out of a real life car. The gravy garage cars are by far some of the most fun cars to drive, but the angle you can use to save yourself is a little unrealistic. Usually a street car pack like the WDT cars are really good. The feeling is very numb and they do require quite a bit of tuning to get them to feel right imo. but less angle to really make you be focused on steering/throttle inputs would really help with the transition from SIM to IRL. Great Progress so far man! Keep going! It all helps

As I learned drifting, once I got the basics and was basically at your skill level, I selected a car that I wanted to drive more often (I think it was the Tsujigiri Altezza) and went and bought myself the 90sGDSP Happogahara Touge. There is also a free version out there if you want to test it (it's just the middle part) and another mod of this touge which is not that good. The paid version is 100% worth the 5 bucks. Drifting on this track teaches you two essential things: the main thing is "Look where you want to go!" This touge is very narrow and when you look at a wall or a barrier before a tight corner, you WILL hit it. The second thing it teaches is handling very awkward corner sequences and angles. This track has all you can wish for: fast corners with some room to play with, super tight narrow ones, a series of winding roads on a hillside, a series of fast left-to right switches and so on. The Tsujigiri Hero cars that I learned with had like 600-700 HP with a lot of angle, so I would recommend to use something weaker like WDTS for the start. But you technically know how it works so you don't really need to sit around in them for forever. Maybe make sure to use them once in a while like I do and have fun with whatever cars you like most!

Also a beginner at sim drifting myself, but did an IRL drift event before picking up the sim. A big thing that's helped with getting better is learning to NOT rely on the e-brake for entry, at least until you're more confident. Get super comfortable with clutch kick entries and throttle control, then incorporate some left foot braking and more clutch kicking mid-drift to control speed and angle, before finally adding in the handbrake. I don't have a hydro e-brake in real life, so relying on it in sim drifting (especially early on) WILL create bad habits. Just my $0.02

If you feel like you are about to spin out, like in your first try for example, try clutch kicking off throttle when you have caught the wheel... The theory is that a momentary clutch kick allows the back wheels to grip since you cut power, something you usually would need handbrake/brakes, which would either extend or shorten the drift outside what you intended, or, more counter-steer, which you probably don´t have xDD

  • @thesprawl2361

    @thesprawl2361

Good tip for people starting out, that. Learning to give the car that little clutch kick it needs to....sort of... _notice_ your countersteering. It's like telling the car 'buddy, I'm countersteering here, pay attention.' Another one is the importance of left foot braking; if you're having trouble catching transitions you can instinctively learn to slightly slow them down, so you don't spin out when they're done at high speed in a high gear. You can use left-foot braking for so, so many things, but slowing transitions is something that's really useful for virtual drifters because we lack the g-forces that would be there in real life if we were transitiong in a drift. So when you start out don't be afraid of using a tiny touch of left foot braking to slow a transition if you can tell it's going to be a wild, snappy one. And the more left foot braking you use the more you'll understand how insanely useful it is, how much extra control it gives you. If you mainoly just use clutch and throttle - and a lot of people only use those two pedals when drifting - you're basically drifting with one arm tied behind your back.

I started out with an SR20 in an S13 years ago when I first got into drifting would practice in empty parking lots and empty streets (I dont rec) then went to the closest track in my area Got the hang of it but I would say it is a little harder to learn the basics when you have more power than driver skill, I would spin out ALOT. Currently driving a stock KA s14, welded diff and angle kit with hydro and only drift on track. Alot of people come up to me and are surprised that its just a stock KA (140hp) with the way I drive it since I can link most the track consistently while holding angle and not spinning out. I guess the point of my comment is SEAT TIME, just like anything you gotta put in the time actually doing it first hand to understand it and get good at it. Sim racing does translate to real life driving at least with how realistic these games are. Enjoyed the vid btw one day ill build a sim setup myself since actual track days are expensive.

(First track) You really wanna e-brake that corner, but you don't need to. The e-brake does elongate your line but also slows you down a lot. In this case you were coming in at the right speed and you had the right line for that corner. Just let off the gas, no brakes, let it slide in position and then get back on it.

Second have the minimap at some corner where you can see the turns of the map as well as the players, especially nice when going from pit to track and not crash anyone.

consistent and smooth throttle helps in multiple ways but it mainly trickles and makes every other movement smooth and calm. except for the flicks and entries. the better you are with no handbrake the more control and understanding you have in the end. always be loose on the wheel and let the cars weight tell you what it wants to do.

The biggest thing that so few drift videos emphasise is the importance of left foot braking; a really simple example for a beginner(not saying that's you - IDK your channel very well) is if you're having trouble catching transitions you can instinctively learn to slightly slow them down w/ the brake, so you don't spin out from too much momentum. You can use left-foot braking for so, so many things, but slowing transitions is something that's really useful for virtual drifters because we lack the g-forces that would be there in real life if we were transitioning in a drift. So when you start out don't be afraid of using a tiny touch of left foot braking to slow a transition if you can tell it's going to be a wild, snappy one. And the more left foot braking you use the more you'll understand how insanely useful it is, how much extra control it gives you. If you mainly just use clutch and throttle - and a lot of people only use those two pedals when drifting - you're basically drifting with one arm tied behind your back...w/ left foot braking you can force oversteer in really tight areas, you can control angle really, really precisely, you can initiate reverse entries even more easily than with a handbrake, it's crazily useful. Think of it like this: there's a particular angle that you car will take that's perfect for maintaining your drift. Every milisecond you're trying to find that angle, and it's constantly changing. With steering and throttle input you have a way of finding that angle pretty well. With the wheel and the throttle it's like you have a huge invisible hand that comes down from the sky and can move the car's angle. But if you only use throttle and wheel input the giant invisible hand only has two fingers, so it can only prod and push and flip the car in pretty basic ways. You can still have good control with just those two fingers, but when you add left foot braking you're giving that giant invisible hand a thumb, and now it can rotate the car in really precise ways. It's that big a deal.

a tip for transitions is to have a little throttle or at least not decelerating when transitioning, it upsets the car and makes you more likely to spin. if you do need to slow down when transitioning keep in mind that the weight is on the front tires when you let off or break so scrubbing off speed with the handbreak is easier and more predictable.

the best thing anyone ever told me was to steer with my feet, and less with my hands. It sounds weird, but steer the car with the throttle. more throttle = more angle, and less = less obviously. This seems obvious, but when you actually apply it you'll notice how much the car actually self-steers. Also, try some low horsepower cars. somewhere between 1 and 2 hundred horsepower. My drift car IRL is a 100 hp miata, and i've felt it's made me a better driver then if I started on a 300 horsepower platform. It forces you to rely much more on momentum, speed and weight transfers opposed to only using the throttle to guide the car.

Throttle looks good but you seem to keen o using your ebrake remeber, this is not touge nor rallye you are trying to be smooth so minimalising braking is priority most of the times. Learn driftlines and how to get them ether with bashing your head against it by just trying or try to do it on "paper" first so something like the one in 1:56 doesnt happen where you feel like you need a handbrake but you really don't. I used assetto to learn sim drifting .I mainly play carx for drifting now tho ..if drift ce had better camera angles it would be a great drifter game ...throttle and brake control will help loads I learnt to just do small skids and controlling the car before full on drifting .I am on console tho 😂

damn, the seat position is like your 4.5ft with the wheel in your face, adjust the seat position in the settings and it will feel way nicer, and turn the neck angle down to almost flat, its not realistic, it took me years to get good enough to be consistent to follow and mimick peoples lines

Id start with.. Dont use gravygarage cars, theyre tooooo easy to drift, id start off with WDT's street pack, also, let the wheel do its work smooth, all you need to do is initiate the drift, throttle control and thats about it, just initiate, throttle control, less e-brake (rather clutch), and less wheel motion

Don't worry about assetto tooooo much. Get in the real cat. I can go to a use a track I know well like Grange and barely link 2 corners, but it's easy in a real car. Sign up for a beginner friendly event like Drift Central and get real seat time in asap.

in my experience i find it is way easier if you dont just slam the throttle trough the entire corner, try and only use like 50-70 percent throttle
