This is Why GREECE is My Favorite Country on Earth

After traveling to eighty-two countries over the past thirty-two years, Greece is my favorite. In this video I walk through the little town of Mandraki, capital of Nisyros island in the Aegean Sea and talk about why I love Greece so much. You can watch my other video tour of Nisyros island here (it starts partway into the video because the intro is filmed at the same castle): • ONE DAY IN GREECE | Th...

I must admit that this has been one of the most enjoyable and accurate video tours I've seen lately about Greece. I'm a Greek living abroad and your video brought to me that instant feeling of nostalgia. Can't wait to be back home, visiting one of the countless Greek islands, siting at a seaside fish taverna, enjoying a glass of nice cold ouzo with some grilled octopus and atherinas, gazing at the endless blue of the mediterranean sea... Simplicity at its best... What else could I ask for? Cheers! Ya Mas! 🙂

There's something about Greece that I have never experienced anywhere else. I can't put my finger on it. The atmosphere, the general vibe just resonates so well with me. I don't care where I go.. I just need a cold mythos, a plate of saganaki in a village square and a warm breeze and I'm happy as I can ever be. Don't ever change Greece.

Agree, most likely has something to do with what some say are energy vortexes. Places such as Sedona Arizona, Cusco Peru and others across the world experience this. The oracle of Delphi in central Greece is also said to be a strong vortex. Greece overall has to be a major if not the strongest energy vortex. Some of the ancient temples were placed in way that they formed a triangle even though they were miles apart. ( search triangulation of Greek Temples). It is the chosen land of the ancient Gods for a good reason.

But this extensive spending by the government was what made Greece so vulnerable to the 2011 bail out crisis , since 2011 life in my country is hell on earth for many people and things are constatly getting worse because the country cannot elect a proper government, corruption and unemployment is rapid and also suprisingly crime is also on the rise too . Personally I love my nation for her beautiful culture and nature witch is trully one of a kind , but if things continue to be the same I think I will have to leave my fatherland for the search of a new life abroad

In Greece a human is always a human. There's a deep humanity in Greek culture that makes human interactions at the same time feel honest and intense. I've been living in Greece for 18 years and have come to understand why my Greek mother in law would speak of tourists with such compassion. She says "they are far from home, they don't know the place, they are like little children and we have to protect them." In the beginning I found her approach to tourists a bit weird, but after living here so long I understand why she feels that way, but I can't put it into words. I find Greeks have a sense of dignity that isn't linked to status or appearance, but to knowing who they are and being raised within a culture that values human relationships, music, arts, food and spirituality as daily basic needs. You can argue with a Greek and really get upset with each other and then a bit later if they see you need help they'll just help you. Because before being that guy you had a fight with, you're a human being.

That only a real Greek within could put it so well. Well done! People shouldn't, rarely, confuse our hospitality ( philoxenia ) with some kind of weakness, though. Now, our forefathers defined long ago, what and who is a Greek. They set up two criteria: 1. Those who have both parents Greek 2. And receive the Greek education ( agogi ) Given that, you obviously don't have the first, but you do have the second, the most important one. You received, felt the Greek culture. We are happy to have you amidst our family! hehe! I'm having fun here. I hope you won't mark my words with a serious undertone.

When facing the beach there was a tall rock formation at the right end of the beach that people would climb. There was a restaurant on the beach that I believe was called George's where I had my first and last drink of Oozo. correct and timeless finding. Wealth is loved everywhere. who does not want it! But most people in Greece do not consider it superior to happiness. They are happy to have enough to enjoy life. No more. Let me remind you here of the incident with Tritantechmis. "Παπαί, Μαρδόνιε, κοίους επ' άνδρας ήγαγες μαχησομένους ημέας, οι ου περί χρημάτων τον αγώνα ποιούνται, αλλά περί αρετής!" "Alas, Mardonius, with which men did you bring us to fight. With those who do not fight for money, but for virtue" exclaimed the son of the Persian warlord Artavanos, Tritantechmis, when shortly after their victory in battle the Persian troops were informed the performance of the seventh Olympiad by the Greeks.

Nah it has more to do with lack of funds (it's a largely poor country) and historic reasons (for most of the Ottoman period Christians weren't allowed to build fancy houses or fancy churches or anything ostentatious, even when they could afford it, which is why most traditional folk architecture looks rather minimalist)

To move there permanently was also our plan, but we ended up in Portugal. The taxes in Greece are excessive. Happy to contribute with taxes but they have deemed income meaning they can estimate your taxes even if you only live from savings. Portugal is nice but I think we would like it better in Greece, maybe one day… just love the Greek people and food and always had a nice and personable experience with Greek people. We plan to go there end of August/September.

Hi Gabriel, I've been watching your videos over the past few years and I totally agree with all of what you say in this video. The first time I visited Greece was in spring 1991. I was 19 years old! Since then, Greece stayed in my heart and soul. Although I've been to many countries around the world I keep returning to Greece more and more, esp now I get older. Me and you are very much alike!! Love walking, cycling, exploring, the Greek food, language, culture, simplicity of life, peace, history, blue sky & sea, the fantastic weather, feeling free, and so on. I should teach you the proper pronunciation of the Greek words though 😉 I look forward to more of your new videos. Enjoy the travels, maybe we'll meet somewhere in Greece one day 😅🇬🇷💙

Greece was my fav country too when we traveled and lived in Europe as a child. I also loved the bright weather and buildings, the relaxed and friendly people and the history. I started studying modern Greek when I was 12 to understand a Cat Stevens song. :-) As for the water, well a friend was stung by a jelly fish and we had to watch for eels and spiky sea urchins. The other thing I loved - possibly most - was the rocky terrain. I loved climbing along the shore. Great memories! You’re making me want to go back!

Nice video thank you for making it Gabriel. I especially like that you have took notice of that little church in town and for trying to understand the "mystery" around them. In one book Saint Paisios tell us that those little churches are dedicated to Saints which have in some way either cured or helped people in some miraculous ways (who later out of gratitude have built them). Could be that locals still know stories behind them if they were passed on for generations. They are such a beautiful monuments of love. God bless all our Greek brothers and sisters!
