Cats can bite to hurt, but when they do without strength before licking you, it's the sign they were playing. + To get bitten seriously by a cat, and not just scratched, you'd really need to get your hands really close to the jaws of a cat that doesn't know you, without it having the option to scratch you before you're too close. Cats will usually discourage you by trying to scratch with their claws before you can reach them, and then only bite. I know no one who got surprised by a nice cat that suddenly tried to drink their blood

I guarantee that you will notice a difference between this "pet biting" and aggressive biting.

Same ❤️ My beautiful white longhaired boy, Philip, of 17 years, died August 2021. Even when playing, he would never pull out his nails. And we never trimmed them. Also he would always wait to be petted before eating. He wouldn't eat otherwise 😅

so so sorry for your and the previous commentator's loss. i lost my precious Sonya just recently too. she was the softest kitty, never ever had she gotten angry with me for no reason; really loved lying on my lap 24/7 and getting pets, and really loved me. interestingly enough though, i remember her doing the biting thing on a couple of occasions! it always took me by surprise as i couldn't really understand it, despite being moderately knowledgeable about cat behaviours. soo i just made sure not to stroke her too energetically. :D but i always knew she meant no harm!

@CrazyCatx Same. Almost. I found mine (the little that was left of him) in my parents yard, as they were away and I came over to feed him. The night before, I was with him, petting him, letting him drink from the tap that's outside, he always loved that, heard him purr. Just to realise, the day after when I came back, that yesterday, would be my last time with him. I was thankful for the 'chance to say goodbye' without knowing... I found his remains on the grass, after he was eaten alive by jackals, after I left the night before.. I felt immense guilt. But awhile after, I knew there was no way for me to expect something to horrifying to happen. Plus he was an outside Cat. He didn't like to stay indoors for long

Cats are each also individually sensitive. Some perceive too much petting as overstimulating and gently bite the hand to say "slow down" , or "I've had enough, thanks."This especially happens when rubbing the belly.

My little lady is 10 now and still has same playful energy and behaviours as when she was a year or less. Gonna keep her healthy and happy forever!

I fostered and did a mild form of Doggie and Kitty hospice with My mom when she was alive, I always received the best love/loyalty from the neglected ones. Takes a lot longer to win them over but when you do you can usually do whatever the hell you want. We had a mean ass old dog no one could pet and I was 12 loving,rubbing and teasing her and id squash my face in her belly and my mom would get so scared. Glad I got to give that mean bitch 2 years of love. Learn body language and be patient and you'll win them over.

Are you the original owner? Could be past learned behavior. I've rescued cats for 25 years and never had a cat chew on me unless they were getting excited or scared and only once did a cat only ever accidentally break skin because she was scared from past experiences. Whereas I've had a dog rip my hand apart, literally, for trying to leave a room.

It is. They get over stimulated and typically signal that they want the petting to stop like tail flicking or raising their fur. Also in the video there was someone touching their cats belly, even when tolerant most do not enjoy it and it can cause a bite from over stimulation. My job was working with animals and I have NEVER been bitten during petting because I observe their body language and stop when they are over stimulated (something I understand because I ALSO get over stimulated.

Sometimes it's a "love bite."

In my experience, I get bitten a lot but no actual strength goes into those bites so I don't mind them ☺️. I do mind when I'm scratched though because it penetrates the skin and you understand those claws are not the cleanest things....it itches.

Jaded_one, It is. Feral cats bite to defend themselves. Domesticated cats only "fun bite" (gentle) the people they consider to be litter mates, family or friends of the family...but if you play rough w them when they are kittens, they'll continue to play rough when they're adults. Their teeth and claws are longer, their bite is stronger and hurts more...but...that's the way they were taught to be... and it's hard to change what you taught them when they are young. When mine were kittens and they bit or clawed too hard, I'd say, "NO!" firmly but not loudly or angrily and I'd stop playing with them until they calmed down. It has to be consistent though. There's no need to hit a cat into obedience. That'll just break their spirit and no animal is fun when that happens. It's similar to the way you'd raise a child to be a calm, non-threatening adult.

My familys cat does this , he’s 13 years old. But he also bites to signal that he wants something. He often comes creeping up in my mum’s lap after he’s bitten her leg, or he bites me and comes and wants to be petted. Then he is like a small boy seeking comfort. His name is Putte, a common Norwegian name for male cats. His nickname is Barbwire.❤We all love him, of course!

I rescued a 2 wk old ferrel kitten and nursed him back to health. He is the only cat I have ever owned that bites and scratches nearly nonstop. I had to buy a pair of leather gloves that come up to my elbows that are bite proof to protect myself! I hope he grows out of it!

My cat is an old man and he still does this. When he does it I do a loud screech and he just looks at me shocked like "wtf is her problem?"

They do get overstimulated quite easily depending on the cat.

I would call it overstimulation over "instincts" in most situations. It's still called petting aggression, but it's not about catching; moreso a release of the energy we over-rode them with with over-petting. Even just a couple-few pets can do so. And definitely, Yes~ I've noticed when toddlers, or those who are not as associated with cats, pet harder the cats either like it (cutely) or get the "zoomies" which is bite and/or scatter and run a mile a minute. My own cat will sometimes do the butt wiggles when over exhilarated, but rarely exhibits hunting behavior otherwise(excluding playtime). Jackson Galaxy explains much much better than I, though; as a lot about cats I've learned from him and experience and books.

Yep, I have two cats and one can be petted pretty long and like a dog and she does get energized and starts to bite but very gentle and will walk away... then walk right back for more! The other one you have to petty nicely and only in certain areas or he will bite hard or run away.

Yes. Interestingly, my cat likes getting petted a few times a day, but if I pet her from the middle of her back to her tail, she gets very easily overstimulated. I got her when she was 2 years old, so I'm not sure if something else as well is in play when it comes to me touching her back. Though now, roughly 2 years later, she seems to have less of a reaction when I accidentally pet her there.

It’s also called “play biting”. They don’t actually bite into your hand, they just give it a nibble. They know how sharp their fangs are, and try not to bite too hard.
