I read a book on quitting alcohol. It said to meditate on how alcohol makes you feel the next day. When you mentally connect alcohol with that kinda sick feeling., it becomes easier to quit. After I quit alcohol, I noticed becoming quicker and smarter. I literally move faster.

So happy for you!
Almost 4 years without a drink and while I thankfully wasn't at rock bottom, it simply wasn't serving me (physically, mentally, and financially). It was robbing me of time, money, health, energy, and happiness. Greatest decision I ever made - I eventually lost stubborn belly fat simply from quitting (and changing nothing else), and gained mental clarity, self-discipline, and anxiety management skills I never had before.

At the beginning of 2023. I realized i was mindlessly drinking at the end of my day as a habit. So I challenged myself to 26 drinks in 2023. One every other week. And it made me appreciate my decision to have a nice cocktail. No more random beers at the EOD. By the end of the year I just stopped drinking. It allowed me to appreciate my drinks more. And then completely see the uselessness of it.
I was drinking a lot for the last 10 years after losing my wife to cancer. Last year I really focused on quitting alcohol. I am feeling so much better these days and I feel like I sleep better, think better and have my emotions in check.

Alcohol is like a whirlpool it will keep sucking you in and by the time you realize how deep in you are…you will keep relapsing everytime you want to genuinely quit. It was a real battle for me and all i wish is i could go back in time to avoid all the damage i did to my body
I’m glad this conversation is starting to become more prevalent. I’ve drank my entire adult life and have always had a “high tolerance” so in many instances, I’ve drank a great deal. I’ve cut 99% of alcohol, basically only doing so on special occasions and I’ve been feeling so much better

Same here. I've cut way back, having been a light to moderate and sometimes heavy drinker since age 17. What's interesting is I've had maybe three memorable hangovers in 45 years. People could never understand how I could drink so much and look and feel great the next day. I've been believing for a while now that it has something to do with GABA reset. It's torturous to me to have all that brain activity, like the racing thoughts, and also the tense muscles. Deep massage and alcohol were the only things that helped with any of that, since I just could not relax without intervention (no interest in other drugs), and alcohol is readily accessible and fairly cheap. I'm working on the spiritual side of energy clearing and trying to channel those racing thoughts more positively. A clean diet is a good basis for spiritual work, along with any mindful supplement use. You have to be careful with those too. And movement does wonders!!

I spoke with a cancer specialist who said it's a HUGE dirty secrret thag alcohol causes pancreatic cancer. Like 85% of pancreatic cancer patients are functional alcoholics. He said that the alcohol industry works very hard to suppress this information and they as an industry are not allowed to discuss how many cancers are caused by alcohol. It actually makes since because cancer loves sugar. Alcohol is the easiest and fastest form of sugar to process because the acid in it breaks down the cell barriers and it soaks right in.

85%? I had 3 friends pass away from pancreatic cancer within a year. None of them were even moderate drinkers. I doubt that they drank at all. However they probably ate a little too much sugar at times.

The 50-60 day mark where there is a noticeable change in mental sharpness, felt energy throughout the day, clarity in decision-making, etc is real. Happened for me and it was similar to an experience I had stopping alcohol years ago. Focus on that 60 day mark and keep in mind that change is on the way even if you're feeling a bit off at the moment. Once you get past that point, avoiding alcohol becomes second nature as you realize you can't possibly feel any better than you do sober and the drinkers you spend time with, you may end up feeling sorry for them. Alcohol-free is a true super power and a major competitive advantage.

The reason they used to call people ‘pickled’ is heavy drinkers’ cerebro-spinal fluid eventually turns ammonia-based. When drinkers cracked their skulls open during the inevitable horse accidents which occur from drinking and riding, bystanders noticed the same smell coming from their cracked-open heads as they smelled when grandma was making pickles. Didn’t take long to put two and two together.

I think we all will realize alcohol is bad as we get older. I’m in my early 20s and alcohol doesn’t feel like it affects my mood or energy levels the next day. But I have older friends that talk about how they can’t drink like how they use to anymore.
@PriusTurbo
6 ай бұрын
I think the older people that say that about alcohol have slowly conditioned their brains and bodies to use alcohol in a different way. Casual drinks never had that impact on me even up to 40 but it's the heavier drinking and tendency to drink multiple days in a row and people get older that really take a toll. Alcohol has provided some experiences I never would have had otherwise but I don't need any more of them at this point. It all just becomes repetitive and it's possible to do all of the same nightlife activities without alcohol, it just takes some adjusting. Going out with drunk people while sober makes you feel like Neo in the matrix.

We need a cultural shift. Alcohol consumption is seen as classy and badass. All the movies have the protagonists downing hard liquor as part of their appeal. Watching John Wick, you see him in some badass fights and then downs some bourbon like a boss. In reality alcohol limits our peak physical and mental performance. Season three of Reacher should show him downing wheatgrass juice shots instead.

Be your own best friend for awhile.
I started taking laird performance mushrooms about a month ago… I’ve been a functioning alcoholic for multiple years drinking liquor DAILY. 9 days ago I decided not to have a drink…. I haven’t drank a drop since and don’t plan to. I genuinely think those mushrooms helped me start thinking clearly and aware I’m killing my body. I have no goal of how long to give up alcohol. My only goal is LONGEVITY. Alcohol is death.
I would suggest the book "Quit Drinking Without Willpower" by Allen Carr. This book has helped me more than any other books that I have read - and I have read a few - on this subject. After reading this book, I simply did not want to drink anymore.
The only problem I ever had with alcohol was the pointless calories. Got to a point where it just wasn't worth it anymore. Then all this new evidence just pushed me out the door entirely.
The negative side effects can happen before a person realizes it….i was almost there…I quit and got my life on track just right before it killed me…thankfully I was still young enough to recover and seem to be 100% healthy…it was so fun until it became a problem.
I haven't had a drink for 15+ years, one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. So glad i woke up
Well now! I knew this was happening to me! I quit 6 years ago and at that time I tried explaining to my counselor and psychiatrist that alcohol gave me energy! I knew it wasn’t normal and over the years it took more and more alcohol to keep my motor running. So I’m not crazy after all.
Damn, the hangovers. People must be really bad to tolerate it. It seems worse than almost anything else. Why do it?!?!

I've drank off and on my entire life. From 4-6 beers after work every evening in my 20's, to weekend only. Now mid-60's, I only drink between 2 and 4 drinks, Saturday night only, between the hours of 9 pm and 1 am-if that late. Whisky and ginger ale.
I quit 8 months ago and only wish it were 8 years instead! One of my big motivators was when I went to buy some beer to make myself feel better after drinking too much beer!! I don’t miss it one bit!!
Why must one quit if they have no negative effects from a drink now & then?

Dumb question 🙄
Great stuff. At my highest point of alcohol intake I was working part time and had 100K in my bank account and would leave work everyday at noon and head to a bar. I kid you not my weekends were non alcoholic as I needed to recover somehow. I did this for a full year and can tell you that at some point when I took a drink my brain chemistry would insta change. I would be at the bar depressed and the first tequila and beer shot and would start to feel even worse and then instantly felt amazing. Best way to describe the feeling was Christmas eve with family and that happiness.

I told my wife several years ago that when I first drank a couple beers at about age 17 (late bloomer LOL) I said to myself, " this is probably what normal people feel like all the time". Recently, before he passed away I heard Mathew Perry say the same thing. I'm 67 now and I still drink alcohol. I've always been health conscious at the same time and for decades I limit myself to 1 beer a day. Because of this feeling of "normalcy" I get from alcohol it's only by the grace of God I was able to limit my intake. This gentleman makes so much sense.

When my wife drinks 2-3 beers it’s like her memory shuts off. She may be sober-ish but she won’t remember a conversation from 15 min prior. It pisses me off. I was a heavy drinker for roughly 15 years (20’s-30’s.) There was rarely a day that passed that I didn’t get drunk. Eventually, I started having excruciating pain and swelling in my knees. The painful was so bad that I couldn’t walk! Come to find out, the pain was gout. Since I stopped drinking every day, the gout flare-up’s are few and far between. That being said, I still occasionally have a drink, but very rarely. Just knowing I could have a flare-up keeps me in check. How I didn’t experience any withdrawals when I quit drinking is beyond me. Y’all take care.🙂

I couldn't really understand what made him choose such a cytotoxic downer, as his favourite substance compared to other well known drugs of abuse. Although, he had the typical 'damaged' look of people being serious alcoholics. We had a great Norwegian intellectual, author and social critic (Jens Bjørneboe) living here in Europe, and also in the US, for some time, but even though he was a very knowledgeable and creative artist, he was an alcoholic, most of his life, but I think he must've had some serious Depressive and Post traumatic issues, as well, given the the deeply painful autobiographical content in some of his books and plays. He also seems to have had alcohol as his Muse and inspiration, although he really paid for it... It's just incredible what people do to hold their demons in control! It's sad, but these last decades, it's like the whole western world is haunted by horrible entities, not just intoxicatants! (Sorry, if I'm on side of the topic of your podcast). I think it seems like a good idea to use diluted vinegar for metabolic balancing! At least you can get the positives of ethanol metabolism without suffering from the poisonous effects of acetaldehyde!? What do you think of acetate for metabolic disorders?
Gosh, I couldn’t imagine feeling sharper/better on alcohol. Alcohol sedates me and impairs my judgement/abilities
So how do you get your mitochondria and metabolism back on track?
31 days dry
One of my Sergeants in the Army Reserve was a functional alcoholic. He's show up to drill drunk. We got deployed overseas and had to stay in a hotel overnight and he took a big chunk out of the hotel mini bar. When we had a problem with a vehicle and needed expertise he was our go to mechanic. He probably made it to retirement.
omg I love my mitochondria so so so much and I'm so grateful I don't use alcohol ❤
Even moderate consumption of alcohol is thousands of extra calories per week not to mention the hormonal and sleep changes. If anyone is trying to lose weight cutting out the alcohol really is next to mandatory
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 01:19 🧠 *Alcohol, when metabolized, produces acetate which can fuel brain cells, potentially leading to feelings of alertness and well-being, especially in individuals with insulin resistance.* 03:16 🧪 *Alcohol is converted into acetaldehyde, a toxic compound harmful to mitochondria and cells, contributing to cellular damage and potential organ failure.* 05:33 📉 *Chronic alcohol consumption can exacerbate metabolic dysfunction, creating a cycle where alcohol is used as a coping mechanism despite causing more harm over time.* 06:16 🍺 *Liver and brain are the organs most affected by alcohol consumption, leading to various levels of cellular and metabolic deterioration.* 07:12 🏃♂️ *Alcohol consumption, particularly among athletes, can significantly impact metabolic function and performance, highlighting the importance of considering alcohol's effects on overall health and athletic achievement.* Made with HARPA AI
Alcohol is horror for some just kinda bad for others... never goooood for any
I was drinking 3 beers a night until a short time ago. Even if you are not classically hung over there are still mild side effects. I feel really great 👍 (no beer)
It's really not worth it to drink
Definitely seems that a lot of people are moving away from imbibing this poison which is a good thing as there’s a reason why alcohol is everywhere
153 days without alcohol 🎉 Did it just for health reasons and felt so much better I don’t want to go back
Great info. I've binged drunk for around last 10 years, except for @3 years sober period. Might go month or more between, 4-6 day drunk, don't eat. Otherwise, meticulous ketovore, usually less than 10g net, often 0, train hard rigorous 3+hrs/6days/wk except during drunk and @3-4 day recovery. Maybe this will induce me to stop. Perfectly healthy, haven't been to a doctor for anything except injuries, physicals 45+ years. Haven't been sick since I quit before smoking 31+ years ago...
Good discussion but it needs to continue to the use of ketones to replace the alcohol for brain fuel.
*_pleased to meet you💞🎉😍_*
Life has many pleasures, and having a nice glass of wine with a steak is one of them. It's possible to enjoy alcohol responsibly. The French regularly drink red wine, and have done so for 1000+ years and they are among the healthiest people on EARTH.
Interesting info. How would this study impact someone over 50 start getting an intolerance to drinking any alcohol? This is a male that is a road cyclist and considered very fit and healthy. He gets headaches right away after a couple of beer or wine, which also disrupts his sleep.
One month today 🎉
“Don’t drink! …but please eat my non FDA approved gummies!” 🤷🏼♂️😂
SOOO interesting. Im one of those people who gets energised and clear from alcohol . I dont drink often any more as I like it so much but know how bad it is. I feel great after a drink, but awful the next day. Is there a healthy way to get that same brain impact?

HIIT training and cold exposure work great. Timing caffeine is pretty good too. If you are going to be up late anyway and have poor sleep quality, drinking an espresso or two before you go out with people at night will get you fired up.

~Siberian Ginseng and Korean Ginseng both together. ~CBD Oil. ~Wheatgrass or Barkeygrass juice or juice powder. ~Yes, a high quality countertop Cuppaccino and Expresso coffee maker machine. I like mine with milk or cream, but no sugar.
Was anyone else distracted by the fact they seemed not to be in the same room but yet are still looking to the side of the camera as if they were facing each other? And then suddenly you see they are actually in the same room.
