I sold all my analog gear to fund my conversion to Atmos. As soon as I went full digital my mixes instantly sounded better than they ever have. Good analog gear is needed for tracking but not for mixing. An expensive lesson to learn, the grass is not always greener.

Interesting. Yeh, I think I need to try an all digital mix to compare. However, now I’ve learned all of Jaycen’s tricks, this next mix will be at a huge advantage 🤣

​​​@@EdThornenestly, there's something 3 dimensional about running through quality analog gear even if you're not really manipulating any audio. It's subtle but feels really different, especially if you avoided letting lots of little "barely audible" aliasing build up in the mix. Try mixes with God particle.... With and without a little sweetening analogue sends (and definitely don't leave the god particle limiter on for this! Crispy aliasing) And then tell me you don't feel the difference? Do you need it in there. Definitely not. Does it have an extra openness? Does the sheen feel like in the box? Is there an extra slight 3d quality? It's the a little more natural sounding separation? A little analog here in the mix bus is awesome! It's not going to be quite as good totally in the box, IMO. I can see why someone working at the level, wouldn't bother. Especially if he's mixing up to five tracks a day! Besides his style has more of a modern digital feel. It's great. But I don't think it cares about that last bit of openness and analog sound... I don't think he cares about a little bit of aliasing.

2 great points, assistants prepping your work, and, the QUALITY of the product, makes all the difference.

Cool video! I was there too. You don't need to sell your analogue equipment because ultimately mixing is personal. Jaycen has a particular approach that works but other ways work too. I think the main focus was on the artform, so adopt what works and modify to suit your perspective

You should do a more in depth dive on Jaycens techniques and what he taught on the seminar as it would bring you a lot of interested viewers

Best 160 I spent in years! I’m ripping my hybrid setup apart to follow more of his workflow. Plan to have a 100% mirror of his template ITB and OTB. And if they let me on it deffo plan to attend a MWTM bootcamp in France next year. Yes there was a bit too much of an infomercial on TGP, but as he created it to meet his mix needs and features heavily in his template then it made sense in a way. It gave a few other plugs a lot of live too. The SHMC being one. What a cool looking box! Gonna get one just for the look! Amazing. His tips on gain staging the drums and bass were priceless. I think the idea of hiring assistants to do the shit work like editing adding automation and slapping some random vox and drop candy on vix chops will save a lot of time too. But that’s venturing into realms of production imho a bit beyond the basics of a mix engineer. But then again the lines are continually blurring between a producer/mixer/me and whatever other label applies. 5 a day would be a piece of piss with that template and a team given his inout material and experience. A lot of it is cookie cutter rinse and repeat. Not dissing it. He’s spent years perfecting his trade. I do the same in my business. That’s what they call working smart.

awesome video!!! Dave and Jaycen have so much knowledge they are amazing, especially if you get to talk with them in person. So you mentioned at the end if it was bad for you to have all that gear. I will say this. When your recording live drummers and mellotrons and other instruments they run through hardware, and then lets say Jaycen gets it, and works all in the box, you get an amazing track. (but we don't know what the Producer or Recording Engineer Ran It Through, you know what I mean) It's ok to run sampled drums (kicks, snare,etc...) and software into hardware. It does change the sonics. I actually run my Native Instruments and other synths on my laptop at low latency out of the apollo and into my Mac Studio through analogue. I believe these parts are the how you get the Recording aspect better, because like you said, before it gets to Jaycen they made sure they get it to it's best, but what if you're the person doing it all? yeah, crazy lol Thank you for the content 🙌🏾

Yeh, I agree. Analog processing on the way in for sure is the best way to get polished results. I don’t think my analog gear is completely wasted but I’ll go into it in more depth in the video next week. 🔥🙏

Nice video and yea Jaycen career path was definitely different from the usual he was a record executive who became a mixing engineer and Record producer was the producer that gave him a shot at mixing big records which Tricky was initially one of Dave’s clients since Dave is originally from Atl and Jaycen definitely has a wealth of knowledge and I’ve been in the box for years I have 3 analog pieces of gear which I don’t even use I have the God particle it’s dope but I definitely use other tools more so than it but like anything it’s definitely preference based but I’m glad you and Paul enjoyed yourself I wish I could have attended but I should be in London at Abbey Road doing a session there hopefully this September

Lessons to learn.... yes good audio is great. However, I have watched some great producers/mix engineers. Heres what I learnt! 1. Don't need lots of outboard, a bit is nice but not necessary. 2. Don't fear big moves and ignore those who scoff at many plugins being used - use whatever it takes. 3. Ozone is actually really good. Get the song out there, make good songs nobody gives a shit about the rest of it really.

None of what we do is relevant if the song doesn’t mean something to the listener. We’re merely packaging the art (which, yes, is a beautiful art in itself).

It is intended to be a mix bus processor because it works in parallel to your main signal. So it would be on guitars by default. I need to spend more time with it for sure.

He uses a analog pultec then prints to protools, Thats a fact! he's online using multiple outboard gear.

He didn’t mention this but it wouldn’t surprise me. However, the use of the Waves NLS plugins may negate his need for this (he stacks these on the busses).

Not anymore. He's 100% in the box. But uses UAD plugins which use separate DSP like UAD Satellite which he had. His studio uses the Avid converters clocked with Antelope 10M though

@@barneyrubble8255 He didn't say, but you might find that answer in one of his IG posts or KZread interviews. However, I would guess if he's able to get the same (or better) results ITB, he can demonstrate to the rest of us that it's not necessary to mix with analog equipment. A few other major mixing engineers do the same. That might encourage future mixing engineers and ultimately raise the standard for the craft of mixing. Recording however, is totally different

Yes. 100% on the plugin is the parallel processing dialled in at 50%. 200% is full effect.
