Black Water was actually a B-side on a 45, when the band went on tour they found out their manager was desperately trying to get a hold of them, when they asked why he told them they had a big hit on their hands and it was Black Water. The Doobie Brothers didn't make Black Water for massive radio play, they made it because they loved the song. When you make music you feel in your heart and soul and others love it as well that must be a tremendously satisfying feeling.

Patrick Simmons, who is the group's guitarist, wrote this song and sang lead. It has the Louisiana swamp rock feel of earlier Doobie Brothers songs like "Toulouse Street" and "Black Eyed Cajun Woman." "Black Water" wasn't seen as having hit potential, so it was relegated to the B-side of "Another Park, Another Sunday" in March 1974. "Black Water" wasn't issued as an A-side until November, and it didn't reach #1 until March 15, 1975

Per Wikipedia: Founding member. Patrick Simmons, wrote this song. Simmons cites the song's opening section as "my childhood imaginings of the South from reading Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer" while the lyrics subsequent to the first chorus draw on his actual experience of New Orleans: "going down to the French Quarter as often as possible and going into the clubs and listening to Dixieland"

There's two distinct eras of the Doobies. This song is from the first era of almost a Southern rock style and the later era was a more soul/r&b style lead by Michael McDonald. "China Grove" and "What A Fool Believes" are good examples of each era.

Wasn't that great! I really love the Doobie Brothers, this is one of my top 3 favorites. I think it is so beautiful they way they incorporate the chimes in the beginning of the song. It sounds just water. I can just picture the moonlight on the water. Sigh, how I would like to be there listening to some Dixie Land Jazz. This song just transports me to another world. I liked your TikTok showing your grill and Jerk Chicken! Yummy! I sure hope you guys have found a comfortable place to stay and things are going well for you in Texas. Hang in there! Sending best wishes your way. :)

They have it all like many bands of that era: true singers, true instruments, harmony, rythm, melody,, etc. Live shows are as good as recording sessions, even better. Hip-hopers and rappers: just a bunch of losers bullshitting music where all is fake.
